Otutsum Shrine
Otutsum Shrine — The Gerudo Wind Crossing
Location: Gerudo Highlands, east of the Snowfield Coordinates: (-3012, -1498, 0467) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium
Overview
Otutsum Shrine is set in the dramatic Gerudo Highlands, where fierce winds sweep across elevated rocky terrain. The shrine uses sail mechanics and Zonai fans to harness these winds — Link must construct and steer wind-powered vehicles across wide gaps and through narrow corridors. The engineering challenge is creative: sails catch wind differently depending on their angle and surface area, and players must balance speed with control. Unlike fan-only shrines where power is constant, Otutsum's wind varies in direction, requiring adaptive repositioning during transit. It stands out as one of the more dynamic movement-based shrines in the Gerudo region.
Preparation
- Ultrahand skill for attaching sails and adjusting their angles mid-construction
- Zonai Fan devices are provided inside — no need to bring your own
- Wear fall-resistant armor (Glide Set or any armor with high defense) — wind gusts can knock Link off platforms
- The Gerudo Highlands are cold at altitude — equip Snowquill Set or cook Spicy Elixirs for the exterior approach
- Stamina is important for this shrine — cook Enduring Elixirs or stamina-boosting meals before entering
Walkthrough
Step 1: Basic Sail Construction
The first room has a wheeled cart and two rectangular sail panels leaning against the wall. Attach both sails to the cart vertically using Ultrahand, positioning them to catch the wind blowing from the north. The cart begins moving south when both sails are positioned correctly. Steer by detaching and reattaching sails at different angles to change direction — or use a Zonai Fan to supplement wind power when the natural breeze dies down.
Step 2: Narrow Corridor Navigation
The second room is a corridor with 2-meter-wide walls. Your sail vehicle must fit through without the sails catching the walls. Collapse the sails to a single panel (remove one with Ultrahand) before entering, then re-expand after the corridor. Alternatively, angle the remaining sail parallel to the direction of travel — the narrow profile passes through without contact. The wind in this corridor blows east, so angling east maintains momentum.
Step 3: Gap Crossing with Gusting Wind
A 15-meter gap separates two platforms. The natural wind blows across the gap from the west but gusts unpredictably, occasionally shifting south. Build a three-sail configuration (all panels available from a wall dispenser) to maximize wind capture — the wide surface area smooths out directional variance. Time your crossing between gust cycles: launch during a steady westerly and you'll cross without deviation. If the gust hits mid-crossing, use a Zonai Fan to compensate.
Step 4: The Final Descent
The final section requires descending from a high platform to the altar level — but the wind blows upward, and any sail vehicle will be lifted rather than lowered. Remove the sails from the vehicle and use it as a plain wheeled cart, rolling down the ramp under gravity alone. Alternatively, use the paraglider to descend directly, bypassing the cart entirely. Both approaches reach the altar level.
Step 5: Altar
The altar sits at the base of the Highlands cliff. Collect your Light of Blessing. The adjacent chest contains Zonai Fan capsules — two fans ready to deploy, useful for future Zonai construction projects.
Tips
- Sails catch wind proportionally to their surface area — three panels provide 50% more thrust than two
- In Step 2, a single angled panel fits the corridor without wall contact — the simplest valid solution
- Gust cycles in Step 3 last approximately 8 seconds of steady wind followed by 3 seconds of turbulence — observe before committing to the crossing
- A Zonai Fan attached to the rear of any vehicle serves as an emergency thrust source when natural wind fails
- The Gerudo Highlands wind is stronger at higher elevation — ride the updrafts for extra altitude before crossing gaps
Nearby Points of Interest
- Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower — west of the shrine, essential for regional map activation
- Snowfield Stable — north, provides accommodation and access to the Eldin/Lanayru boundary
- Gerudo Town — south, full services including armor shops and cooking facilities
- Phantom Ganon Camp — near the Highlands, a high-level enemy encounter with valuable drops
