Advanced Cooking Guide — Critical Hits & Monster Extract
Beyond basic cooking, TotK has advanced mechanics that can dramatically increase meal power — critical hits that add bonus hearts or duration, Monster Extract as a wildcard ingredient, and Blood Moon timing that maximizes every dish. This guide covers the mechanics that most players never discover.
Cooking Critical Hits
What they are: When cooking, there's a random chance of a "critical hit" — the meal's effects are boosted beyond normal values.
Critical hit bonuses (depending on meal type):
- HP restore dishes: +3 bonus Yellow Hearts (bonus hearts above max HP)
- Duration dishes (effects with timers): +Extra minutes of effect duration
- Effect-strength dishes (attack boost, etc.): One tier higher effect level
Triggering critical hits:
- Random base chance: approximately 10-15% per cook
- Guaranteed critical: Adding a Dragon Part to any recipe always triggers a critical hit
- Blood Moon timing: Cooking during a Blood Moon has significantly increased critical hit chance
Dragon Part trick: A single Farosh Scale, Naydra Claw, or any Dragon material added to a recipe guarantees the critical hit. The Dragon Part is consumed but the critical hit is worth it for powerful dishes.
Monster Extract — The Wildcard Ingredient
Monster Extract is obtained from the Kilton Shop (Koltin after the questline) — it costs Mon (monster currency).
Effect when added to a recipe:
- Replaces the numerical values of the recipe with random values
- On success: the dish gains maximum possible effect (max hearts, max duration, max strength)
- On failure: the dish may be minimal value or only restore 1/4 heart
The gamble: Monster Extract is a complete randomizer. It can produce a dish worth 5× a normal version, or a worthless dish. It cannot be predicted — it's truly random.
Best use for Monster Extract:
- Use it with recipes that already have decent base values (you benefit from max effect, not minimum)
- Good with elixirs (the randomness applies to duration/strength) — max duration elixirs are extremely valuable
- Avoid with your best ingredients — if the roll fails, you've wasted them
Monster Extract farming: Available from Koltin after completing his Bubbulfrog quest chain. Stock accumulates slowly — don't waste charges.
Blood Moon Cooking
During a Blood Moon: Critical hit rates for cooking are elevated (approximately doubled).
How to use this:
- When you notice the red sky of an incoming Blood Moon → immediately cook
- Batch-cook all your pending recipes during the Blood Moon window
- The Blood Moon lasts approximately 3-5 minutes in-game before returning to normal
What to cook during a Blood Moon:
- Your highest-value recipes (Endura Elixirs, Hearty meals, long-duration dishes)
- Any dish where a critical hit significantly matters
- Stockpile for upcoming temple runs or exploration sessions
Timing trick: You can trigger a Blood Moon by sleeping at an inn repeatedly if you need to force one. However, this is inefficient — Blood Moons happen naturally every 7-8 in-game days.
Yellow Hearts — Bonus HP System
Standard meals restore HP up to your heart max. But some meals grant Yellow Hearts (bonus hearts above your maximum):
What gives Yellow Hearts:
- Hearty Ingredients (Hearty Radish, Hearty Durian, Hearty Salmon, etc.)
- Critical hits on HP-restore dishes (+3 Yellow Hearts per critical)
Yellow Hearts behavior:
- They add temporary hearts above your max
- Any damage removes them first before regular hearts
- They don't restore — once lost, they're gone
- Maximum stored: Approximately 25-30 Yellow Hearts
Hearty Meal strategy:
- Cook 5× Hearty Durian → maximum Yellow Hearts (20-25 bonus) + full HP restore
- Cook before boss fights for massive effective HP
- Hearty Salmon + Mushrooms = high Yellow Heart yield with good base restore
Where to find Hearty Ingredients:
- Hearty Durian: Faron forest (southeast Hyrule)
- Hearty Radish: Highland areas
- Hearty Salmon: Mountain lakes at high altitude (Mount Lanayru, Lanayru area rivers)
- Hearty Truffle: Dark caves and Depths adjacent areas
Max Duration Elixirs
Duration elixirs (Fireproof, heat/cold resist, etc.) last longer with more critters or amplifying monster parts.
The formula:
- More critters of the same type = longer duration (3-5 critters = max normal duration)
- Molduga Guts as an ingredient = dramatically extended duration
- Critical hit = +additional minutes
Maximum duration possible:
- 5× Fireproof Lizard + Molduga Guts → Fireproof Elixir (30+ minutes)
- Critical hit version: 45-50 minutes
Endura Elixir:
- 5× Tireless Frog + Molduga Guts → Endura Elixir (restores stamina beyond maximum)
- With critical hit: Maximum temporary stamina wheels
- Best pre-boss or pre-climbing drink in the game
Efficient Batch Cooking
For cooking sessions:
- Sort inventory by ingredient type (herbs, critters, meat separately)
- Plan meals in advance (know what you're cooking before you start)
- Batch cook all same-type recipes (cook all 5 elixirs at once rather than alternating)
- Save expensive ingredients (Molduga Guts, Dragon Parts) for the end of the session when you can verify critical hit rates
Campfire efficiency: Each campfire cook is one recipe. Maximize each by using 5 ingredients when possible — 5-ingredient dishes are always worth more than 1-ingredient dishes for HP meals.
Quick Tips
- Dragon Part = guaranteed critical — for any dish where a critical hit is very valuable (Endura Elixir, Hearty Durian meal), add one Farosh Scale. The guaranteed critical significantly boosts the dish.
- Blood Moon = batch cook window — keep a stock of ready-to-cook ingredient sets. When the Blood Moon hits, immediately open inventory and cook as many dishes as possible in the time window.
- Yellow Hearts before bosses — cook 3-5 Hearty Durians → eat before any boss fight. 20+ bonus Yellow Hearts effectively doubles your HP for the fight.
- Monster Extract experimentation — try Monster Extract on mid-tier dishes first to understand the randomness before using it on premium ingredients. It can make a basic dish incredible or worthless.
- 5 of the same critter — for elixirs, use 5 of the same critter type for maximum duration. Mixing critter types reduces duration and can cancel out effects.
