Stalhorse Guide — How to Find and Ride Stalhorses in TotK
Stalhorse Guide — Riding the Undead Mounts of Hyrule
Stalhorses are skeletal horse mounts that appear at night across Hyrule, ridden by Bokoblin or Stalkoblin enemies. Knocking off the rider and mounting a Stalhorse gives you a free, fast mount — no taming required. The catch: they collapse at dawn.
What Is a Stalhorse?
A Stalhorse is a skeletal undead horse. Unlike living wild horses, Stalhorses:
- Do not require taming — once the rider is knocked off, press A to mount immediately.
- Cannot be registered at stables — the stable hand refuses to take them.
- Collapse at sunrise (approximately 5–6 AM in-game time) — you will be dismounted mid-ride.
- Have good speed — roughly equivalent to a 4-star wild horse.
- Respawn each night at fixed locations regardless of Blood Moon timing.

How to Dismount the Rider and Mount the Stalhorse
Method 1 — Arrow Shot (Safest)
- Approach from outside detection range at night.
- Draw bow, aim at the Bokoblin rider (not the horse).
- Fire one standard arrow — the rider is knocked off.
- Sprint to the Stalhorse and press A to mount.
- The Stalhorse does not flee after its rider is removed — it stands still for 5–8 seconds.
Method 2 — Stasis + Mount
- Activate camera and take a photo for the Compendium (optional but efficient).
- Approach on foot from behind.
- Jump onto the Stalhorse directly (hold A near the horse's back side).
- The Bokoblin rider will be knocked off automatically if you land on the horse.
Method 3 — Throw Something at the Rider
- Pick up a rock or bomb barrel nearby.
- Use Ultrahand to fling it at the rider from range.
- A direct hit dismounts the Bokoblin without alerting any other enemies.
Stalhorse Behavior and Limitations
Speed and Handling
- Stalhorses move at approximately 4-star speed.
- They respond to standard horse controls (ZL to stop, spur with A up to 3 times).
- They do not have a bond meter — behavior is always neutral.
- Spurs replenish the same as a registered horse.
Dawn Collapse
When the in-game clock approaches sunrise:
- The Stalhorse begins to slow automatically around 4:30 AM.
- At exactly 5:00–5:30 AM the Stalhorse collapses: it falls to pieces on the ground and Link dismounts.
- There is no warning sound — watch the in-game clock manually.
Planning advice: Mount a Stalhorse at 10 PM for a maximum ~7 hours of in-game riding before collapse. Avoid starting long-distance routes after 3 AM.
Encounters During Night Rides
- Stalkoblin groups on foot will not aggro the Stalhorse you're riding — they ignore it.
- Bokoblin camps on horseback will attack you even on a Stalhorse — treat it as a regular mounted combat.
- Stal enemies (Stalkoblin, Stalmo, Stalizalfos) do not react differently to a Stalhorse rider.
Can You Keep a Stalhorse?
No. Stables explicitly refuse to register Stalhorses. The stable hand says: "That's not an ordinary horse! I can't take in something like that!"
Malanya cannot revive Stalhorses. The Horse God only accepts registered horses. Stalhorses exist outside the horse registration system entirely.
The only way to "keep" using Stalhorses is to know their spawn locations and return each night. Because they respawn every night at fixed coordinates, you effectively have unlimited access as long as you arrive after 9 PM.
Why Use a Stalhorse?
Pros:
- Free, no taming required — instant mount.
- Fast speed comparable to a registered 4-star horse.
- Available in areas where you haven't tamed horses yet.
- Useful for covering ground quickly in Akkala and Eldin at night when those areas are most dangerous on foot.
- Riding a Stalhorse does not prevent you from registering other horses you tame during the same night.
Cons:
- Cannot be registered or kept permanently.
- Collapses at dawn — plan routes accordingly.
- Cannot be called with the whistle after dismounting (it has no bond).
- Not useful for any quest that requires a "registered horse."
Stalhorse Combat Notes
You can fight from a Stalhorse identically to a registered horse:
- Draw bow while mounted for mounted archery (ZR).
- Charge attacks on horseback with ZR held.
- The Stalhorse will not flee from combat unlike wild animals.
- However, if the Stalhorse takes enough direct damage from enemy attacks it collapses prematurely.
- Protect it from enemy arrows and melee hits if you want to preserve the mount through a combat zone.
Compendium Photography
Photograph a Stalhorse for the Hyrule Compendium — it's a unique enemy/creature entry separate from regular horses. The photo also unlocks Sensor+ targeting for Stalhorses, helping you locate the nightly spawns faster in the future.
