Cooking Effects Guide — Every Effect & Best Recipes
Cooking is TotK's preparation system — a well-stocked meal inventory can make impossible fights winnable and dangerous environments safe. This guide covers every food effect, how effects stack, and the best recipes for every situation.
How Cooking Works
- Find a Cooking Pot (campfires, stables, towns) or place a Portable Pot (Zonai device)
- Hold up to 5 ingredients from inventory (Y to grab, + to confirm)
- Toss ingredients into the pot
- Meal pops out — effects apply immediately when eaten
Key rules:
- Effects of the same type don't stack — you can't combine two Spicy ingredients for double warmth
- If you mix conflicting effects (Spicy + Chilly), the effects cancel out and you get a plain meal
- Ingredient quality determines effect duration — higher-tier same-effect ingredients = longer duration
- Maximum 5 ingredients per meal — use all 5 slots when cooking for longer duration or higher effect level
All Food Effects
Hearty — Full Restore + Temporary Hearts
What it does: Restores all hearts AND adds yellow "bonus" hearts beyond your maximum Ingredients: Hearty Truffle, Hearty Radish, Hearty Bass, Hearty Durian, Hearty Salmon Best recipe: 5× Hearty Durian = +20 bonus yellow hearts (max possible) Use case: Before any boss fight — pop a 5× Hearty Durian dish for 20 extra hearts of buffer
Energizing — Stamina Restore
What it does: Restores spent stamina immediately (fills the green wheel) Ingredients: Stamella Shroom, Courser Bee Honey, Fleet-Lotus Seeds, Fresh Milk, Restless Cricket Best recipe: 5× Stamella Shroom = full stamina wheel restored Use case: Mid-climb stamina panic — eat to avoid falling off a cliff face
Enduring — Extra Stamina Rings
What it does: Adds temporary yellow stamina rings BEYOND your maximum wheel Ingredients: Endura Carrot, Endura Shroom Best recipe: 5× Endura Carrot = maximum yellow stamina extension (lasts several minutes) Use case: Before a long climb or extended glide — the extra rings give significant buffer
Hasty — Movement Speed Up
What it does: Increases Link's run, walk, and swim speed Ingredients: Hightail Lizard, Hot-Footed Frog, Fleet-Lotus Seeds Best recipe: 3× Hot-Footed Frog + 1× Hightail Lizard = mid-tier speed for ~4 minutes Use case: Long cross-country runs before getting the hoverbike; escaping enemy chases
Sneaky — Stealth Increase
What it does: Reduces noise generated by Link's movement Ingredients: Sneaky River Snail, Blue Nightshade, Silent Shroom Best recipe: 3× Blue Nightshade + 1× Silent Shroom = medium stealth for 5 min Use case: Approaching camps for sneak strikes; Yiga Clan infiltration; hunting animals
Mighty — Attack Up
What it does: Increases all weapon damage output Ingredients: Razorshroom, Razorclaw Crab, Mighty Carp, Mighty Thistle, Mighty Banana Tiers: Low (1–2 ingredients) → Mid → High (5 Mighty ingredients) Best recipe: 4× Mighty Banana + 1× Razorclaw Crab = Attack Up++ for 6 minutes Use case: Before Lynel fights, Gleeok encounters, or any hard boss
Tough — Defense Up
What it does: Reduces damage taken from all sources Ingredients: Ironshroom, Fortified Pumpkin, Armored Carp, Rugged Rhino Beetle Best recipe: 4× Ironshroom + 1× Fortified Pumpkin = Defense Up++ for 6 minutes Use case: Before entering areas with strong enemies; Defense Up pairs well with Gloom resistance
Spicy — Cold Resistance
What it does: Grants cold resistance (tier 1 or 2 depending on ingredients used) Ingredients: Spicy Pepper, Sunshroom, Warm Safflina, Fire Keese Wing Tier 2 cold resistance recipe: 3× Sunshroom + 1× Warm Safflina = Tier 2 cold resistance (survives extreme cold) Use case: Hebra, Lanayru snowfields, high-altitude Gerudo Highlands — anywhere with cold damage
Chilly — Heat Resistance
What it does: Grants heat resistance (Gerudo Desert, Death Mountain approaches) Ingredients: Cool Safflina, Hydromelon, Chillshroom, Ice Keese Wing Recipe: 3× Hydromelon + 1× Cool Safflina = Tier 2 heat resistance Use case: Gerudo Desert daytime exploration; Death Mountain approach without Flamebreaker
Electro — Shock Resistance
What it does: Grants lightning resistance (reduces damage from electric attacks, prevents shock paralysis) Ingredients: Voltfin Trout, Zapshroom, Yellow Chuchu Jelly Recipe: 3× Voltfin Trout + 1× Zapshroom = Shock Resistance for 5 min Use case: Thunder Gleeok fights; Electric Lizalfos areas; stormy weather on metal terrain
Fireproof — Flame Resistance
What it does: Prevents Link from catching fire (not the same as heat resistance) Ingredients: Fireproof Lizard, Smotherwing Butterfly Recipe: 2× Fireproof Lizard + 1× Smotherwing Butterfly = Fireproof Up for 5 min Use case: Eldin / Death Mountain areas above the flamebreaker tier; fire-enemy melee range
Sunny — Gloom Recovery
What it does: Restores Gloomed (dark) hearts — the only food that does this Ingredients: Sundelion (sky island flower) Best recipe: 5× Sundelion = maximum Gloom heart recovery Use case: After Gloom Hand encounters; Depths exploration; Phantom Ganon fights
Elixirs (Non-Food Cooking)
Elixirs use critters (lizards, frogs, bugs) + monster parts instead of food ingredients. Same effects as food but longer duration.
Base formula: Critter with desired effect + any Monster Part = Elixir with that effect
Best elixirs:
| Elixir | Critter | Monster Part | Duration | |--------|---------|-------------|---------| | Mighty Elixir | Bladed Rhino Beetle | Lynel Guts | 5–8 min Attack Up++ | | Tough Elixir | Rugged Rhino Beetle | Hinox Guts | 5–8 min Defense Up++ | | Sneaky Elixir | Sunset Firefly | Keese Wing | 5–8 min Stealth Up++ | | Hasty Elixir | Hot-Footed Frog | Bokoblin Horn | 5 min Speed Up | | Electro Elixir | Thunderwing Butterfly | Aerocuda Eye | 5 min Shock Resist | | Fireproof Elixir | Fireproof Lizard | Hinox Guts | 5 min Fireproof |
Max potency elixir trick: Use Lynel Guts (high-tier monster part) with any effect critter for the maximum duration/tier of that effect elixir.
Critical Cook Mechanics
Critical Cook (Lucky Cook) — a rare chance on any meal that produces enhanced results:
- Extra hearts restored
- Longer effect duration
- Extra yellow hearts added
Triggering critical cooks:
- Cooking during a Blood Moon (just before midnight of a Blood Moon night) dramatically increases critical chance
- Cooking near a fairy (a Great Fairy or small fairy around flowers) raises the chance
- Random baseline: ~5% chance on any meal normally
Best use of Blood Moon cooking:
- Stock up on premium ingredients (Hearty Durian, Mighty Banana, etc.)
- Wait for Blood Moon night
- Cook all your prep meals in the window before/during the Blood Moon
- Critical Heart dishes = +30 hearts instead of +20; Critical Duration meals = double duration
