Stone Talus All Types Guide — Every Talus Variant in TotK
Overview
Stone Talus enemies are massive rock golems found throughout Hyrule's surface, sky islands, and the Depths. Each Talus type has a ore deposit weakpoint on its back that must be struck to deal significant damage. Defeating a Talus yields valuable ore and monster parts. Tears of the Kingdom features more Talus variants than Breath of the Wild, including new types tied to the Depths and Battle Talus variants. This guide covers every type.
All Talus Variants
Stone Talus (Standard)
The baseline variant, found across Hyrule's surface in rocky terrain. Its weakpoint ore deposit is a grey-brown rock cluster on its upper back or shoulder. Climb onto its back and strike the ore deposit with a strong weapon.
- HP: Low-Medium
- Loot: Flint, Amber, Opal, Topaz (rare)
- Best weapon: Two-handed hammer fused with a boulder or metal block
Stone Talus (Luminous)
Found in caves and nighttime environments. The ore deposit glows faintly, making it easier to spot. Otherwise identical behavior to the standard type.
- HP: Low-Medium
- Loot: Luminous Stone, Flint, Amber
- Location: Named caves, mountain caves throughout Hyrule
Igneo Talus
The fire variant, found on and around Death Mountain and in volcanic regions. Its entire body radiates heat — approaching without Fireproof armor or a Fireproof Elixir will set Link ablaze. The ore weakpoint is on its back but surrounded by molten rock.
- HP: High
- Loot: Ruby, Amber, Flint, Fireproof Lizard (rare)
- Weakness: Ice arrows cool the surface temporarily, enabling safe climbing
- Location: Death Mountain slopes, Eldin canyon
Frost Talus
The ice variant found in the Hebra Mountains and snowy regions. Its surface is coated in ice. Climbing it without cold-resist armor deals chip damage and slows movement.
- HP: Medium-High
- Loot: Sapphire, Opal, Amber
- Weakness: Fire arrows melt the ice coating temporarily
- Location: Hebra, North Tabantha Snowfield, Gerudo Highlands (upper peaks)
Battle Talus
A new variant in TotK featuring Bokoblin or Moblin riders standing atop the Talus and throwing spears or bombs at Link. The riders must be dealt with before safely reaching the ore weakpoint.
- HP: High (shared between Talus body and riders)
- Loot: Talus ore + monster parts from riders
- Strategy: Use arrows to knock riders off before climbing; or climb quickly and fight through the riders on top
- Location: Various surface areas, more common in Akkala and Eldin regions
Stone Talus (Depths)
Found throughout the Depths, gloom-covered variants of the standard Stone Talus. These are physically identical but the Depths floor surrounding them is laced with gloom. Avoid standing in the gloom while fighting.
- HP: Low-Medium
- Loot: Zonaite (sometimes), Flint, Amber
- Caution: Gloom drain makes extended fights costly — bring Sundelion food
Rare Talus (Ore-Rich)
Occasionally a Talus will spawn with a Diamond or Ruby cluster as its weakpoint ore deposit. These are worth targeting specifically for high-value gem farming. The ore type is visible before combat — scan with the Purah Pad Sensor if you need to identify materials.
General Combat Strategy
- Approach from behind — most Talus enemies don't aggro until you're within a certain range or disturb them
- Bait an arm slam — when the Talus slams its arm into the ground, the arm stays low briefly; run up the arm and leap to the back
- Strike the ore weakpoint — two-handed weapons with stone or metal fusions deal the most damage; flurry rush when possible
- Use Yunobo — his rolling fire ability deals direct damage to the ore deposit from range, useful against Igneo and Frost variants
Loot Summary
| Talus Type | Best Loot | |-----------|----------| | Standard | Opal, Topaz | | Luminous | Luminous Stone | | Igneo | Ruby | | Frost | Sapphire | | Battle | Monster Parts + ore | | Depths | Zonaite (occasional) |
Tips
- The Sensor on the Purah Pad can be set to detect Talus if you have one registered in the Hyrule Compendium
- Two-handed stone maul weapons (boulder fused to claymore) deal the most consistent weakpoint damage
- Igneo Talus in the Depths variant doesn't require Fireproof armor — the Depths cold cancels the heat effect
- Battle Talus riders can be sniped with Keese Eyeball arrows for homing shots
