Silokaw Shrine — A Sliding Device

Location: Lanayru region, east of Zora's Domain Coordinates: (3812, 0482, 0148) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Silokaw Shrine is a gear rotation and mechanism puzzle in the Lanayru region — the water-rich zone surrounding Zora's Domain. The shrine uses interlocking stone gear systems: large rotating discs and wheels that transfer motion through contact, where turning one gear turns adjacent gears, and the resulting motions open or close gate mechanisms. The Zora architectural style carries into this shrine's design — smooth stone, carved channels, and the elegant engineering that defines Zora craftsmanship. Understanding how gears transfer rotation direction is the key conceptual challenge.

Preparation

  • Ultrahand for rotating gears and adjusting mechanism positions
  • No combat gear required — entirely mechanical puzzle
  • No temperature gear — Lanayru region is temperate
  • Patience and observation: watch each gear system complete one cycle before adjusting
  • Full hearts for the Lanayru exterior approach through Lizalfos-patrolled waterways

Walkthrough

Step 1: Basic Gear Transfer

The first room has a large gear (A) connected to a smaller gear (B) by direct tooth contact. Turning Gear A clockwise turns Gear B counter-clockwise. A gate is attached to Gear B's shaft — it opens when Gear B rotates counter-clockwise. Use Ultrahand to grab Gear A's rim and rotate it clockwise. Gear B spins counter-clockwise, gate opens.

Step 2: Three-Gear Chain

The second room has three gears in a line: A connects to B, B connects to C. A gate is attached to Gear C. The chain means: rotating A clockwise turns B counter-clockwise, which turns C clockwise. The gate opens only when C rotates counter-clockwise — meaning A must rotate counter-clockwise. Use Ultrahand to rotate Gear A counter-clockwise. The chain propagates and Gear C opens the gate.

Step 3: Gear Repositioning

The third room has Gear B detached and lying on the floor — the chain is broken. The gate requires Gear C to turn, but no motion is reaching it. Pick up Gear B with Ultrahand and position it between Gears A and C, re-meshing the tooth contact on both sides. Once B is correctly positioned in the gap, rotate Gear A — the full chain propagates again. Gate opens.

Step 4: Vertical Gear Lift

The final puzzle uses a vertical gear acting as a winch — rotating it lifts a heavy platform connected by chain. The platform blocks the altar door when lowered; raised, it reveals the passage. Use Ultrahand to rotate the vertical gear's face clockwise — the chain winds, the platform lifts, the door is accessible.

Step 5: Altar

Through the revealed passage is the altar. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest nearby contains Zora Spear — a weapon that deals bonus damage in rain conditions.

Tips

  • Adjacent gears always rotate in opposite directions — clockwise → counter-clockwise → clockwise through a chain
  • Count the gears in a chain: odd number of gears = same direction at start and end; even number = opposite direction
  • Gear repositioning in Step 3: tooth contact must be flush on both sides — slight misalignment prevents motion transfer
  • The vertical winch gear in Step 4 holds position when Ultrahand is released — the chain locks the platform in place
  • Gear puzzles appear in overworld Zonai structures — Silokaw's lessons apply directly to those encounters
