Maoikes Shrine — Laser Deflection Puzzle

Overview

Maoikes Shrine uses laser sensor beams and movable metal blocks. You must position blocks to interrupt laser beams and trigger doors. The puzzle escalates across three rooms, each requiring more precise block placement than the last. Laser beams deal damage on contact — stay out of the beam path while solving each puzzle.

Walkthrough

Step 1: First Laser Gate

Enter to find a single horizontal laser beam crossing the path at chest height. A metal block sits to the left of the beam emitter. Use Ultrahand to grab the block and slide it directly into the beam path — position it between the emitter and the receiver on the far wall. The laser cuts off and the first door opens.

Damage warning: The laser deals half a heart per second. Do not stand in it while maneuvering the block.

Step 2: Two-Beam Room

The second room has two laser beams crossing at different heights. One runs horizontally near the floor; the other runs diagonally across the room. A single larger block is available. Use Ultrahand to rotate and position the block so it blocks both beams simultaneously — the key is finding the angle where the block's face intercepts both beam paths. Tilt the block roughly 30 degrees to accomplish this. Both doors open when both beams are blocked.

Step 3: Optional Hidden Chest

A side alcove behind the second room's right wall contains a third laser beam pointing at a lock. Block this beam using the small block already in the alcove to unlock a Treasure Chest containing a Captain's Bow. This chest is entirely optional but worth the brief detour.

Step 4: Final Door

The last room has a single beam at an awkward downward angle. The block here must be positioned on an elevated stone ledge to intercept the downward beam. Use Ultrahand to lift the block onto the ledge, then adjust its angle to align with the beam. Once blocked, the final door opens.

Step 5: Collect the Light of Blessing

Navigate through the final gate to Rauru's altar and receive your Light of Blessing.

• Ultrahand — required to move and rotate all blocks

Hidden Chest

Captain's Bow — side alcove in the second room, unlocked by blocking the third laser beam.

Tips

• Rotate blocks with the right analog stick while Ultrahand is active — precise rotation is the key skill here
• Larger blocks can intercept multiple beams at once if positioned at the right angle
• If a block falls into a laser beam and you cannot retrieve it, leave and re-enter the shrine to reset all objects
• Stand back from beam emitters — the emitter end of the laser also damages you if you are too close
• Laser beams are always in straight lines — use the floor or wall as a visual reference to align your block perfectly
• The hidden chest in Step 3 is easy to miss — check the right-side wall behind the second room before proceeding to the final door

Preparation

• Ultrahand proficiency is all you need — no weapons, armor, or specialist gear required inside
• The Akkala exterior has Bokoblins, Lizalfos, and mid-game enemies — bring combat gear for the approach
• No temperature gear inside — Akkala region surface is temperate year-round
• Full hearts help with accidental laser contact but the damage rate is manageable

Location Details

Maoikes Shrine is located in southeastern Akkala near the coastline — one of the more remote Akkala shrines, but accessible from Akkala Stable heading east. The shrine's coastal position provides a scenic ocean view from the entrance. The Akkala Citadel is visible to the northwest.

• From Akkala Skyview Tower: paraglide southeast; the coastal terrain is largely flat for easy navigation
