Lynel Locations Guide — All Lynel Spots, Types & Farming Strategies
Lynel Locations Guide — Every Lynel on the Map, Types & Farming Routes
Lynels are TotK's most powerful standard enemies — centaur-like beasts with massive health pools, devastating attacks, and exceptional material drops. Lynel materials (Horns, Hooves, Guts) are required for top-tier armor upgrades and are among the best Fuse materials in the game. This guide covers every Lynel location, types, and farming efficiency.
Why Farm Lynels?
Lynel materials are:
- Required for several ★★★ and ★★★★ armor upgrades — including Barbarian Armor (most popular)
- Top-tier Fuse materials — a Silver Lynel Horn is among the highest base-damage Fuse attachments
- Dropped on every kill — consistent, guaranteed yield with no RNG on whether they drop
Lynel farming is the end-game activity for players maxing out combat armor sets.
Lynel Types
Lynels come in 5 tiers, which scale with game progression (specifically, how many Divine Beasts / temples you've cleared):
| Type | Color | HP | Threat Level | |------|-------|----|-------------| | Red Lynel | Red mane | 2,000 | Moderate | | Blue Lynel | Blue-gray | 3,000 | Hard | | White-Maned Lynel | White | 4,000 | Very Hard | | Silver Lynel | Silver/purple | 5,000 | Extreme | | Scaly Lynel (Gold) | Gold (Master Mode or special events) | 7,500 | Boss-tier |
Note: Regular game progression converts Red Lynels to Blue, then Blue to White-Maned, then to Silver as you complete more of the main story content. By late game, most Lynels in the world have converted to Silver.
Material Drops by Type
| Type | Horn | Hooves | Guts | |------|------|--------|------| | Red Lynel | Lynel Horn | Lynel Hooves | Lynel Guts | | Blue Lynel | Blue-Maned Lynel Horn | Blue-Maned Lynel Hooves | Blue-Maned Lynel Guts | | White-Maned | White-Maned Lynel Horn | White-Maned Lynel Hooves | White-Maned Lynel Guts | | Silver | Silver Lynel Horn | Silver Lynel Hooves | Silver Lynel Guts |
Higher tier = higher Fuse damage and higher armor upgrade value. Silver Lynel materials are the priority for late-game players.
All Lynel Locations
Central Hyrule
Oseira Plains Lynel (Floating Colosseum)
- Coordinates: Colosseum south of Hyrule Castle
- Type: Scales with progression (Silver in late game)
- Notes: The Floating Colosseum has 5 Lynels in sequence — the most concentrated Lynel farming location in the game. Each fight in the arena is separate. All 5 must be defeated to clear the colosseum.
Hyrule Field Lynel
- Coordinates: Open plains areas south of Hyrule Castle, near the Great Plateau remnants
- Type: Mid-tier (Blue/White-Maned)
- Notes: Patrols a large open area — relatively easy to spot from a distance
Eldin / Death Mountain Region
Eldin Canyon Lynel
- Coordinates: Ravine area east of Death Mountain, near Cephla Lake
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Patrols near the lava zones; fire resistance recommended
North Eldin Lynel
- Coordinates: Northern Eldin slopes above Goron City
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Fire-breath attack — the lava-adjacent terrain makes positioning critical
Akkala Lynel
- Coordinates: Akkala Highlands, east of the Citadel
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Open terrain — the highland location has good sight lines for pre-fight positioning
Lanayru / East Hyrule
Mount Lanayru Lynel
- Coordinates: High on Mount Lanayru, near the spring approaches
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Cold environment — cold resistance required. The high altitude limits mobility. Snow-covered terrain affects visibility.
Lanayru Wetlands Lynel
- Coordinates: Eastern wetlands area south of Zora's Domain approach
- Type: Blue → White-Maned
- Notes: Flat terrain, good for mount-jumping attacks
Faron / South Hyrule
Faron Lynel
- Coordinates: Faron Grasslands, south-central Hyrule near the rice paddies
- Type: Blue → White-Maned
- Notes: Open area — easy approach. Common for mid-game Lynel farming.
Necluda Sea Lynel
- Coordinates: Coastal area of East Necluda near the sea
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: The coastal terrain can cause issues — avoid getting pushed into water
Tabantha / West Hyrule
Tabantha Frontier Lynel
- Coordinates: Open plains in Tabantha Frontier, west of the Tabantha Snowfield
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Large open territory; Lynel patrols a wide area
Hebra Lynel
- Coordinates: Hebra Mountains, near the Rito-adjacent snow regions
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Extreme cold — bring Spicy Elixir or Snowquill Armor ★★+. Heavy snow limits arrow visibility.
Gerudo / Southwest
Gerudo Desert Lynel
- Coordinates: Gerudo Desert, in the open sand regions
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Heat resistance required for Gerudo Highlands approaches. The flat desert terrain is favorable for bow-and-arrow combat.
Gerudo Canyon Lynel
- Coordinates: Gerudo Canyon Pass, elevated ridge
- Type: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Canyon terrain limits escape routes — engage carefully
The Floating Colosseum — 5-Lynel Gauntlet
The Floating Colosseum is the premier Lynel farming location. It's an enclosed arena with 5 Lynel fights in sequence, located on a sky island south of Hyrule Castle.
Access: Reach the Floating Colosseum via sky island routes from Lookout Landing Skyview Tower, or via a chasm from the Colosseum ruins area near the Great Plateau.
Fight sequence:
- Red Lynel → Blue Lynel → White-Maned Lynel → Silver Lynel → Silver Lynel (final)
Each Lynel drops its full material set. Clearing all 5 yields:
- 5× Lynel Horns (mixed types)
- 5× Lynel Hooves (mixed types)
- 5× Lynel Guts (mixed types)
- Various Lynel weapons as drops
Colosseum strategy: The arena is enclosed, which prevents Lynels from retreating but also limits your escape options. Bring full stock of arrows, cooking supplies, and strong weapons before attempting.
Combat Strategy — General Lynel
Phase 1 — Opening Attack
Lynels charge immediately on engagement. Counter-options:
- Flurry Rush opportunity: Stand your ground, wait for the charge, dodge sideways at the last moment to trigger a flurry rush
- Mount approach: Shoot the Lynel in the face with an arrow → it staggers → sprint to its back and mount it → ride while attacking its back (free damage, no stamina cost, cannot be thrown off for ~5 seconds)
The Mount Loop (Primary DPS Method)
The most efficient Lynel farming technique:
- Shoot Lynel in the face with any arrow — Lynel staggers
- Immediately sprint and mount the Lynel
- Attack its back repeatedly until dismounted
- When dismounted, immediately fire another arrow at the face
- Repeat: mount → attack → arrow → mount
Each mount phase delivers 5–8 hits of free damage. This technique can kill a Silver Lynel in under 2 minutes with decent weapons.
Bow Usage
Lynels fire elemental arrows (fire, ice, shock depending on type). Pick up their dropped arrows for free elemental ammo. Equip a multi-fire bow (Great Eagle Bow or equivalent) for maximum arrow efficiency in the mount cycle.
Weapon Strategy
Use your strongest melee weapons on Lynel's back during mount phases — this is when you deal the most damage. Save your best weapons specifically for Lynel encounters and use weaker weapons everywhere else.
Efficient Farming Route
For maximum material yield per session:
Route: Floating Colosseum → Eldin Canyon Lynel → North Eldin Lynel → Akkala Lynel
- Start at Floating Colosseum (5 kills)
- Fast travel to Eldin region shrine → Eldin Canyon Lynel (1 kill)
- Fast travel north → North Eldin Lynel (1 kill)
- Fast travel to Akkala region → Akkala Lynel (1 kill)
- Total per session: 8 Lynel kills, 8 sets of materials
Blood Moon dependency: Lynels respawn on Blood Moon. If you complete this route and need more materials, trigger a Blood Moon (rest at a campfire until 11:30 PM → midnight → Blood Moon triggers) and repeat.
Armor Requiring Lynel Materials
| Armor Set | Material Required | Upgrade Tier | |-----------|-----------------|-------------| | Barbarian Armor (all) | Lynel Hooves | ★★ | | Barbarian Armor (all) | Lynel Guts | ★★★ | | Barbarian Armor (all) | Lynel Horn | ★★★★ | | Soldier's Armor (all) | Lynel Horn | ★★★★ | | Combat Boots | Lynel Hooves | ★★★ | | Combat Boots | Silver Lynel Hooves | ★★★★ |
Barbarian Armor is the primary Lynel material consumer. Fully upgrading all 3 Barbarian Armor pieces to ★★★★ requires approximately 9 Horns, 9 Hooves, and 9 Guts across the set — plan accordingly.
Quick Tips
- Silver Lynel horns are S-tier Fuse material — a Silver Lynel Horn on a two-handed weapon is one of the highest base damage options in the game
- Arrow to the face is the universal opener — works on all Lynel types, always triggers the stagger/mount opportunity
- Bring 20+ arrows per Lynel fight — you'll use more than you expect in extended mount cycles
- The Floating Colosseum respawns on Blood Moon — the 5-Lynel gauntlet is repeatable
- Lynel weapons are strong base weapons — Lynel Swords, Bows, and Shields are all high stat; pick them up from drops
