Bubbulfrog Guide — All Bubbul Gems & Rewards
Bubbulfrog Guide — Bubbul Gems & Koltin Rewards
Bubblfrogs are glowing blue frogs hiding in caves throughout Hyrule. Each one drops a Bubbul Gem when defeated — and Koltin, an NPC collector, trades increasingly rare rewards for your gem collection. This guide covers finding Bubblfrogs and maximizing your gem-to-reward efficiency.
What Is a Bubbulfrog?
A Bubbulfrog is a glowing blue frog-like creature that clings to cave ceilings and walls. They appear in virtually every cave in Hyrule — one per cave, always hidden on a ceiling or upper surface. They flee when approached, so you need to shoot them with an arrow before they escape.
Key facts:
- One Bubbulfrog per cave location (most caves)
- Defeating one gives 1 Bubbul Gem permanently
- Bubblfrogs do not respawn after Blood Moon — each is a one-time collectible
- Total Bubblfrogs in the game: approximately 147
How to Find Bubblfrogs
Detection Methods:
- Listen: Bubblfrogs make a distinctive bubble-popping sound. Enter a cave and stand still — the sound leads you toward the ceiling area where it's hiding.
- Look for glow: They emit a faint blue glow. In dark caves, sweep the ceiling with your camera.
- Brightbloom Seeds: Throw a Brightbloom Seed or Giant Brightbloom to illuminate cave ceilings quickly.
- Ascend shortcut: Some Bubblfrogs are high on ceilings — use Ascend to pop through a nearby ceiling rock to appear above and drop down near it.
Shooting Tips:
- Approach slowly — Bubblfrogs flee at ~15 meters range
- ZL + arrow aim — use slow-motion aim while jumping to get a cleaner shot at ceiling targets
- Arrow type doesn't matter — any arrow kills instantly
- If it starts fleeing (hopping around ceiling), it has a 5-second escape window before it warps away
- Miss: If a Bubbulfrog escapes, exit the cave and re-enter — it reappears

Koltin — The Gem Trader
Who is Koltin? Koltin is an NPC who desperately wants to "become a Bubbulfrog." He appears in two locations:
- First meeting: Near Woodland Stable, north of Hyrule Castle — he's there with his brother Kilton at night
- Subsequent encounters: After talking to him, Koltin moves to a new location each time you trade with him. A purple glow marks his new spot on the map
Finding Koltin: After your first trade, Kilton (his brother) tells you roughly where Koltin went. Look for the purple sparkle at night. He moves through ~10 different locations around Hyrule.

Best Rewards — Priority Guide
Top Tier (Farm For These)
Majora's Mask (15 gems) — Makes enemies ignore Link briefly. Particularly useful for infiltrating enemy camps or sneaking through areas without fighting. One of the most practically useful masks.
Phantom Armor Set (20/30/40/50 gems) — The Phantom Armor chest piece alone gives +25 attack power. Stacking the full set provides exceptional offense for mid-game. Not the best defense, but the attack bonus is significant.
Zonaite Armor Set (8/10/12 gems) — Reduces Zonai device energy consumption when worn. Directly extends Zonai vehicle battery life. Essential for heavy Zonai build players.
Evil Spirit Armor Set (65/80/99 gems) — End-reward set with strong stats and spooky aesthetic. The full set is the capstone of the Bubbulfrog hunting side content.
Mid Tier
Monster Masks (1–7 gems) — Each mask makes that monster type ignore Link (Bokoblins ignore Bokoblin Mask wearer, etc.). The Lynel Mask is the most valuable — approach Lynels without triggering combat.
Like Like Stone (6 gems) — A material needed for specific armor upgrades. Only obtainable here and as a drop from Like Like enemies.
Efficient Bubbulfrog Route Tips
-
Activate cave icons on map first — Open map and navigate to cave icons to plan routes by region. Clear all caves in one region before moving to the next.
-
Night hunting (optional) — Bubblfrogs don't change behavior at night, but night travel lets you find Koltin for trading simultaneously.
-
Use Brightbloom Seeds — Keep 10–15 in your quick menu. Throw one into a cave immediately on entry to illuminate the ceiling and spot the Bubbulfrog fast.
-
Check Depths caves — Easy to miss, but some Depths caves have Bubblfrogs too. Mark them as you discover Depths lightroots.
-
Milestones matter more than totals — Priority: get to 15 gems (Majora's Mask), then 20/30/40/50 (Phantom Armor set), then push to 65/80/99 (Evil Spirit set) if you want the full collection.
Tracking Your Progress
The Adventure Log doesn't track Bubbulfrogs specifically, but:
- Koltin tells you how many gems you've traded with him
- The game tracks "Caves Discovered" in the Adventure Log → explore all named caves = all Bubblfrogs accessible
- Community maps (TotK interactive) have all 147 Bubbulfrog locations marked
