Yiga Clan Hideout & Depths Guide — Medallion Scheme, Barbarian Armor & All Outpost Locations

The Yiga Clan has abandoned their surface hideout and colonized the Depths. What was a single compound in Breath of the Wild is now a sprawling underground network of outposts, ambush squads, and construction projects run by Master Kohga — who has apparently decided the best way to defeat Link is to build increasingly elaborate machines. The Depths Yiga presence is tied to critical rewards including the Barbarian Armor set and the 16 Yiga Clan Schematics used to construct powerful Zonai builds.

Quick Stats

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | Yiga Depths Outposts | 16 (one per major Depths region) | | Barbarian Armor Pieces | 3 (Head, Chest, Legs) | | Master Kohga Fights | 4 (story-gated, in Central Mine) | | Schematics | 16 total (one per outpost) | | Key Reward | Barbarian Armor, Schematics, Poes, Zonaite | | Surface Entry Points | Kara Kara Bazaar, Gerudo Canyon, Akkala Highlands (original hideout) |

The Yiga Clan's Depths Operation

Why They're in the Depths

Master Kohga, humiliated after his defeat in Breath of the Wild, has allied with Ganondorf and taken his Yiga Clan into the Depths to sabotage Link's dungeon progression. Each of the four major dungeons (Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning) is preceded by a Master Kohga encounter in the Central Mine where Kohga uses increasingly complex Zonai-device-powered machines to try to stop you.

Beyond Master Kohga's four scripted fights, the Yiga Clan has established 16 outposts throughout the Depths — one for each major underground zone. Each outpost is a fortified camp with Yiga Footsoldiers, Yiga Blademasters, and one or more chests.

The Medallion Scheme

The Yiga Clan's surface-level scheme involves disguising members as NPCs to sell fake Zonai Survey Team Medallions to travelers. If you encounter suspicious NPCs near Skyview Towers or in remote areas offering a "special medallion," these are Yiga members — attack them (or accept and then confront them) to receive Rupees and occasionally rare materials.

The medallion scheme is a side activity that generates extra rupees and reveals Yiga patrol patterns across the surface. It does not affect Depths outpost progress.

Master Kohga — Four Boss Fights

Master Kohga fights are gated to story progression and occur sequentially in the Central Mine (Depths directly below Hyrule Castle area). You must complete each fight before the next unlocks.

Fight 1 — Basic Zonai Machine

Kohga uses a simple Zonai sled with a spike ball. Counter: Ultrahand the spike ball and throw it at Kohga. Two hits ends the fight.

Reward: 100 Rupees, access to deeper Central Mine area

Fight 2 — Elevated Platform

Kohga uses a fan-driven platform to stay airborne. Counter: Ultrahand the sphere and launch it upward to hit him while airborne, or use Recall on his own projectiles.

Reward: 200 Rupees, next Central Mine section opens

Fight 3 — Water Platform

Kohga fights over water on a floating platform with a water-wheel contraption. Counter: Ultrahand the contraption to redirect it, or swim under and attack from below using Ascend.

Reward: 300 Rupees, next area opens

Fight 4 — Final Depths Encounter

Kohga deploys a complex multi-device machine. Counter: Study the machine for 5 seconds — each fight follows the same pattern of "use Ultrahand on Kohga's own weapon against him."

Reward: 500 Rupees, a Kohga Chest (contains Large Zonaite + schematic), and completion of the Central Mine storyline

Yiga Depths Outposts — Locations

Each Depths zone has one Yiga outpost. They are marked by a cluster of Yiga-red torches and a crude wooden structure built in the dark. The chest at each outpost contains a Yiga Clan Schematic — one of 16 total — plus bonus Poes and Rupees.

North Depths Outposts

  • Akkala Depths Outpost — northeast quadrant, near the Akkala Lightroot cluster; guarded by 2 Footsoldiers + 1 Blademaster
  • Eldin Depths Outpost — southeast of the Eldin surface chasm; Blademaster carries a Fire Blade fused weapon
  • Lanayru Depths Outpost — west-central Lanayru Depths zone; accessible via Zora's Domain area chasm

Central Depths Outposts

  • Hyrule Field Depths — multiple small outposts near the Central Mine perimeter; Footsoldiers only
  • Necluda Depths Outpost — below East Necluda, near Hateno Village surface coordinates
  • Faron Depths Outpost — south Faron Depths; densest Yiga concentration (4–5 enemies per camp)

West Depths Outposts

  • Gerudo Depths Outpost — below Gerudo Desert; hot surface but Depths temperature is standard
  • Tabantha Depths Outpost — northwest Depths, sparse enemies, relatively safe approach
  • Hebra Depths Outpost — far northwest; long travel from nearest chasm, bring extra Brightbloom Seeds

Other Outposts

The remaining outposts are distributed across Korok Forest Depths, Woodland Depths, Great Plateau Depths, and the Dueling Peaks Depths zone. Each follows the same structure: 2–4 Yiga enemies, one chest with a Schematic, Poe clusters nearby.

Barbarian Armor — Full Set Guide

The Barbarian Armor set is the best offensive armor in the game, granting Attack Up at each level and a full-set bonus of Charge Attack Stamina Up at full set completion. All three pieces are in the Depths.

Piece 1 — Barbarian Helm

  • Location: Depths below the Trilby Plain (central Hyrule), in a chest guarded by a Yiga outpost
  • Exact landmark: Find the Maoikes Lightroot and travel northwest — the helm chest is in a Yiga camp approximately 300 meters from the Lightroot

Piece 2 — Barbarian Armor (Chest)

  • Location: Depths below Crenel Hills (Lanayru region), in a chest inside a sealed Yiga structure
  • Access: Defeat 3 Yiga Footsoldiers and 1 Blademaster at the outpost; chest is unlocked after all enemies are down

Piece 3 — Barbarian Leg Wraps

  • Location: Depths below the East Necluda highlands (Dueling Peaks area), in a chest at the Depths outpost
  • Access: The chest is inside the outpost structure; clear enemies first

Upgrading Barbarian Armor

All three pieces can be upgraded at Great Fairy Fountains (4 tiers):

  • Tier 1 → 2: Bokoblin Horn, Bokoblin Fang
  • Tier 2 → 3: Moblin Horn, Moblin Fang
  • Tier 3 → 4: Lynel Horn, Lynel Hoof, Star Fragment

Full Tier 4 set is the highest attack build in the game, stacking with attack food and Yellow Lynel weapons.

Yiga Schematics — What They Do

The 16 Yiga Clan Schematics are Autobuild blueprints for Zonai-based constructs. Unlike normal Autobuild entries (which you save by seeing a Zonai device in the wild), Schematics unlock builds you can't find anywhere else:

  • Yiga battle machines (modeled on Kohga's own designs)
  • Glider variants with built-in weapons
  • Defensive wall structures with Cannon attachments

Schematics are used via the Autobuild ability — open the Autobuild menu after acquiring a Schematic and it appears in your saved blueprint list. Building the blueprint costs Zonaite based on which Zonai devices it requires.

Stealth vs. Combat at Yiga Outposts

Combat Approach (Recommended)

Yiga enemies in the Depths are mostly Footsoldiers (low HP, sword fighters) and Blademasters (moderate HP, whirlwind attacks). The Depths gives you no visibility advantage for stealth — enemies patrol with torches. Direct combat is faster.

Recommended loadout per outpost:

  • Any sword with a Lynel Saber Horn fuse (high damage, fast clears)
  • 5 arrows for eye shots on Blademasters
  • A fire weapon if any Yiga have shields (fire breaks wooden shields instantly)

Stealth Option

If your hearts are low from gloom damage, stealth-knock is viable:

  1. Crouch (hold Left Stick) when approaching the outpost
  2. Throw food near an isolated guard (Yiga are still distracted by Bananas in TotK, same as BotW)
  3. Backstab with a charged attack while they eat (1-shot on Footsoldiers)
  4. Clear the camp one enemy at a time

Farming Yiga Outposts

Post-completion, all Yiga outposts respawn after Blood Moon. Once you've collected all 16 Schematics, return farming yields:

  • Poes (4–8 per outpost) — trade with Bargainer Statues for Depths armor and stat upgrades
  • Zonaite from the nearby ore deposits
  • Eightfold Longblade — Blademasters drop this consistently; great fuse base weapon
