Ancient Shrine Guide — All 152 Shrines, Rewards & Efficient Route
Ancient Shrine Guide — All 152 Shrines in TotK
The 152 Ancient Shrines of TotK are the primary source of Light of Blessing — the currency used to upgrade your hearts and stamina at Goddess Statues. Each shrine holds one Light of Blessing, and every four blessings can be traded for one new Heart Container or Stamina Vessel. This guide covers shrine types, efficient routes, and tips for tackling each region.
How Shrines Work
Activation: Approach the glowing orange-red shrine → interact to unlock fast travel point.
Completion: Solve the puzzle (or enter a Blessing shrine) → open the chest (optional) → claim Light of Blessing at the altar.
Reward: 1 Light of Blessing per shrine. Some shrines also hold chests with weapons, armor pieces, or rare materials.
Unlocking hearts/stamina: Collect 4 Lights of Blessing → visit any Goddess Statue → trade for 1 Heart Container or 1 Stamina Vessel.
Full completion: All 152 shrines = 152 Lights of Blessing = 38 upgrades total (mix of hearts and stamina).
Blessing Shrines vs. Puzzle Shrines
Blessing Shrines (Rauru's Blessings)
What they are: Shrines with no puzzle. You enter → open a chest → claim the blessing.
How to unlock them: These shrines are locked until you complete a specific overworld challenge nearby — a "Shrine Quest." The challenge could be:
- Defeating a mini-boss guarding the entrance
- Solving an environmental puzzle in the overworld
- Completing a quest given by an NPC
- Activating a mechanism (lighting torches, rolling a ball, etc.)
Identifying them: The shrine glows normally but cannot be entered until you complete the associated challenge. An NPC nearby often hints at what's needed.
Value: Same 1 Light of Blessing as puzzle shrines. The chest inside is often better than average (unique armor pieces, strong weapons).
Count: Roughly 30–40 of the 152 shrines are Blessing shrines.
Puzzle Shrines
What they are: The majority of shrines. You enter and solve an interior puzzle using your abilities (Ultrahand, Recall, Ascend, Fuse, etc.).
Categories:
- Ultrahand puzzles: Build or manipulate structures to reach the altar
- Recall puzzles: Reverse the motion of objects to solve path problems
- Ascend puzzles: Use Ascend to pass through ceilings/floors
- Combat trials: Fight a construct guardian to earn the blessing
- Combination puzzles: Use multiple abilities together
Difficulty range: From trivial (2-minute solves) to complex multi-step puzzles (15–20 minutes).
Heart vs. Stamina Priority
You start with 3 hearts and 1 stamina vessel. With 152 shrines you can earn 38 upgrades. The optimal split depends on playstyle:
Hearts-focused build:
- Minimum hearts for survivability: 10–13 hearts
- Recommended: 14–16 hearts for endgame content
- High hearts = survive more hits, more margin for error
Stamina-focused build:
- 2 full stamina wheels = maximum paragliding, climbing, swimming range
- 2.5–3 stamina vessels = ideal for exploration-heavy playstyles
- High stamina = reach more areas, faster traversal
Balanced recommendation:
- First 12 upgrades: alternate hearts/stamina (6 hearts, 2 stamina vessels)
- After that: prioritize based on what you're dying or running out of
- Late game: 15–16 hearts + 2 full stamina wheels is a strong endgame target
Note: You can always respec by visiting a Horned Statue (found in Lurelin Village and elsewhere) — trade a heart for a Light of Blessing, then re-spend. It costs rupees but enables full respec.
Shrine Distribution by Region
Great Sky Island (Tutorial Region)
Shrines: 4
- Ukouh Shrine (Ultrahand tutorial)
- In-isa Shrine (Fuse tutorial)
- Gutanbac Shrine (Ascend tutorial)
- Nachoyah Shrine (Recall tutorial)
Notes: These 4 are mandatory — you cannot leave the island without completing them. They teach the 4 core abilities. Do not skip the chests inside; they contain strong early-game gear.
Central Hyrule
Shrines: ~20 Key shrines:
- Kyokugon Shrine — near Lookout Landing (easy Ultrahand puzzle)
- Sinakawak Shrine — hot air balloon mechanic
- Riogok Shrine — stone slab rotation puzzle
- Mayachin Shrine — ball-in-hole puzzle using stakes and recall
Strategy: Central Hyrule shrines are excellent for early-game heart grinding. Many are easy and fast. Complete all Central Hyrule shrines before moving to tougher regions.
Akkala Region (Northeast)
Shrines: ~10 Notable shrines:
- Rasitakiwak Shrine — combat trial
- Mayanas Shrine — lever and weight puzzle
- Igashuk Shrine — requires completing a gliding challenge (Blessing shrine)
Strategy: Akkala shrines cluster near the Akkala Citadel and East Akkala Sea coast. Sweep from the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower.
Eldin Region / Death Mountain (North)
Shrines: ~10 Notable shrines:
- Marakuguc Shrine — minecart rail puzzle
- Mogawak Shrine — water and wheel mechanic
- Ekochiu Shrine — combat trial (strong Construct guardian)
Strategy: Wear Flamebreaker Armor before entering Death Mountain shrines — surface lava burns you. Most Death Mountain shrines are Blessing shrines unlocked by overworld challenges (lighting braziers, solving lava flow puzzles).
Lanayru / Zora's Domain (East)
Shrines: ~12 Notable shrines:
- Ihen-a Shrine — wind and current puzzle
- Sibajitak Shrine — floating platform timing puzzle
- Kisinona Shrine — requires Blessing challenge near Zora's Domain waterfall
Strategy: Many Lanayru shrines involve water mechanics. The Zora Armor (swim up waterfalls) makes reaching several Blessing shrine challenges much easier. Complete Zora's Domain dungeon before sweeping all Lanayru shrines.
Necluda / East Necluda (Southeast)
Shrines: ~12 Notable shrines:
- Yomizuk Shrine — target shooting puzzle
- Susuyai Shrine — construct combat trial
- Rakashog Shrine — Blessing shrine requiring Lynel defeat in overworld
Strategy: Necluda is one of the more spread-out regions. Use Talus and terrain marker fast travel to efficiently sweep. The Hateno Village area has a dense cluster of 3–4 shrines within short range.
Faron Region (South)
Shrines: ~10 Notable shrines:
- Mayatat Shrine — wind fan and ball puzzle
- Siwakama Shrine — multi-ball routing puzzle
- Jojon Shrine — Blessing shrine (complete overworld cave challenge)
Strategy: Faron is dense with jungle and ruins. Many shrines are on elevated positions or require navigating waterfalls. The Popla Foothills Skyview Tower reveals most Faron shrines.
Gerudo Region (Southwest)
Shrines: ~12 Notable shrines:
- Soryotanog Shrine — sand mechanic, buried items
- Rakashog Shrine — combat trial
- Irasak Shrine — lightning rod and electricity puzzle (wear Rubber Armor)
Strategy: Gerudo has several hard-to-reach shrines in the Gerudo Highlands (cold/snowy terrain) and Gerudo Desert (heat damage). Pack Spicy Pepper food for cold and Cooling Elixirs for heat. The Gerudo Highlands shrines are among the trickiest — bring stamina-restoring food.
Tabantha Region (Northwest)
Shrines: ~10 Notable shrines:
- Ijo-o Shrine — wing glider puzzle
- Gatakis Shrine — wind current traversal
- Moshapin Shrine — Blessing shrine after completing a sky island challenge
Strategy: Tabantha has several sky island shrines that require paragliding from Skyview Towers. Activate the Rospro Pass Skyview Tower and Pikida Stonegrove Skyview Tower for full coverage.
Hebra Region (North-Northwest)
Shrines: ~10 Notable shrines:
- Ganos Shrine — ice and melt puzzle
- Kyokojot Shrine — snowball rolling challenge
- Sahirow Shrine — Blessing shrine after defeating overworld ice construct
Strategy: Hebra is cold — pack Spicy Peppers or wear Snowquill Armor. Many Hebra shrines are on elevated mountain positions accessible by launching from the Pikida Stonegrove Skyview Tower.
Sky Islands (All Regions)
Shrines: ~15–20 distributed across the sky Notable shrines:
- Mayaumekis Shrine — skydiving ring challenge
- Jochi-iu Shrine — construct combat trial in sky setting
- Minetak Shrine — gear and rotation puzzle
Strategy: Sky shrines require either launching from Skyview Towers or building flying Zonai vehicles. The Skyview Towers in each region reveal the sky islands above that region. Do sky shrines in clusters — build a Zonai glider and sweep a sky area before coming back down.
The Depths
Shrines: 0 (shrines are surface/sky only)
Note: The Depths contains Lightroots instead of shrines — Lightroots illuminate the Depths and correspond to surface shrines directly above them. Activating a Lightroot reveals the nearby area in the Depths. Lightroots do not give Light of Blessing.
Efficient Completion Order
Phase 1: Great Sky Island (Mandatory)
Complete all 4 tutorial shrines to unlock paraglider and proceed.
Phase 2: Central Hyrule Sweep (~20 shrines)
Central Hyrule shrines are dense, easy, and fast. Grinding ~10–12 hearts here sets you up well for the rest of the game.
Phase 3: Temple Region Shrines
Complete shrines in the region around each temple before and after the temple itself:
- Wind Temple → Rito Village area (Tabantha/Hebra)
- Fire Temple → Goron City area (Eldin)
- Water Temple → Zora's Domain area (Lanayru)
- Lightning Temple → Gerudo Town area (Gerudo)
- Spirit Temple → Depths entry points
Phase 4: Remaining Region Sweeps
After temples, systematically sweep:
- Akkala → Necluda → Faron → remaining Tabantha/Hebra
Phase 5: Sky Island Shrines
With full abilities and stamina, tackle sky island shrines using Zonai devices.
Phase 6: Remaining Blessing Shrines
Track down any uncompleted Shrine Quests using the map (uncompleted shrines show as orange on the map without a green checkmark).
Tips for Hard Shrines
Ultrahand Puzzles
- Think about the destination first, then work backward to what structure you need
- Most Ultrahand puzzles have multiple valid solutions — don't get locked into one approach
- Platforms that look like sleds usually need to be pushed with a fan or hit with a ball
Recall Puzzles
- Activate Recall on a moving object → it reverses its path for ~10 seconds
- Position yourself on the object while it moves in the reversed direction
- Recall stacks: you can recall an object, ride it to a new position, then recall again
Combat Trials
- Shrine constructs have predictable attack patterns: charge, swing, ranged shot
- Flurry Rush after a dodge is the fastest way through combat trials
- One-shot options: Silver Lynel Saber Horn + good weapon = massive damage
Ascend Puzzles
- Ascend works through any solid surface you're directly beneath
- If stuck in an Ascend puzzle, look for the highest solid surface you can reach
- Some Ascend puzzles require building a platform first (Ultrahand) to get into range
Shrine Quests (Blessing Shrine Unlocks)
Shrine Quests are sidequests that unlock Blessing shrines. They appear in your adventure log. Common types:
| Type | Example | Solution | |------|---------|---------| | Defeat guardian | Kill Lynel/Hinox nearby | Combat | | Light all torches | Fire arrows or Flint | Exploration | | Ball-in-hole | Use terrain or Ultrahand | Puzzle | | Sky island challenge | Navigate floating obstacle course | Traversal | | NPC quest chain | Help NPC, shrine unlocks | Dialogue |
Finding Shrine Quests: Look for glowing monks near but not inside shrines, or NPCs with orange exclamation marks near unactivated shrines.
Quick Tips
- Open every shrine chest before claiming the blessing — chests contain weapons, armor, and materials that disappear if you forget.
- Fast travel shrines are more valuable than their Light of Blessing in early game — activate shrines even before completing them to unlock the warp point.
- Mark incomplete shrines on your map with a pin so you know which ones still need completion.
- Shrines near Skyview Towers are almost always easy beginner puzzles — great for warm-up farming.
- The Horned Statue in Lurelin Village allows heart/stamina respec — don't stress about every upgrade decision.
- Combat trial shrines are often faster than puzzle shrines if you have strong weapons — stock up before shrine sweeping.
