How the Compendium Works

The Purah Pad Camera

Obtained early in the main quest after visiting Lookout Landing. Open the Purah Pad, select Camera, and snap a photo of any creature, monster, item, or piece of equipment. The subject must be clearly in frame for the entry to register. You can zoom in for distant or dangerous subjects.

Sensor+ Upgrade

Visit the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab and complete Robbie's research quests to unlock Sensor+. This upgrade lets you set any compendium entry as a tracking target. Your Purah Pad will beep when you are near a matching subject, making it essential for hunting down the last few entries in each category.

Buying Missing Photos

After completing "Camera Work in the Depths," Robbie sells missing compendium photos for 100 rupees each. The purchased photos are lower quality than player-taken ones but still count toward completion. This is your safety net for any entries you missed or cannot find.

🦌 Creatures

Every animal, insect, frog, lizard, and fish in Hyrule. Creatures must be photographed in the wild using the Purah Pad camera. Many are skittish and flee when Link approaches, making stealth armor or Sneaky Elixirs essential for completing this section.

83

Completion Tip

Equip the Stealth armor set and crouch-walk toward creatures at night when many species spawn. Use the Sensor+ to track missing entries by setting it to detect the creature type you need.

Full Compendium (585 / 585)

Tips for 100% Completion

Filling every slot takes dedication. These strategies will help you track down the most elusive entries and avoid common pitfalls.

Use Sensor+ Religiously

Once you upgrade your Purah Pad sensor at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, set it to track compendium entries you already own. When exploring, switch the sensor target to missing categories. The sensor pings when a matching entry is nearby, making it invaluable for hunting down the last few entries in each section.

Buy Missing Photos from Robbie

After completing the "Camera Work in the Depths" quest, Robbie at Hateno Ancient Tech Lab will sell you any compendium photo you are missing for 100 rupees each. This is a safety net for missable entries, but photographs you take yourself have higher resolution and custom framing.

Explore All Three Map Layers

The surface, sky islands, and Depths each contain unique compendium entries. Many players overlook the Depths entirely. Systematically light Lightroots in the Depths to reveal the map and find unique monsters, weapons, and materials that do not spawn anywhere else.

Photograph Before Interacting

Always photograph creatures, items, and equipment before picking them up or engaging in combat. Some items and enemies are one-time encounters. Once a monster is defeated or an item is collected, you may lose the chance to photograph it if it does not respawn.

Track Progress by Category

Open your compendium and check each category for gaps (shown as dark silhouettes with question marks). Focus on one category at a time to stay organized. The creatures and materials sections are the largest and most time-consuming—save them for dedicated farming sessions.

Blood Moon Resets Enemies

Every Blood Moon respawns all overworld enemies. If you missed photographing a specific monster variant, wait for the next Blood Moon and return to its spawn location. Blood Moons occur roughly every 2 hours and 48 minutes of real-time play.

Ride All Four Dragons

Each dragon — Dinraal, Naydra, Farosh, and the Light Dragon — provides four unique materials (Scale, Claw, Fang Shard, Horn) that are separate compendium entries. You must physically land on the dragon and harvest from each body part. Budget at least one full in-game day per dragon for efficient farming.

Photograph Equipment on Enemies First

Most weapons held by enemies count for the compendium when photographed while the enemy holds them. This is critical for pristine weapons in the Depths: photograph the weapon before the enemy drops it on defeat. A few unique weapons only appear in Depths enemy hands and cannot be found as ground drops.

Depths-Exclusive Monster Variants

Several monsters have Depths-exclusive variants — Horriblins, Frox, Like Likes, and Gloom-infused versions of standard enemies. These do not appear on the surface and are completely separate compendium entries. Map out Lightroot locations and clear Depths zones systematically to find all unique monster spawns.

Don't Forget Sky Island Creatures

Sky islands host several creatures and plants not found on the surface — Sundelions, Zonai Dispensers, sky fish, and unique Constructs. After activating each Skyview Tower region, do a thorough sweep of the surrounding sky islands before moving on. Sky island content does not reset reliably with Blood Moons.

Check Every Shrine Chest

Many rare treasure and equipment entries are locked inside shrine treasure chests and appear nowhere else in the overworld. Run all 152 shrines and photograph every chest item before picking it up. Zonai devices found only in shrine chests are among the easiest entries to permanently miss.

Watch Out: Potentially Missable Entries

Most compendium entries respawn via Blood Moon, but a handful are easy to overlook or require specific conditions to appear. Photograph these early to avoid a long late-game cleanup hunt.

Creatures

Satori (Lord of the Mountain)

Only appears at Satori Mountain on specific nights under a green aurora. Does not follow Blood Moon timing. Check the mountain regularly or use online guides to predict its spawn.

Monsters

Gloom Hands

Spawn only at specific spots, often blocking Chasm entrances. If you clear them and don't photograph immediately, you must wait until the next Blood Moon for them to return.

Monsters

Phantom Ganon

Appears only after defeating Gloom Hands. You must fight Gloom Hands first without fleeing. Photograph Phantom Ganon before the final hit as it will not respawn in the same location.

Materials

Dragon Scale / Claw / Fang / Horn (All 4 Dragons)

Sixteen total dragon material entries across four dragons. Each dragon yields only one material per real-world day. Plan multiple sessions per dragon and ride each body part.

Equipment

Pristine Depths Weapons

Pristine versions of many weapons only appear held by Depths enemies or in specific chests. Photograph the weapon while the enemy holds it — do not wait until after the fight.

Equipment

Shrine Chest Equipment

Some equipment variants only appear in shrine treasure chests and never as overworld drops. Open chests, photograph the item immediately, then pick it up.

Monsters

Sky Island Constructs

Construct variants on remote sky islands can be overlooked during casual play. Some high-tier Constructs only exist on islands accessed via specific sky routes or Ultrahand builds.

Creatures

Sunset Firefly

Only active at dusk in specific forest clearing locations. Timing the photograph window is narrow. Use Sneaky Elixir and arrive just before sunset.
