Sages & Companions Guide — All 5 Sage Abilities Explained
Sages & Companions Guide — All Five Sage Abilities
After completing each of TotK's four main dungeons and the Spirit Temple, Link is accompanied by five sage companions who follow him throughout Hyrule. Each sage can be summoned to use a unique ability that dramatically expands Link's toolkit.
How Companions Work
Companions appear as floating spirit avatars near Link. To use their ability:
- Move toward the companion — they glow when you approach
- Press A when prompted — triggers the ability instantly
- Each ability has a cooldown before it can be used again
You can also dismiss companions temporarily by opening the system menu and toggling which sages are active. Keeping all five active crowds the screen; many players dismiss all but the most useful one for each situation.
Tulin — Sage of Wind
Temple required: Wind Temple (Rito Village questline) Ability: Gust — releases a powerful burst of wind in Link's current direction
How to Use Tulin's Gust
- Approach Tulin and press A while airborne or on the ground
- While paragliding: Gust extends flight significantly, pushing Link forward and upward
- On the ground: Gust launches projectiles, blows enemies off ledges, and moves Zonai devices
Best Uses for Tulin
Climbing and traversal: Tulin's gust while paragliding is the single most powerful traversal tool in the game. Every 2-3 seconds you can trigger another gust, making previously unreachable sky islands accessible. Always keep Tulin active during exploration.
Combat: Gust blows lightweight enemies off platforms and cliffs for instant kills. Works well against Bokoblin archer camps on elevated terrain.
Zonai devices: Gust activates Fans (triggering their airflow without needing to attach them) and can push Balls through Shrine puzzles.
Cooldown reduction tip: The cooldown resets the moment the wind effect ends. Short bursts used frequently are more efficient than single maximum-distance gusts.
Sidon — Sage of Water
Temple required: Water Temple (Zora's Domain questline) Ability: Water Shield — creates a water bubble around Link that absorbs one hit
How to Use Sidon's Water Shield
- Approach Sidon and press A to activate the shield
- The water bubble surrounds Link and blocks the next incoming hit completely
- After absorbing a hit or after a set duration, the bubble pops
Best Uses for Sidon
Boss fights: The Water Shield provides a free tank of one hit from any boss attack. In phases where bosses deal massive damage, popping a Water Shield before a dangerous attack is essential.
Bomb Arrow boosting: A hidden interaction — activating the Water Shield then releasing a Bomb Arrow while inside the bubble amplifies the explosion radius. Useful against groups of enemies.
Lynel encounters: Against Lynels, the Water Shield absorbs one of the devastating charge attacks that would otherwise two-shot Link. Buy yourself recovery time.
Fire and Gloom environments: In areas with environmental hazards, the Water Shield can absorb one source of fire damage or environmental hit.
Riju — Sage of Lightning
Temple required: Lightning Temple (Gerudo questline) Ability: Lightning Strike — calls down a lightning bolt at Link's target location
How to Use Riju's Lightning Strike
- Aim your bow (hold ZR) to slow time
- Approach Riju during slow-motion aim
- Press A to charge her ability, then release an arrow into a marked target zone
- Lightning strikes where the arrow hits, dealing massive shock damage in an area
Best Uses for Riju
Metal-armored enemies: Lightning Strike destroys Silver Bokoblin shields and stuns all metal-carrying enemies in the area. The most efficient crowd-control tool in the game.
Boss weak points: Multiple bosses have periods where they cluster — dropping a Lightning Strike in the center of the group deals full damage to every target.
Storm environments: In thunderstorm weather, Riju's lightning ignores her usual targeting requirements — she fires automatically at nearby metal objects. Use this for free damage in Gerudo Desert storms.
Resource note: Riju's ability uses no arrows if you fire the activating shot into an enemy directly. Each strike costs one arrow, but the damage-to-arrow ratio is exceptional.
Yunobo — Sage of Fire
Temple required: Fire Temple (Death Mountain questline) Ability: Charge — Yunobo becomes a flaming boulder, rolling forward to smash obstacles and enemies
How to Use Yunobo's Charge
- Approach Yunobo and press A to launch him
- Aim with the camera before pressing — he rolls in the direction Link faces
- Can be launched upward using directional movement during activation
- After rolling, Yunobo returns automatically
Best Uses for Yunobo
Ore deposits and cracked walls: Yunobo's rolling charge destroys ore deposits and cracked dungeon walls that normally require a Hammer or high-damage weapon. Never waste weapon durability on mining — use Yunobo.
Rock Octorok traps: Yunobo's charge breaks Octorok shells and destroys their hiding spots before they can reset.
Marbled Talus: The glowing ore deposit on Talus bosses can be hit by Yunobo's charge, dealing significant chunk damage without expending weapons.
Stacking fire: During the Death Mountain region specifically, Yunobo's fire aura adds to fire-element bonuses. In Flame Temple puzzles (during the dungeon), Yunobo activates specific fire-switch mechanisms.
Mineru — Sage of Spirit
Temple required: Spirit Temple (Thunderhead Isles questline) Ability: Summon Construct — Mineru possesses a Phantom Construct that Link can pilot and equip with Zonai devices
How to Use Mineru's Construct
- Approach Mineru and press A to summon the Construct
- You climb inside the Construct and pilot it from inside
- The Construct is a large mechanical body with arm slots on both sides
- Attach Zonai devices to the arm slots to give the Construct weapons and tools
Equipping the Construct
| Attachment | Effect | |------------|--------| | Swords/Spears | Melee attacks with the Construct's arms | | Rockets | Vertical thrust for aerial movement | | Fans | Forward thrust for faster traversal | | Cannons | Ranged projectile attacks | | Flame Emitters | Fire breath attacks |
The Construct cannot perform normal Link actions (climbing, swimming, paragliding) but provides:
- Complete immunity to environmental damage (heat, cold, electricity)
- High HP pool separate from Link's hearts
- Enormous physical attack power with the right attachments
Best Uses for Mineru
Akkala Citadel Ruins area: The Construct handles extreme environments that would kill Link quickly. Use it when exploring dangerous Depths regions.
Silver enemy farming: Attach two strong spears to the Construct's arms and it will one-shot most Silver Bokoblins and Moblins through pure physical force.
Lightroot exploration: The Depths have no light — the Construct can activate Brightbloom Seed launchers or have Lights attached to navigate freely.
Spirit Temple puzzles: Several puzzles in the Spirit Temple are designed specifically for the Construct — Mineru's presence is required to solve them.
Sage Activation Efficiency Tips
Keep only relevant sages active: With five companions orbiting you, the screen becomes cluttered. Go to the menu and deactivate companions you won't use in the current context:
- Exploring: Keep Tulin active only
- Combat: Keep Riju and Sidon
- Dungeon exploring: Keep the dungeon's relevant sage
Double-tap approach: You can pre-position yourself near a sage and press A the moment you need the ability, making combat feel more responsive than the orbital activation suggests.
Cooldown stacking: All five sage cooldowns are independent. In a difficult fight, you can chain Water Shield → Lightning Strike → Gust → Charge in rapid succession before any individual cooldown expires.
Sage Ability Upgrades
Sage abilities cannot be upgraded directly, but your Sage's Will items (found in Shrines of Light and purchased from Bargainer Statues) power up sage abilities when a sufficient number is collected.
Each sage's vow strengthen their ability effects:
- Tulin's Gust becomes more powerful and covers greater distance
- Sidon's Water Shield lasts longer and absorbs additional hits
- Riju's Lightning Strike increases in area and damage
- Yunobo's Charge gains speed and explosion radius
Collect as many Sage's Wills as possible — they're found in most Shrines of Light as secondary rewards.
The Final Fight — All Sages Together
The climax of TotK's final battle requires activating all five sage abilities against Ganondorf's phantom army. This is the game's intended payoff for having recruited and empowered all five companions. Each sage's ability hits different phantom copies, making the ability to rapid-fire all five abilities essential.
Practice your sage activation order before entering the final boss sequence.
