Makasura Shrine — An Upright Device (Fan Puzzle)

Location: Central Hyrule, west of Lookout Landing Coordinates: -0987, -0106, 0042 Abilities Required: Ultrahand Type: Zonai Device Shrine — Fan mechanics Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Makasura Shrine is a dedicated Zonai Fan tutorial shrine — it teaches the horizontal and vertical movement properties of the Fan device in two distinct puzzle segments. Understanding Fan physics here directly translates to building hoverbikes, sail boats, aircraft, and wind-launched catapults in the open world. This shrine is one of the most practically valuable tutorials in the game. Master fan direction, fan placement balance, and multi-fan acceleration here.

Location Details

The shrine is in western Central Hyrule, accessible from Lookout Landing by heading west along the main road toward the Hyrule Ridge border. From Lookout Landing, walk west approximately 800 meters. The shrine is visible from the road as an orange glow near a rocky outcrop. From the Rito Village road (coming from the northwest), it's a natural stopping point heading toward Central Hyrule.

Preparation

  • Ultrahand required (the only ability needed)
  • No combat — any armor is fine
  • Early-game accessible — no special upgrades required

Detailed Walkthrough

Segment 1 — Horizontal Fan Platform

Goal: Cross a floor-level gap using a fan-propelled platform.

  1. The first room has a rectangular wooden platform on the floor and a Zonai Fan nearby.
  2. Use Ultrahand to grab the Fan and attach it to the rear face of the platform. "Rear" means the face pointing away from the direction you want to travel — the fan blows from behind, pushing the platform forward.
  3. Center placement is critical: If the Fan is off-center to the left or right, the platform will curve or spin in circles rather than travel straight. Attach it symmetrically on the centerline.
  4. Set the assembled vehicle on the floor at the edge of the gap (the wide channel the platform must cross).
  5. Activate the Fan by striking it once with any weapon. The fan spins and begins pushing the platform forward.
  6. Quickly jump onto the platform as it moves. Ride it across the gap.
  7. Step off on the far bank. The platform will continue until the fan's battery depletes.

Segment 2 — Vertical Fan Lift

Goal: Reach an elevated altar area using the Fan as a vertical lift.

  1. In the second area, a tall stone wall blocks horizontal progress. The altar is above the wall.
  2. A second Fan is available. Use Ultrahand to grab it.
  3. Rotate the Fan 90 degrees so it points downward rather than horizontally. A downward-facing Fan generates upward thrust (pushes the platform up when activated).
  4. Attach the downward-facing Fan to the bottom center of the platform from Segment 1 (either retrieve the platform or use a new one provided).
  5. Set the platform directly below the wall's overhang. Stand on it.
  6. Activate the Fan — the platform lifts vertically. Ride it upward past the wall's height.
  7. When at the correct elevation, jump off the platform onto the altar's ledge.

Chest Access

Before activating the vertical lift: look for a side alcove at the base of the tall wall — sometimes accessible via Ascend or by pushing a loose block. A treasure chest is inside. Common contents: a Zonai Fan (to keep for overworld building), a weapon, or materials.

Altar Chamber

Walk across the elevated platform to Rauru's statue. Interact for your Light of Blessing.

Fan Physics Summary

| Fan Orientation | Result | |-----------------|--------| | Attached to rear (horizontal) | Platform moves forward | | Centered | Straight movement | | Off-center | Curved or spinning movement | | Attached to bottom (vertical, facing down) | Platform lifts up | | Two fans (rear) | Double the thrust, higher speed | | Two fans (bottom) | Faster vertical lift, more stable |

Tips

  • Center alignment always: Every time you attach a Fan, check the attachment point is centered on the face. Use Ultrahand's rotation (right stick) to fine-tune before placing.
  • Activation method: Any damage contact activates a Zonai Fan — sword, arrow, falling rock, or any force contact. You don't need a specific prompt.
  • Battery awareness: Each Fan runs on a timer. In this shrine the timers are generous. In the overworld, attach more Zonai charges or a larger battery for extended operation.
  • Hoverbike preview: Two Fans attached side-by-side to a flat board (horizontal fans), with a Steering Stick in front, creates the famous hoverbike. Makasura teaches the individual fan behavior; the hoverbike combines them. Experiment in the shrine's open room after clearing the puzzle.
  • Fan direction memory: Fans push objects in the direction the fan blades face outward. If the blades face down, they push up. If they face backward, they push forward. Visualize the blade's "exhaust" direction before placing.
