Sapphire Farming Guide

Sapphires are valuable blue gems used for armor upgrades and sold for high Rupee values. Each Sapphire sells for 260 Rupees, making them one of the better gem-to-rupee conversions in TotK. They're used in several armor upgrades including the Zora Set, Snowquill Set, and Rubber Armor. This guide covers the fastest farming methods.

What Sapphires Are Used For

| Use | Amount Required | |-----|----------------| | Rubber Armor upgrade (2★) | 3× Sapphire | | Snowquill Set upgrade (3★) | 2× Sapphire per piece | | Zora Armor upgrade (3★) | 2× Sapphire | | Sell at shops | 260 Rupees each | | Fuse to weapons | +ice damage (cosmetic) |

Sapphires have an ice elemental property when fused — combining them with a sword adds a blue glow and slight ice damage, though this is largely cosmetic for most enemies.

Method 1 — Ore Node Mining

Ore nodes (gray-blue sparkling rocks) have a chance to drop Sapphires. The drop rate is not guaranteed but is higher in cold-region nodes.

Best ore node clusters:

  • Hebra Mountains — The frozen north has dense ore node fields. Look on cliff faces between Rito Village and Hebra Peak. Coordinates near (-2800, 2440, 530).
  • Lanayru Mountain — Eastern slopes above Zora's Domain have clustered ore nodes with high gem drop rates.
  • Akkala Highlands — North Akkala has ore on rocky outcroppings above the sea cliff.
  • Death Mountain (Eldin) — Hot region ore nodes sometimes drop Sapphires despite the biome mismatch.

How to mine efficiently:

  1. Equip a hammer-type weapon (Iron Sledgehammer, Cobble Crusher) for max hits per node
  2. Use a bomb-fused weapon to chain-hit clusters of nodes simultaneously
  3. Collect all drops before moving on — small ore pieces blend into terrain

Method 2 — Stone Talus Farming

Stone Talus (all variants) drop gems on death, including Sapphires. Higher-tier Talus drop gems more reliably.

| Talus Tier | Sapphire Drop Rate | |-----------|-------------------| | Stone Talus | ~10% | | Igneo Talus | ~15% | | Frost Talus | ~25% (best for Sapphires) | | Battle Talus | ~20% |

Frost Talus locations (highest Sapphire yield):

  • Hebra Mountains — multiple Frost Talus spawn on the mountain plateaus
  • Near Coldsnap Hollow (north Hebra) — two spawn within 300 meters of each other
  • Gerudo Highlands snowfields — southwest of the Hebra/Gerudo border

Farm loop: Kill Frost Talus → rest at nearby campfire (or wait for Blood Moon) → repeat. Three Frost Talus per loop yields 0-3 Sapphires on average.

Method 3 — Blood Moon Respawn Cycle

All ore nodes and Talus respawn on Blood Moon. Blood Moons occur every 7 real-time gameplay hours or can be triggered at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab.

Optimal route for Sapphire farming:

  1. Start at Rito Village — clear all ore nodes on the approach to Hebra Peak
  2. Defeat 2-3 Frost Talus in the Hebra snowfields
  3. Return to Rito Village → rest repeatedly until Blood Moon triggers
  4. Repeat

This loop yields 6-12 Sapphires per full Blood Moon cycle depending on RNG.

Method 4 — Ore Rocks in the Depths

The Depths has purple ore nodes (Poe-influenced) that drop gems at significantly higher rates than surface nodes. Look near any Lightroot — the area around Lightroots often has rock clusters.

Best Depths sapphire areas:

  • Under Zora's Domain (Lanayru Depths) — high gem concentration
  • Under Hebra Mountains (Hebra Depths) — sapphire-biased drops
  • Near Minetak Lightroot in central-east Depths

Bring plenty of Brightbloom Seeds or the Miner's Set (glows in Depths) — ore nodes are invisible in the dark.

Method 5 — Treasure Chests

Several fixed treasure chests contain Sapphires:

  • Zora's Domain — in the reservoir area east of the throne room
  • Lanayru Great Spring Sky Islands — chest on the floating island chain east of Mount Lanayru
  • Hyrule Castle — eastern wing treasure room (multiple gem chests)
  • Sky Islands above Akkala — chest platforms require sky diving precision

These are one-time sources but guaranteed. Collect them before farming respawnable nodes.

Rupee Value Comparison

| Gem | Sell Price | Notes | |-----|-----------|-------| | Amber | 10 Rupees | Low value, sell in bulk | | Opal | 60 Rupees | Common gem | | Topaz | 180 Rupees | Good sell value | | Sapphire | 260 Rupees | High value | | Ruby | 210 Rupees | Mid-high value | | Diamond | 500 Rupees | Keep for upgrades first |

Sapphires are among the best gems to sell when you don't need them for upgrades. With Beedle's merchant at any stable, you can sell directly without traveling to a shop.

Tips

  • Carry a Rock Hammer fused weapon — the Cobble Crusher (sold at Goron City) has the highest ore-breaking damage and lasts longer than improvised fuse combos.
  • Don't sell Sapphires immediately — check your Great Fairy upgrade queue first. Snowquill and Zora Sets both need Sapphires at 3★.
  • Ore nodes in caves often have higher gem rates than open-world nodes. Named caves on Death Mountain and Lanayru are worth exploring specifically for gem ore.
  • The blood moon manipulation method (sleep repeatedly at the Akkala Tech Lab fire) gives you full control over the respawn timer without waiting in real time.
