Frox Complete Guide — The Depths' Largest Bosses
Frox are the apex creatures of the Depths — massive amphibian bosses that swallow Link whole, burrow underground, and have multiple weak-point mechanics. They are among the most distinctive fights in Tears of the Kingdom, requiring specific strategies that leverage the game's ability set in ways most surface combat doesn't. Three Frox variants exist with escalating difficulty.
Frox Variants
| Variant | HP | Ore Eyes | Location | |---------|-----|----------|----------| | Frox | ~1200 | 2 ore eyes | Most Depths regions | | Molduga | ~1500 | N/A | Sand (surface, Gerudo) | | Obsidian Frox | ~1800 | 3 ore eyes | Deep Depths, near Gloom pools | | Blue-White Frox | ~2400 | 4 ore eyes | Depths endgame zones |
Note: Molduga is a related but distinct enemy (desert, not Depths) — covered separately in the Molduga Guide.
Frox Anatomy — Key Mechanics
Ore Eyes: Frox have 2–4 ore ore eyes embedded on their back. These are the ONLY weak points — attacking the body deals no damage. You must hit the ore eyes.
How to expose ore eyes:
- Shoot Frox in its real eye (the single eye on its face) with any arrow — this causes it to flip over or reveal its back
- Brightbloom Seed in its path — Frox are attracted to light; a Brightbloom thrown ahead of them causes them to stop and "eat" the seed, exposing their ore eyes
- When they surface from a burrow — they briefly pause on surface emergence, exposing their back
Step-by-Step Combat
Opening Phase
- Light the area — Brightbloom Seeds are essential; Frox fight in pitch-black Depths sections
- Throw a Brightbloom directly at the Frox — it will rush toward the light and open its mouth
- While it's distracted by the light, position behind it and identify the ore eye locations
Damaging Ore Eyes
- Arrow shots at ore eyes deal full damage
- Melee approach — run up to the Frox from behind and attack the ore eyes with a fused weapon (high-damage fuse materials like Construct Horns maximize this window)
- Fused arrows — Rock Frox Horn + arrow creates a "penetrating" arrow that does +50% damage to ore eye specifically
Frox "Swallow" Attack
If you stand too close to Frox's mouth, it swallows Link whole:
- You appear inside the Frox stomach (a separate fight arena)
- Bomb Arrow the interior walls — 2–3 bomb arrows force Frox to spit you out
- Alternatively, use Ascend through the Frox's roof to exit instantly
The swallow can be prevented by staying away from its front. Always approach from behind.
Burrow Phase
After taking ~30% damage, Frox burrows underground and resurfaces nearby:
- Watch the ground ripple — the surface soil shows movement indicating the direction of travel
- Stand still — if you don't move, Frox surfaces within melee range (intentional; it hunts movement)
- Bomb Arrow the burrow ripple — an arrow detonated in the burrow path stuns it and forces an early surface; immediately run to the back for ore eye attacks
Obsidian and Blue-White Frox
Harder variants add:
Obsidian Frox:
- Extra ore eye (3 total)
- Gloom aura on body — damages you if you walk near it
- Faster burrow speed
Blue-White Frox:
- 4 ore eyes — most damage required
- Ranged Gloom spit attack
- Burrow creates Gloom patches on the surface that persist
Counter for Gloom:
- Depths Armor significantly reduces Gloom damage
- Sundelion dishes restore Gloom-reduced maximum hearts before the fight
- Dashes over Gloom patches (jump + forward roll) minimizes contact time
Locations
| Location | Variant | Notes | |----------|---------|-------| | Central Depths (multiple) | Standard Frox | 5–6 standard Frox in the region | | Akkala Depths | Standard, Obsidian | Near major lightroot cluster | | Eldin Depths | Obsidian | Near Death Mountain underground | | Deep Central Depths | Blue-White | Hardest variant, near Hyrule Castle underground |
Drops
| Drop | Source | Use | |------|--------|-----| | Frox Fang | All Frox | Arrow fuse — piercing damage bonus | | Frox Guts | All Frox | Elixir ingredient — Depths survival bonus | | Frox Fingernail | All Frox | Fuse material | | Obsidian Frox Fang | Obsidian | Higher damage fuse | | Blue-White Frox Fang | Blue-White | Highest Frox fuse bonus |
Tips
- Brightbloom Seeds are the key item — bring 20+ for every Frox fight; the light distraction is the most reliable ore eye exposure method
- Don't fight at ground level — Ascend to a rock formation or ruin structure above the Frox, then drop for ore eye strikes from above (bypasses the swallow threat)
- Never be in front — all Frox danger comes from the front; staying behind them at all times makes the fight trivial
- Sundelion dishes before the fight — Obsidian and Blue-White Frox have significant Gloom; start with maximum hearts restored from Gloom
- Group farming — Frox can spawn in the same area as other Depths enemies; clear the area before engaging Frox so you don't get swarmed mid-fight
