Horriblin Guide — Cave Enemies, Combat & Drops
Horriblin Guide — Cave Ceiling Enemies
Horriblins are lizard-like enemies that cling to cave ceilings, dropping down to attack when Link passes below. They're TotK's primary cave enemy, found in most mid-to-late game caves across all regions. Their combat pattern is distinct from surface enemies — this guide covers how to fight them efficiently and where to farm their drops.
Horriblin Types
Red Horriblin
HP: Low Locations: Most caves across Hyrule — the most common cave enemy
Behavior:
- Clings to ceiling, watching Link
- Drops down when Link is directly below
- Quick multi-hit claw combo on the ground
- Climbs back to ceiling if disengaged
Drops: Horriblin Claws (common), Horriblin Horn (occasional), Horriblin Guts (rare)
Blue Horriblin
HP: Moderate Locations: Mid-game caves (Lanayru, Eldin, Faron)
Behavior:
- Same ceiling pattern as Red
- Faster claw attacks
- Occasionally throws rocks from ceiling before dropping
Black Horriblin
HP: High Locations: Late-game caves, Depths caves
Behavior:
- More aggressive drop timing — drops when Link is near, not directly below
- Multiple enemies often coordinated — drop simultaneously
- Shield behavior: raises arm to block frontal attacks
Silver Horriblin
HP: Very High Locations: End-game caves, deep Depths
Behavior:
- Fastest attack speed of all variants
- Spit attack from ceiling (ranged, before dropping)
- Elite drops (higher Guts rate)
Combat Strategy
The Core Problem
Horriblins on ceilings are difficult to hit with melee weapons. They must come to the ground, and you control when that happens.
Arrow Method (Primary)
How to fight Horriblins efficiently:
- Enter cave → aim bow upward at ceiling Horriblin
- Arrow to body (or headshot) → Horriblin drops from ceiling immediately
- While it recovers on the ground (1–2 seconds after drop) → melee combo
- After melee → it tries to climb back → arrow again to interrupt
- Keep it grounded → finish without it retreating
Key: The arrow-drop → ground melee → arrow interrupt loop keeps the Horriblin on the ground where it's vulnerable.
Headshots
Headshot on a ceiling Horriblin → stagger on impact → longer ground recovery (3–4 seconds instead of 1)
More time to melee = more hits per arrow spent.
Keese Eyeball Arrows in Caves
In a cave with ceiling Horriblins + Keese:
- Keese Eyeball arrow aimed upward → tracks nearest Keese or Horriblin on ceiling
- Clears both enemy types efficiently without precise ceiling aim
Bomb Arrow Ceiling Clear
Multiple Horriblins on the same ceiling section:
- Bomb Arrow into the ceiling cluster → AoE blast drops multiple simultaneously
- All drop stunned → melee AoE (spin attack) → clears entire cluster
When Multiple Drop Simultaneously
Avoid the drop zone:
- Walk slowly into caves → single drops trigger before group drops
- If multiple drop: immediately step back → they cluster on the ground → spin attack combo
Drops and Uses
| Drop | Use | |------|-----| | Horriblin Claws | Fuse weapon tip (+8 attack); Elixir ingredient | | Horriblin Horn | Fuse material — slightly higher attack than Claws; Elixir ingredient | | Horriblin Guts | Elixir duration extender — same function as Bokoblin Guts |
Horriblin Claw fuse: +8 attack. Comparable to Moblin Horn. Good mid-game Fuse before Lynel parts are available.
Guts for elixirs: All three Horriblin drops work in elixirs. Guts provide the best duration extension of the three.
Farming Locations
Faron Cave Cluster
Faron's rainforest caves have dense Horriblin populations:
- 3–6 Red/Blue Horriblins per cave
- 5–8 caves accessible in one loop
- Blood Moon reset
Yield per Faron loop: 15–25 Horriblin Claws, 8–12 Horns, occasional Guts.
Eldin Canyon Caves
Black Horriblins in Eldin caves:
- Mixed with Fire Wizzrobes in some caves
- Flamebreaker Armor recommended
- Better Guts drop rate than Faron (Black > Red)
Depths Caves
Silver Horriblins in Depths cave systems:
- Highest Guts drop rate
- Combined with Poe collection
- Gloom resistance food required
Quick Tips
- Arrow → drop → melee → repeat — the fundamental Horriblin loop. An arrow knocks them off the ceiling instantly; the ground recovery time gives free melee swings. Never try to melee them on the ceiling.
- Walk slowly into new caves — rushing through caves triggers multiple Horriblin drops simultaneously. Walk to trigger one at a time → each drop is a manageable 1v1 rather than a chaotic 3v1.
- Bomb Arrow ceiling clusters — when you see 3+ Horriblins clustered on the same ceiling area, one Bomb Arrow drops them all and stuns them simultaneously. 3 free kills with 1 arrow.
- Spin attack for grounded groups — after multiple Horriblins drop at once, charged one-hand spin attack hits all simultaneously → eliminates the cluster without individual targeting.
- Horriblin Claws are mid-game Fuse — they're less impressive than Lynel parts but much easier to farm. Maintain a stock of 10–15 Horriblin Claws for weapon Fusing when Lynel parts are depleted.
