Blood Moon Schedule & Farming Guide TotK
Blood Moon Schedule & Farming Guide — Tears of the Kingdom
The Blood Moon is TotK's world-reset mechanic — a crimson moon that rises periodically and respawns all enemies, ore deposits, and certain resources. Understanding Blood Moon timing and using it for systematic farming is the foundation of efficient late-game rupee generation and material collection.
When Does Blood Moon Occur?
TotK Blood Moon trigger conditions:
- Time-based: Every 7 real-time days of gameplay (approximately). The game tracks play time cumulatively — not calendar days.
- Forced trigger: Blood Moon is triggered immediately when Link enters specific areas (notably the Hyrule Castle Sanctum) on certain quest states.
- Manual force: You can force a Blood Moon to occur on the next in-game midnight by standing in an open area and waiting. Save + reload after approximately 2 hours of play if you need a Blood Moon for farming.
When it happens: Blood Moon occurs at in-game midnight (24:00/00:00). The sky turns red approximately 5 minutes before, giving you time to position for farming.
What respawns on Blood Moon:
- All overworld enemies (Lynels, Hinox, Talus, Gleeoks, Molduga, standard monsters)
- All ore deposits (gems, Luminous Stones, Zonaite veins)
- All Depths enemy camps (Yiga Clan hideouts, Construct camps)
- All monster camps (Bokoblin/Moblin/Lizalfos outposts)
- Trees (Korok Leaves, Wood)
- Bush/grass resources
What does NOT respawn:
- Lightroots (permanent once activated)
- Shrine seals (once completed, never resets)
- Korok Seeds (never respawn — each is permanent)
- NPC quest progress (quest completions persist)
- Purchased items/shops (vendors restock normally, not Blood Moon dependent)
Optimal Pre-Blood Moon Positioning
The 5-minute warning before Blood Moon (red sky) is your setup window. Position yourself for maximum farming efficiency:
Setup 1 — Lynel Farming Position
Walk to the Coliseum Ruins or nearest Silver Lynel patrol zone. When midnight strikes and Blood Moon completes, the Silver Lynel will be at its spawn point ready to fight.
Yield per Blood Moon at Coliseum: Silver Lynel Saber Horn (×1–2), Silver Lynel Mace Horn (×0–1), Silver Lynel Guts (×1), Lynel Hoof (×1). Total: 4–5 high-value items in 3–4 minutes.
Setup 2 — Ore Deposit Position
Stand at a mineral-rich location: Akkala Citadel ruins, Eldin Death Mountain foothills, or Mount Lanayru. After Blood Moon, strike every ore deposit in the area — they all respawn simultaneously.
Yield per Blood Moon at Akkala Citadel: 8–12 ore strikes, yielding: Amber (×3–5), Opal (×2–3), Ruby (×1), Diamond (×0–1). Total value: 800–2,000 rupees per run.
Setup 3 — Talus Boss Farm Position
Position at the nearest Stone Talus spawn (12 Talus in overworld, 3 in Depths). Each Talus drops rare gems — Diamond is guaranteed from Black Talus, Luminous Stone from Luminous Talus.
Yield per Blood Moon: 1 Talus = 1 Diamond (Black Talus) = 500 rupees. 3 Talus circuit = 1,500 rupees minimum.
Setup 4 — Gleeok Farm Position
Position near a King Gleeok spawn (3 in overworld — Bridge of Hylia, East Hyrule, North Hyrule). King Gleeoks drop: Gleeok Wings, Gleeok Guts (×2), and Gleeok Horn variants.
Yield per Blood Moon: 3 King Gleeok circuit = 6 Gleeok Guts + 3 horns. Gleeok Guts sell for 95 rupees each — 570 rupees from guts alone. More importantly: horns are S-tier Fuse materials.
Forcing a Blood Moon Early
If you need a Blood Moon before the natural cycle, use the cook-and-wait method:
- Stand outdoors in an open area (no roof/cave)
- Light a campfire and sit at it until midnight
- If the Blood Moon timing window has passed (2+ hours of recent play), Blood Moon will trigger at the next midnight
- If it doesn't trigger, cook a 5-ingredient meal (resets the "recent cook" counter) then sleep at the campfire again
Reliability: The forced method works approximately 80% of the time when played for 2+ hours. If it fails, continue playing for another 30–60 minutes before trying again.
Alternative force method: Enter Hyrule Castle Sanctum (the final boss room) — Blood Moon always triggers immediately when approaching. Exit before engaging the boss to use this as a forced trigger without committing to the fight.

Blood Moon Cooking Window
The Blood Moon itself — the red-sky phase — has a special cooking bonus: all meals cooked during Blood Moon automatically become Critical Success meals (maximum effect). A normal Hearty meal might give 4 yellow hearts; a Blood Moon Critical Hearty meal gives the maximum yellow heart count (10+ depending on ingredients).
How to use it:
- Stock up on valuable ingredients (Hearty Radish, Enduring Shroom, Giant Brightbloom Seed)
- At the red-sky warning, rush to a cooking pot
- Cook rapidly during the Blood Moon window (approximately 3 minutes of red sky)
- Every meal will hit Critical Success — maximum buffs, maximum duration
Best Blood Moon meals to cook:
- 5× Hearty Radish — Full heart refill + 10 yellow hearts (endgame survivability)
- 5× Enduring Shroom — Full stamina + 3 yellow stamina wheels
- 4× Mighty Banana + 1 Lynel Guts — Attack Up +3 for 30 minutes
- 5× Bright Eyed Crab — 3× defense + 30 minute duration
Critical Success bonus on Blood Moon is guaranteed — never waste this window.
Blood Moon Strategy by Game Stage
Early Game (0-20 hours)
- Don't specifically farm Blood Moon — let it happen naturally
- When it triggers: clear the nearest monster camp, harvest nearby ore, collect any visible Brightbloom Seeds
- Focus on learning what respawns, not optimizing it
Mid Game (20-50 hours)
- Start positioning near Hinox and Stone Talus before midnight
- Use the cooking bonus for attack and defense meals
- Farm Coliseum Silver Lynel if confident in combat
Late Game (50+ hours)
- Full farming routes — Lynel circuit + ore sweep + Depths run
- Cooking window is mandatory for meal stockpiling
- 3,000-5,000 rupees per Blood Moon cycle becomes achievable
Blood Moon is the heartbeat of TotK's economy — every cycle is a replenishment of the world's resources. Align your farming loops to it and the endgame economy becomes trivially manageable.
