Fire Temple Complete Walkthrough: Puzzles, Boss, and Rewards
The Fire Temple is located inside Death Mountain, accessed through a mine cart system in the volcanic caves of Eldin. It's the most navigation-heavy temple in TotK, requiring mastery of the minecart rail system and Yunobo's boulder-roll ability. This guide walks through every lock and the Marbled Gohma boss.
Getting to the Fire Temple
- Complete the Yunobo and Goron City quest line — address the Marbled Rock Roast problem
- Acquire Flamebreaker Armor from Goron City (mandatory — Death Mountain damages Link without it)
- Follow the quest markers to the Eldin cave entrance
- Navigate the minecart system to reach the temple proper
Bring ice arrows and cold/fire-resistant food for the approach. The cave interiors are extreme heat even with Flamebreaker Armor at base level — consider upgrading the armor at a Great Fairy first.
Temple Mechanic: Yunobo's Roll
Yunobo forms into a boulder that Link can launch forward by aiming at him. The boulder roll:
- Breaks cracked rock walls (marked with distinctive cracks)
- Hits switches at a distance
- Damages enemies — extremely useful against the lava-based enemies inside
- Can be redirected with Ultrahand mid-air on some puzzles
The Five Lock Puzzle System
Lock 1 — Minecart Switch Tower
Location: Main entrance area Solution: Use the minecart to reach an elevated gong switch. Hit the gong with Yunobo's roll from the correct rail position. The cart angle matters — ride it to the right angle, then launch.
Lock 2 — Lava Pool Crossing
Location: East wing, lower level Solution: Large platforms float over lava. Use Recall to reverse sinking platforms. Hit the lever switch with a Yunobo launch while standing on the reversed platform.
Lock 3 — Multi-Story Gong Chain
Location: Central shaft, requires riding carts upward Solution: Three gongs on different levels of the central shaft need to be hit in sequence. Ride the rail system to access each level, then time Yunobo launches between rail movements.
Lock 4 — Volcanic Stone Seal
Location: North wing, deep lava zone Solution: A large volcanic rock seal blocks a door. Yunobo's roll at full power breaks through it, but you need the right approach rail to align the shot correctly. Use Ultrahand to redirect a moving cart to line up the shot.
Lock 5 — Ice Seal Mechanism
Location: Top floor Solution: An ice barrier covers the final lock mechanism (seemingly out of place in a fire temple). Ice arrows melt it — fire arrows are ineffective as the heat has no additional effect. Hit the exposed lock switch with Yunobo's roll.
Marbled Gohma Boss Fight
Marbled Gohma is a massive spider with glowing orange Marbled Rock Roast embedded in its legs and body. The rock must be shattered before the core can be damaged.
Phase 1: Aim Yunobo at the glowing Marbled Rock sections on Gohma's legs. A successful hit shatters the rock and stuns the leg, causing Gohma to stumble. Attack the eye while it's face-down after stumbling. Repeat for all legs.
Phase 2 (after initial stun cycle): Gohma climbs the walls and ceiling. Yunobo rolls can knock it down from elevated positions if aimed at the core eye. Time your launches for when Gohma pauses at ceiling attachment points.
Phase 3 (below 33% HP): Gohma drops enormous boulders. Run laterally to avoid the drop zone, then resume Yunobo launches the moment it settles. End the fight quickly — the boulder frequency increases.
Optimal strategy: Bring bomb arrows as backup for the ceiling phase — they reach Gohma when Yunobo's trajectory is hard to angle upward. Keep maximum distance and use the arena's full width to avoid boulder drops.
Rewards
- Yunobo joins as permanent Sage: His boulder roll unlocks for full overworld use
- Heart Container or Stamina Vessel: Temple completion reward
- Death Mountain access: Completing the quest unlocks Goron City's full vendor inventory
Tips
- Flamebreaker Armor must be equipped throughout — lava damage bypasses most buffs
- Ice arrows are surprisingly useful in the Fire Temple for the ice-sealed lock
- Yunobo's roll has a cooldown — time your launches to avoid missing on critical shots
- After completing the temple, Yunobo's roll in the overworld is the best ore-mining tool available
