Akkala Ancient Tech Lab Guide — Tears of the Kingdom

The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab sits on the northeastern edge of Hyrule at the Akkala Highlands, perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the Akkala Sea. Originally a Sheikah research facility from the era before the Calamity, the lab has been repurposed in Tears of the Kingdom as a hub for Robbie's research into ancient technology and Zonai artifacts. It is one of the most remote locations in the game — and one of the most rewarding for players who make the journey.

Getting There

Overland Route (Recommended for First Visit)

From Tarrey Town (northeast Akkala region):

  1. Head northeast through the Akkala Wilds following the Akkala Sea coastline
  2. Pass through the East Akkala Plains — watch for wandering Hinox and Moblin camps
  3. Climb the eastern cliff face (or use Ascend on a suitable rock formation)
  4. The lab appears as a distinctive circular structure with a large flame pillar at its center

From Akkala Skyview Tower: Launch and paraglide northeast — the lab is visible from the air at approximately (-3400, 3150) surface coordinates.

Sky Route (Fastest)

From a Sky Island at moderate altitude above the Akkala region, paraglide directly to the lab's landing zone near the cliff entrance. Reduces overland travel time by 80%.

What's Inside the Lab

Robbie's Workshop

Robbie — the eccentric Sheikah researcher who previously appeared in Breath of the Wild — maintains his workshop in the lab's main chamber. In TotK, Robbie is working on cataloguing Zonai devices recovered from sky ruins and cross-referencing them with pre-Calamity Sheikah archives.

Quest trigger: Speaking to Robbie initiates the "A Mystery in the Depths" side adventure, which involves recovering a specific Zonai artifact from the corresponding Depths coordinates below the lab.

The Observation Dome

The upper floor contains an observation platform with a telescope. The view from the dome is one of the best in the northeast map — Akkala Sea, Eldin's volcanic cone, and the distant Lanayru mountain range are all visible simultaneously. Worth visiting at dawn for a spectacular lighting moment.

Storage Vault

The underground level (accessed via ladder near the back wall) contains:

  • A treasure chest with a modified Royal Guard's Bow
  • A Bubbulfrog clinging to the east wall of the vault — one of Akkala's highest-priority gem targets
  • 3x Ancient Arrows in a breakable pot (random loot, respawns with Blood Moon)

Surrounding Secrets and Side Content

Akkala Citadel Ruins (Southeast of Lab)

The crumbling Akkala Citadel northeast of the lab contains:

  • Multiple treasure chests with modified weapons
  • A Flux Construct I encounter at the citadel's central courtyard
  • The "Rebuilding the Citadel" side quest triggered by speaking to a Hylian researcher near the eastern entrance

East Akkala Stable (West)

The nearest stable to the lab is the East Akkala Stable — a one-hour walk west or five-minute ride east of the lab. Offers horse storage, cooking pots, and the Dye Shop (Akkala variant), where you can change the color of your armor using regional plants.

Skull Lake (North)

The unusual skull-shaped lake north of the lab is a Korok Forest reference location. Contains:

  • 12 Korok Seed puzzles (rock patterns, balloon shoots, block puzzles) along the shoreline
  • An underwater chest accessible via Zora Armor dive
  • Naydra Dragon sighting zone — Naydra's aerial circuit passes directly over Skull Lake in the early morning, making it one of the best Dragon farming spots in the Akkala region

Dragonhead Island (Northeast Coast)

Accessible only by swimming or paragliding across the Akkala Sea east of the lab:

  • Contains a hidden shrine (use Sensor+ to detect)
  • Two treasure chests buried under breakable ore deposits
  • Rare ore spawn — Luminite, Star Fragment chance on Blood Moon nights

Bubbulfrog Details

The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab vault Bubbulfrog is one of the easiest to reach once inside the lab but one of the easiest to miss because the vault entrance is unmarked. Look for a wooden ladder near the east wall of the main chamber — it leads down to the storage area. The frog is clinging to the wall at the north end of the vault room, emitting a faint green glow. Approach slowly and shoot it with an arrow before it can hop away.

Armor Upgrading Near Akkala

The nearest Great Fairy to the Akkala Lab is Tera (near Woodland Stable, northwest of Eldin). It is a substantial journey from the lab — recommend batching your lab visit with a full Akkala region circuit rather than making it a standalone upgrade trip.

Efficient routing:

  1. Akkala Tech Lab (main quest + Bubbulfrog + vault chest)
  2. Akkala Citadel (weapon farming + side quest)
  3. East Akkala Stable (resupply + horse storage)
  4. Skull Lake (Korok seeds + Naydra Dragon farming)
  5. Return south through Eldin toward Tera for Great Fairy upgrades

Key Tips

  • Bring cold resistance gear — the Akkala Highlands have temperature drop at altitude, particularly the cliff approaches to the lab in the predawn hours
  • Stock arrows before visiting — the surrounding Hinox camps, Moblin outposts, and potential Gloom Hands encounters in the Depths beneath the lab all consume arrows quickly
  • The Depths entrance below the lab is directly above Rasitakiwak Lightroot — activate it as your first Depths waypoint before ascending back to the lab
  • Night sky viewing from the observation dome is legitimate content — the Akkala region has minimal light pollution and Star Fragments fall with higher visibility here, making the dome a prime Star Fragment farming camp
  • Don't skip the vault — the Royal Guard Bow alone is worth the detour, and the Bubbulfrog + Ancient Arrows make it one of the highest-reward single rooms in the northeast
