Sky Island Exploration Guide — Navigation, Resources & Secrets
The sky islands of Hyrule are one of TotK's defining additions — floating archipelagos at varying altitudes packed with Zonai ruins, shrines, Korok Seeds, and rare materials. Efficient sky island exploration requires understanding launch points, traversal chains, and how to maintain altitude across gaps.
Sky Island Fundamentals
How to Reach Sky Islands
Sky islands are accessed from the surface via Skyview Towers — each tower launches Link into the air, and many have sky islands directly above or reachable by gliding from the apex. The key traversal skills:
- Skyview Tower launch — the primary entry point for most sky island clusters
- Ascend (Recall ability) — use on the underside of floating stone platforms to jump through solid rock and emerge on top
- Paraglider — essential for crossing gaps between islands; stamina management is critical
- Recall — if a platform or object has moved, Recall can send it back along its path (useful for moving platforms that carry you upward)
Altitude Zones
Sky islands exist at three rough altitude bands:
| Zone | Altitude | Access | |------|----------|--------| | Low (Shallow Sky) | 200–600m | Most Skyview Tower launches | | Mid (Main Archipelago) | 600–1,000m | Chained ascents from low islands | | High (Deep Sky) | 1,000–1,500m+ | Island stacks, specialized routes |
The Light Dragon flies above 1,400m — reaching her requires the highest island stacks in the game.
Great Sky Island — The Tutorial Archipelago
The Great Sky Island is the opening area of TotK and remains the most fully developed sky island cluster in the game. It contains:
- 4 shrines (Ukouh, In-isa, Gutanbac, Nachoyah)
- Multiple Zonai construct facilities
- Zonai Device dispensers (the first ones you'll encounter)
- The Paraglider (obtained here)
Revisiting Great Sky Island
After completing the opening sequence, the Great Sky Island remains accessible and useful:
- Nachoyah Shrine (fast travel point) provides reliable access
- Zonai Device dispensers still function after the opening
- The island's elevated position makes it a good launch point for reaching higher northern sky islands
Resource tip: The Great Sky Island has several Brightbloom Seeds and Zonai Charges. Return here when your stocks run low — the constructs that drop Charges respawn on Blood Moon.
Region-by-Region Sky Island Clusters
North Hyrule Sky Archipelago
The largest sky island cluster in the game, positioned north of Hyrule Castle.
Access: Launch from Lookout Landing Skyview Tower or Lindor's Brow Skyview Tower
What's here:
- Multiple shrines at varying altitudes
- The sky ruins above Hyrule Castle (story-relevant)
- The highest accessible altitude for reaching the Light Dragon
- Zonai Construct farming opportunities
Navigation: The islands here form stacked columns. Use Ascend on each platform's underside to climb the stack vertically. A full climb from the lowest island to the highest platform takes 3–5 Ascend uses and reaches approximately 1,200–1,400m altitude.
Eldin Sky Islands (North)
Positioned above the Death Mountain / Eldin region.
Access: Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower or Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower
What's here:
- Dinraal's flight path passes directly through this cluster
- Fire-element Zonai constructs
- Several shrines
- Sunshroom clusters on certain platforms
Tip: The sky islands north of Death Mountain sit at Dinraal's exact flight altitude — position yourself on the edge of these islands at dawn and Dinraal will fly past at arm's length.
Lanayru / East Sea Sky Islands
A scattered archipelago east of Mount Lanayru over the ocean.
Access: Lanayru Wetlands Skyview Tower or Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower
What's here:
- Thunderhead Isles (major sky dungeon access)
- Naydra occasionally passes through the lower edge of this cluster
- Zora-themed ruins and materials
- Rare ore deposits
Special: The Thunderhead Isles are a distinct sky island cluster with unique content — see the Thunderhead Isles guide for full detail.
Akkala Sky Islands
Smaller cluster above the Akkala Highlands.
Access: Akkala Skyview Tower
What's here:
- Dinraal's flight path occasionally clips through
- Star Fragment spawn locations (sky islands are high-probability Star Fragment landing zones)
- Scattered Zonai ruins
Gerudo Highland Sky Islands
Positioned above the Gerudo region and the Gerudo Highlands.
Access: Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower or Necluda Sea Skyview Tower
What's here:
- Thyphlo Ruins sky island cluster (puzzle area)
- The sky path leading to the Spirit Temple
- Cold-environment sky islands — bring cold resistance or Spicy Peppers
Efficient Sky Island Navigation
The Ascend Chain
The single most efficient sky island technique is chaining Ascend uses to climb island stacks:
- Stand beneath a floating stone shelf → use Ascend to pass through it → emerge on top
- Immediately look for the next floating stone above → use Ascend again
- Chain 4–6 Ascend uses to reach maximum altitude on a column of stacked islands
Stamina consideration: Ascend uses no stamina. The only cost is finding the correct ceiling above you. Look for flat stone roofs, not open sky.
Paraglider Gap Crossing
Between island clusters, the paraglider is the only option. Maximize glide distance:
- Jump from the highest point of your current island
- Angle slightly downward for speed (steeper descent = faster horizontal movement until stamina runs out)
- Target the tallest structure on the destination island — you want to arrive with some height to spare
- Stamina food (Enduring Elixirs or Enduring Mushroom Skewers) extends glide distance significantly
Recall for Moving Platforms
Some sky island areas have stone platforms that travel set paths. Use Recall to reverse a platform's movement, sending it back along its path and allowing you to ride it upward. Look for tracks or grooves in the sky island surfaces — these indicate platforms with movement paths.
Sky Island Resources
Zonai Charges and Zonaite
Sky islands are primary sources of both:
- Zonaite ore — scattered on island surfaces and in Zonai ruins; mine with a weapon
- Large Zonaite — found near construct facilities; required for Crystal Refinery
- Zonai Charges — dropped by sky constructs and found in treasure chests
Respawn: Constructs respawn on Blood Moon. If you cleared a sky island area early in the game, return after a Blood Moon for fresh construct drops.
Star Fragment Landing Zones
Star Fragments fall from the sky at night. They land at random locations but significantly prefer high-altitude positions. Sky islands are disproportionate Star Fragment landing zones. If you need Star Fragments:
- Rest at a campfire on a high sky island until night
- Watch the sky for falling streaks
- Note the direction of the fall
- Glide toward where you think it landed (still on or near the island)
Star Fragments sell for 300 rupees or are used in specific armor upgrades.
Rare Materials by Region
| Sky Island Zone | Notable Materials | |-----------------|-----------------| | Great Sky Island | Brightbloom Seeds, Zonai Charges | | North Hyrule Archipelago | Large Zonaite, rare ores | | Eldin Sky Islands | Fireproof Lizards, Ruby deposits | | Akkala Sky Islands | Amber, Topaz | | Lanayru Sky | Sapphire, Naydra-adjacent |
Shrines on Sky Islands
Sky island shrines are always accessible once you reach the island — they cannot be locked behind puzzles. Several of the best fast travel points in the game are sky island shrines because their elevation makes them excellent Skyview Tower replacements for reaching other sky islands.
Key sky shrine fast travel points:
| Shrine | Location | Why Useful | |--------|----------|------------| | Nachoyah Shrine | Great Sky Island | North Hyrule high-altitude access | | Ukouh Shrine | Great Sky Island | Farosh intercept (Lake Hylia nearby) | | Mayachideg Shrine | North sky islands | Highest reliable fast travel point |
Hidden Sky Island Secrets
Korok Seeds
Sky islands have Korok Seeds hidden in the same puzzle types as surface Koroks — flowers to follow, acorn targets, pinwheel puzzles, and match-the-pattern challenges. Sky island Koroks often use the 3D nature of the environment: some are on the underside of platforms (reached via Ascend), and some appear only when you're descending between islands.
Treasure Chests
Treasure chests on sky islands frequently contain:
- Arrows (bomb flower, elemental)
- Amber and topaz
- Zonai Devices (rockets, fans, springs)
- Occasionally: weapons with rare fuse modifiers
Open every chest you find — sky island chests are non-respawning and many contain items that are scarce in early-to-mid game.
The Sky Island Challenge — Thyphlo Ruins
The Thyphlo Ruins Sky Island is a dedicated puzzle island in the North Hyrule sky. It recreates the Thyphlo Ruins from Breath of the Wild (a dark, maze-like forest) at sky altitude. Completing the island's challenge rewards a unique armor piece. This is a dedicated side quest area — plan a focused session to clear it entirely.
Stamina Management for Sky Islands
Sky island exploration is stamina-intensive. Before a sky island session:
- Cook Enduring food — adds temporary stamina wheels beyond your max, ideal for long paraglide gaps
- Bring 6–10 stamina restoring items at minimum
- Use Zonai Wings (large glider devices) for long horizontal traversal — they don't use your stamina
- Fan + board constructs — placing a Zonai Fan on a board creates a powered raft that can cross sky gaps without any stamina cost
Quick Tips
- Never jump between sky islands without identifying your landing first — falling from 800m without a paraglider despawns you at the surface
- Ascend is your best friend — always check for flat rock ceilings above you before trying to climb a cliff face
- The compass matters up here — sky island navigation benefits from noting cardinal directions; island clusters are consistently positioned relative to the regions they're above
- Watch for the glowing orange Zonai sigils — they mark interactable Zonai mechanisms and often trigger platforms, bridges, or device dispensers
- Bring a good stock of arrows — sky island constructs require arrows to fight efficiently, and many sky puzzle solutions involve shooting targets
