Dye Shop Guide — How to Change Armor Color in TotK
Sayge's Dye Shop — Customizing Armor Color
Sayge's Dye Shop in Hateno Village lets Link change the color of any armor set. Dyeing armor is purely cosmetic — it doesn't affect stats, defense, or set bonuses — but it's one of the most popular customization features in the game. With 15+ colors available and every piece of armor dyeable, you have extensive control over Link's appearance.
Location
Sayge's Dye Shop is in Hateno Village, eastern side of the village near the inn and dye vats.
Coordinates: Approximately 3343, -2120, 0105.
Hateno Village is accessible via the Necluda region, east of Kakariko Village along the main road. The shop has large colored dye vats visible from outside.
How to Dye Armor
- Visit Sayge's Dye Shop in Hateno Village
- Select "I want to dye my clothes"
- Choose which armor piece to dye (head, body, legs — each piece dyed separately)
- Select a color from the available palette
- Pay the cost — 20 Rupees per dye job
- The color is applied instantly
You can dye the same piece multiple times — each dye job costs 20 Rupees regardless of the previous color.
Available Colors
Sayge's palette includes 15 standard colors:
| Color | Notes | |-------|-------| | Red | Bright crimson | | Blue | Royal blue | | Yellow | Sunlight yellow | | White | Clean white, matches Royal Guard aesthetic | | Black | Dark charcoal — popular with stealth builds | | Green | Forest green | | Orange | Deep amber orange | | Purple | Royal purple | | Pink | Soft pink | | Sky Blue | Light azure | | Light Yellow | Pale cream | | Dark Blue | Navy | | Dark Red | Maroon | | Gray | Neutral gray | | Brown | Earthy brown |
Unlocking More Colors
Additional colors unlock when you complete specific quests and bring Sayge the associated dye materials:
- Luminous Yellow — bring Luminous Stone ×10
- Korok Green — complete the Korok Forest questline
- Zora Blue — bring Blue Nightshade ×10
- Goron Red — bring Smotherwing Butterfly ×10
- Gerudo Gold — bring Voltfin Trout ×10
- Royal White — bring White Chuchu Jelly ×10
To unlock a new color, speak to Sayge and select "I want to expand the palette" — she'll explain what materials she needs.
What Can Be Dyed
Almost every armor piece in the game can be dyed. Notable exceptions:
- Champion Leathers / Hylian Tunic variants — some pre-set color locked
- Archaic armor (starting clothes) — basic dyeing supported
- Armor with glowing elements (Depths Armor glow effects) — base color dyes but glow persists
Dyeing a set piece in a coordinated color creates a cohesive look. Popular combinations:
| Build | Armor | Dye Color | |-------|-------|-----------| | Shadow/Assassin | Stealth Set | Black | | Royal Knight | Soldier Set | White + Blue trim | | Desert Wanderer | Gerudo Veil | Gold/Brown | | Depths Explorer | Depths Set | Dark Red | | Classic Link | Hylian Set | Green |
Dye Cost Summary
| Item | Cost | |------|------| | Standard color dye (per piece) | 20 Rupees | | Color palette unlock (material cost) | Free (bring materials) | | Paraglider fabric change | Free (no Rupee cost) |
Dyeing a complete 3-piece armor set costs 60 Rupees total. This is cheap relative to overall Rupee availability — dye frequently and experiment.
Tips
- Dye pieces individually — each armor slot dyes independently. You can have a black chest piece with white legs for deliberate two-tone looks.
- Bring extra Rupees to Hateno — if you're upgrading armor at the Great Fairy Fountain there AND dyeing, budget 60+ Rupees for dye and whatever materials Great Fairy upgrades need.
- Check how dye looks at night — some colors shift significantly under the dark sky. Test dark colors in outdoor lighting.
- Material unlocks are permanent — once you unlock a new color by bringing Sayge materials, it's in the palette forever.
- Paraglider fabric changes are free at the same shop — change both armor color and paraglider design in the same visit.
