Oshozan-u Shrine — Proving Grounds: Stakes

Location: Faron, southeast Hyrule Ability Required: Ultrahand Difficulty: Medium — stakes driving and rebound puzzle

Overview

Oshozan-u Shrine is a stakes puzzle — you'll drive large wooden stakes into specific positions to activate mechanisms and create stepping stones. The stakes interact with the environment in specific ways: driving them into cracked floors reveals passages, and hammered stakes in soft ground hold platforms in position.

Preparation

  • No combat
  • No special gear
  • Takes 6–10 minutes

Walkthrough

Room 1 — Drive the Stake

  1. A large wooden stake and a heavy hammer are available. A cracked section of floor is visible.
  2. Use Ultrahand to pick up the stake and position it over the cracked floor.
  3. Pick up the hammer with Ultrahand and strike the stake from above — drive it into the cracked floor.
  4. The floor section breaks and opens a passage downward.

Room 2 — Platform Pin

  1. A rising platform needs to be held at a specific height while you step from it to the upper ledge.
  2. The platform rises when weight is applied to a nearby pressure plate, but sinks as soon as you step off the plate to board the platform.
  3. Drive a stake through the platform into the floor slot beside it — the stake pins the platform at its current height.
  4. Step on the pressure plate (platform rises), then immediately use Ultrahand to drive the stake through the platform's hole into the floor slot. Board the pinned platform and jump to the ledge.

Room 3 — Multi-Stake Maze

  1. Three cracked floor tiles, each revealing a different tunnel: one leads to the altar, two lead to dead ends.
  2. Check the symbol above each cracked tile — the altar tunnel has a distinctive marking.
  3. Drive the stake into the marked tile and descend.

Tips

  • Hammer strike force: You need to strike the stake firmly — a light tap doesn't drive it in. Use Ultrahand to raise the hammer to full height before swinging it down.
  • Stake as anchor: In Room 2, the stake through the platform hole is a precise placement. Lower the stake slowly and align it with the floor slot — it will "snap" into the correct position.
  • Room 3 symbol identification: The altar symbol is a circle with a downward arrow. The dead-end tiles have X marks. Learn the symbols before driving stakes.
  • Platform timing in Room 2: You have about 3 seconds after activating the pressure plate before the platform starts to drop. The stake must be placed in that window. Position the stake above the platform slot before stepping on the plate.
  • Chest in Room 1: After driving the stake through the first floor section, check the side walls — a second stake location creates a side passage to a chest.
