Overview

The Sages are Link's five divine companions in Tears of the Kingdom, each representing an element and a sacred vow made to the ancient king Rauru. Unlike the Champions of Breath of the Wild, the Sages in TotK actively fight alongside Link rather than providing passive abilities from Divine Beasts. Each Sage is unlocked by completing a specific Temple and activating a Vow by touching a unique Sage's Medallion. This guide covers all five Sages, their backstory, abilities, and upgrade path.

The Five Sages

Tulin — Sage of Wind

Race: Rito Temple: Wind Temple (Hebra region, sky island) Ability: Tulin's Gust — fires a wind burst that propels Link forward and extends glide distance

Tulin is the son of Teba, a warrior from BotW. He is enthusiastic, brave, and eager to prove himself. His wind ability is the most movement-focused of all sages, enabling Link to cross vast distances and ascend wind columns more effectively.

Best Use: Exploration, crossing large gaps, sky island traversal

Riju — Sage of Lightning

Race: Gerudo Temple: Lightning Temple (Gerudo Desert) Ability: Riju's Lightning — creates a lightning aura; arrows fired during the aura trigger immediate thunder strikes

Riju is the chief of the Gerudo, continuing her leadership from Age of Calamity lore. She is confident and strategic. Her lightning ability is the highest-damage sage power for bow-users.

Best Use: Combat, wet-environment enemies, armored foes, crowd control

Sidon — Sage of Water

Race: Zora Temple: Water Temple (above Zora's Domain, sky island) Ability: Sidon's Blessing — creates a water barrier that absorbs hits and detonates as a water explosion

Sidon returns from BotW as Zora's Domain's beloved prince-turned-king. His calm confidence complements his defensive ability perfectly.

Best Use: Defense, fire enemy counters, timed burst damage windows

Yunobo — Sage of Fire

Race: Goron Temple: Fire Temple (Death Mountain Depths) Ability: Yunobo's Charge — launches Yunobo as a rolling fireball at a targeted direction

Yunobo is the descendant of Daruk from BotW, though in TotK he has unfortunately been influenced by Marbled Gohma's manipulation. After the Fire Temple, he returns to his true cheerful self.

Best Use: Mining ore, breaking Talus weakpoints, fire damage, cave combat

Mineru — Sage of Spirit

Race: Zonai (ancient) Temple: Spirit Temple (Depths, final temple) Ability: Construct Piloting — Link pilots Mineru's giant Zonai Construct mech directly

Mineru is Rauru's sister and one of the original ancient Zonai who came to Hyrule. She speaks through her spirit stored in the Construct. Unlike other sages, she does not follow Link — she is summoned as a rideable vehicle.

Best Use: Heavy combat, mining, dangerous enemy clearing, Depths exploration

Sage Medallion Vows

Each Sage provides Link with a Vow by offering their medallion. This is the moment of narrative commitment that grants the sage ability. The vows cannot be revoked — once given, the sage accompanies Link permanently.

| Sage | Medallion Color | Temple | |------|----------------|--------| | Tulin | Teal | Wind Temple | | Riju | Yellow | Lightning Temple | | Sidon | Blue | Water Temple | | Yunobo | Red/Orange | Fire Temple | | Mineru | Purple | Spirit Temple |

Upgrading Sage Abilities

Sage's Wills are crystal items found in temples, as treasure chest rewards, and in specific exploration areas. Bringing Sage's Wills to the Dragon's Tears memory sites or Goddess Statues allows upgrading each sage's ability.

Each sage can be upgraded twice for meaningful improvements:

  • Longer ability duration
  • Increased damage per activation
  • Reduced cooldown

Prioritize upgrading the sage you use most frequently.

Tips

  • Only one sage ability can be "active" at a time — tap the ability button to switch the active sage
  • Sage spirits hover nearby and will independently perform minor attacks even when their ability is on cooldown
  • Mineru's construct cannot follow Link through small caves or up Ascend paths — plan accordingly
  • For the final boss, having all four human sages fully upgraded provides significant damage output during the Demon Dragon fight
  • The Sage's Wills drop from certain treasure chests that look identical to others — use the Sensor to detect nearby chests
