Sidon's Water Ability Guide — How to Use Sidon of the Zora in TotK
Overview
Sidon of the Zora is the Sage of Water in Tears of the Kingdom, joining Link after clearing the Water Temple above Zora's Domain. His ability grants Link a temporary water bubble shield that blocks incoming attacks, stores charge energy on each block, and then releases a powerful water surge when detonated. Sidon is one of the most defensively useful sages and also strong for burst damage windows.
How Sidon's Ability Works
Activating Sidon's ability coats Link in a shimmering water barrier. This barrier:
- Absorbs the next incoming attack (melee or projectile) without dealing damage to Link
- Each absorbed hit charges the barrier further
- Pressing the ability button again — or the barrier reaching full charge — releases a water explosion dealing area damage around Link
- Duration: The barrier lasts until detonated or approximately 20 seconds
- Cooldown: ~12 seconds after detonation
- Damage type: Water — highly effective against fire enemies and Gibdo mummies
Combat Applications
Defensive Parry Replacement
Sidon's shield is a lower-skill alternative to a Perfect Parry. If you struggle with parry timing, activating Sidon before engaging a powerful enemy lets you absorb one hit consequence-free. The water detonation after absorbing punishes the attacker immediately.
Fire Enemy Counter
Fire Keese, Fire Lizalfos, Flame Gleeoks, and the Igneo Talus all take bonus damage from water-type hits. Detonate Sidon's barrier at close range against any fire enemy for massive burst damage. This is particularly effective during the Mucktorok boss fight in the Water Temple, where Sidon's water clears sludge obstacles.
Charged Detonation Farming
Against large groups, absorb two or three incoming arrows from distant Bokoblins to fully charge the barrier, then rush into melee range and detonate. The full-charge explosion has a large radius and staggers all nearby enemies simultaneously.
Water Temple Relevance
During the Water Temple, Sidon's water ability is the primary mechanic for clearing mud/sludge that blocks progress. He forms a temporary water sphere around Link that can be hurled at sludge nodes. This utility makes him one of the most plot-integrated sages.
Upgrade Benefits
| Upgrade Level | Effect | |--------------|--------| | Base | Single-hit barrier, moderate detonation | | Upgraded | Barrier absorbs multiple hits; detonation radius increased | | Max | Detonation deals significantly higher water damage |
Tips
- Sidon's barrier disappears if Link enters water or begins swimming — activate it just before combat, not while crossing rivers
- The water explosion can extinguish fires — useful for accessing treasure chests on burning platforms
- Against the Queen Gibdo boss, combining Sidon's water detonation with Riju's lightning creates powerful combo damage
- Sidon's spirit occasionally throws water projectiles independently — these also deal water damage and can stagger enemies even while the main ability is cooling down
- Use Sidon's barrier just before a Gleeok's breath attack to absorb one element-type hit without taking damage

Sidon vs. Other Sage Abilities — Comparison
| Sage | Ability Type | Best Use | Cooldown | |------|-------------|----------|----------| | Sidon | Defensive barrier → detonation | Absorb hits, punish fire enemies | ~12 sec | | Riju | Lightning strike area | Metalshield enemies, Lynel stagger | ~15 sec | | Tulin | Wind gust boost | Traversal, wind platform puzzles | ~8 sec | | Yunobo | Rolling fire boulder | Wall/armor breaking, Igneo Talus | ~10 sec | | Mineru | Construct vehicle | Combat platform, Depths navigation | Stamina-based |
Sidon is the most defensively oriented of the five sages. While Riju provides the most raw burst damage and Tulin the best traversal utility, Sidon provides the unique ability to absorb incoming damage — making him the strongest choice for sustained fights where you expect to take hits.
Barrier Charge Mechanics — Detail
Sidon's barrier doesn't just block — it accumulates energy based on what hits it:
- Arrow hits: Low charge per hit — takes 3-4 to reach full detonation
- Melee hits: Medium charge — 2-3 hits depending on enemy
- Special attacks (Gleeok breath, Lynel roar): High charge — sometimes one hit fully charges the barrier
This means Sidon is most effective against enemies that deliver powerful but predictable single hits (Lynels, Gleeoks) rather than rapid multi-hit attacks. Against rapid attackers, the barrier may detonation before you choose — plan accordingly.
Mucktorok Boss Fight — Sidon Integration
Mucktorok is the Water Temple's final boss. The fight has two phases:
Phase 1: Mucktorok hides inside a sludge shark construct. Sidon's water explosion detonates the sludge construct, exposing Mucktorok. Use the water platform Sidon creates (in Temple boss fight specific mode) to stay mobile above rising sludge.
Phase 2: Mucktorok moves faster and the sludge recombines faster. Time Sidon's water burst to land the moment the shark construct is close — the radius has to reach it at point-blank range. After exposure, standard attack window.
Post-fight relevance: Sludge mechanics don't appear elsewhere in the game, making Sidon's sludge-clearing ability specific to this boss. His general barrier utility is what carries forward.
Sage Spirit Positioning
Like all sage spirits, Sidon's apparition follows Link and can be recalled to a tight following position or sent to hover at range. Key positioning notes:
- Keep Sidon close during dungeon traversal — his passive water throws occasionally hit switches and enemies you haven't targeted
- On Blood Moon nights, sage abilities recharge slightly faster — use Sidon's barrier more aggressively during Blood Moon combat sessions
- In the Depths, Sidon's water detonation is one of the few AoE moves that doesn't require Zonai resources — useful when conserving device capsules
Sidon's Story Arc
Sidon in TotK is older than in BotW but carries the same earnest warmth. His character arc involves:
- Zora's Domain crisis — the Gloom rain is literally raining sludge on the domain, corroding the water and making the Zoras sick
- His conflict with Yona — the Sage visions he's been having are frightening him, and he initially conceals them; the quest reveals his fear of failing his people
- Post-temple growth — becoming the Sage of Water reconnects him to his people's heritage; he's more confident, less performed-brave and more genuinely grounded
Lore note: Sidon is the descendant of Mipha, the BotW Champion of the Zora. The game doesn't call this out explicitly, but the visual resemblance is intentional. Sidon carries on a lineage of Zora champions serving Hyrule.
Upgrade Priority
Sidon is worth upgrading early. The difference between base and first upgrade is significant:
| Upgrade | Requirement | Key Benefit | |---------|------------|-------------| | Base | (default) | Single block, moderate detonation radius | | Upgrade 1 | Complete Water Temple | Barrier absorbs 2 hits before forced detonation | | Upgrade 2 | 10 Zonaite + King's Scale | Detonation radius +50%, water damage increased | | Upgrade 3 | Lynel Heart + rare drop | Max charge detonation staggers most non-boss enemies |
