Complete Cooking Guide — Tears of the Kingdom
Complete Cooking Guide
Cooking is one of the most powerful systems in Tears of the Kingdom. A well-prepared meal can triple your effective health, grant elemental immunity, or max out your stamina. This guide explains how cooking works, which ingredients matter most, and which recipes to prioritize.
How Cooking Works
Find a cooking pot (cauldrons over fires, at stables, in villages) and press A to interact. You can add 1–5 ingredients per meal. Press cook.
Key rules:
- Category bonus: Ingredients of the same effect type boost each other. Five Spicy Peppers gives maximum heat resistance; mixing Spicy Peppers with other ingredients dilutes the duration.
- Hearty ingredients are unique — they add yellow (bonus) hearts regardless of other ingredients.
- Effect duration stacks within the same category (more ingredient levels = longer effect).
- Monster Extract randomizes the effect but can produce the maximum possible version if it succeeds.
- Neutral ingredients (apples, mushrooms, meat, fish) add healing hearts but no special effect. They work as fillers.
- Dragon Parts in meals — adding a Dragon Scale, Fang, Claw, or Horn to a meal maximizes its duration (30 minutes) for that effect. Essential for endgame.

Top Priority Recipes
1. Hearty Meals — Maximum Health
Hearty Durian Dish (5× Hearty Durians)
- Effect: Full heal + 20 bonus yellow hearts
- Why it's the best: Hearty Durians are the most powerful single hearty ingredient. Five of them gives you enormous overflow health.
- Where to find Hearty Durians: Faron region (southeast) — they hang from trees near waterfalls. Also sold at the Lurelin Village merchant.
Quick hearty meal (1 Hearty Durian + 4 neutral items)
- Effect: Full heal + 4 bonus yellow hearts
- Good for: Conservation — saves Hearty Durians for later while still getting a quick heal
Hearty Bass + Hearty Radish + anything (×3)
- Effect: Full heal + 6–8 bonus hearts
- Where to farm: Hearty Bass in Zora's Domain rivers; Hearty Radish in Akkala highland fields
2. Endura Meals — Bonus Stamina
Endura Carrot Dish (5× Endura Carrots)
- Effect: Full stamina restore + 2 extra yellow stamina wheels
- Why it matters: Yellow stamina wheels don't deplete until the bonus is used — essential for climbing long walls or swimming the Zora's Domain waterfalls
- Where to find Endura Carrots: Near shrines and Goddess Statues across Hyrule. Abundant near Korok Forest.
3. Combat Meals — Attack and Defense Buffs
Mighty Elixir (3× Bladed Rhino Beetle + 2 neutral filler)
- Effect: Attack up (Level 2) for 8+ minutes
- Alternative: 5× Mighty Bananas (attack up Level 1, longer duration)
- Where to find Bladed Rhino Beetles: Tree trunks in forested areas (Korok Forest, Necluda), especially at dawn
Tough Elixir (3× Rugged Rhino Beetle + 2 neutral filler)
- Effect: Defense up for 8+ minutes
- Where to find: Same areas as Bladed Rhino Beetle; also Ironshell Crabs in rivers
4. Elemental Resistance Meals
Spicy Sautéed Peppers (5× Spicy Pepper)
- Effect: Cold resistance Level 2 for 8+ minutes
- Essential for: Great Sky Island, Hebra/Rito region, Lanayru Snow Field
- Where to find: Growing near cooking fires at the start of the game; sold at stables
Chilly Elixir (3× Winterwing Butterfly + 2 neutral)
- Effect: Heat resistance for 8+ minutes
- Essential for: Death Mountain, Gerudo Desert afternoon, Eldin region
- Alternative: Cool Safflina cooked with fish gives similar effect
Fireproof Elixir (3× Fireproof Lizard + 2 neutral)
- Effect: Prevents Link from catching fire — required for Death Mountain interior
- Where to find: Fireproof Lizards scurry around Death Mountain base; catch them carefully
5. Sundelion Meals — Gloom Recovery (Depths Critical)
Sundelion + Any food (×4)
- Effect: Restores a set amount of Gloom Hearts + heals normal damage
- Critical for: Any extended Depths session
- Where to find Sundelions: Sky islands throughout Hyrule (they grow on the floating platforms). Stock up during sky island exploration.
Tip: Sundelion meals are the only food that restores Gloom-damaged hearts. Without them in the Depths, Gloom accumulates until you leave. Carry at least 10 servings per Depths session.
Dragon Parts in Cooking — Maximum Duration
Adding any Dragon Part (Scale, Claw, Fang, or Horn) from Dinraal, Naydra, Farosh, or the Light Dragon to a meal maximizes that meal's effect duration to 30 minutes. This applies to any effect-granting meal.
Example:
- Regular Spicy Pepper Dish: 5 minutes cold resistance
- Spicy Pepper Dish + Dinraal's Scale: 30 minutes cold resistance
This is the most powerful cooking technique for endgame content. Farm dragon parts efficiently — see the Dragon Parts Farming Guide.
Elixirs — Bug + Monster Part Recipes
Elixirs use critters (bugs, frogs, lizards) + monster parts (any, they're neutral boosters). The critter determines the effect; the monster part determines the potency/duration.
Potency chart: | Monster Part | Potency Level | |-------------|---------------| | Any Bokoblin/Moblin horn, scale | Level 1 | | Lynel Horn | Level 2 | | Boss material (Molduga Fin, etc.) | Level 3 |
Most useful elixirs:
- Hasty Elixir — Hot-Footed Frog + any part = speed boost (great for open-world traversal)
- Sneaky Elixir — Sunset Firefly + any part = stealth boost (Korok seeds, approaching enemies)
- Mighty Elixir — Bladed Rhino Beetle + Lynel Horn = attack Level 2 for 8 minutes
Cooking Efficiency Tips
Pre-cook everything you find. Raw ingredients heal 0.5–1 heart. Cooked food heals 2–5 hearts. Cooking multiplies the healing value of every ingredient.
Five of the same ingredient = max potency. For elemental resistance and buffs, cooking 5 identical ingredients gives the maximum effect level. Mixing ingredients of the same type lengthens duration but doesn't exceed the 5-same potency.
Use cooking pots at stables. Stable cooking pots are always lit. Cook in bulk before long dungeon runs or Depths expeditions.
Don't waste rare ingredients. Hearty Durians, Endura Carrots, and Dragon Parts are precious. Use them for critical moments (boss fights, Gloom Hand encounters, difficult climbs).
Monster Extract gambling. Monster Extract cooked alone has a random result — it might produce a 30-minute max-effect meal or a 1-minute weak one. Not recommended for consistent results, but fun for experimenting.
