All Wells Guide — Hidden Passages & Underground Secrets

Wells are small circular shafts found throughout Hyrule's villages, settlements, and wilderness. They look like ordinary watering wells from the surface but descend into underground chambers filled with enemies, collectibles, Poes, and sometimes passages to mini-dungeons or hidden areas.

Why Explore Wells?

Wells contain some of the game's most accessible hidden content:

  • Poes — Ghostly spirits you collect and trade to Bargainer Statues for unique items
  • Hidden chests — Contains rare materials, weapons, and armor pieces
  • Dungeon passages — Some wells connect to small underground areas not accessible from the surface
  • Korok Seeds — Several wells contain Korok seed puzzles at the bottom
  • Enemy camps — Some wells have Horriblin or Bokoblin infestations requiring combat

Equipment recommended:

  • A light source (Brightbloom Seeds or a torch)
  • Strong downward attack (landing from height deals fall damage — use Softfall Shield Fuse to reduce it)
  • 2-3 mid-strength weapons for clearing well enemies
  • At least 1 fairy for emergency healing in tight underground corridors

Well Mechanics

Entering a Well

Stand next to the well and interact with it. Link will drop in. You can also simply walk off the well edge and drop directly.

Fall damage: Most wells are 1-2 stories deep — short enough to survive without full hearts. Some wells in mountainous areas or special locations are deeper. Keep hearts above 3 before dropping.

Exiting a Well

Use Ascend on the ceiling of the well chamber to exit back to the surface. If Ascend doesn't work (no solid ceiling), use the ladder or rope in the well shaft.

Poe Collection

Poes appear as glowing blue orbs at the bottom of wells. Approach and collect them. They disappear if you leave the area without collecting, but respawn after a Blood Moon.

Hyrule Field Wells

Lookout Landing Well

Location: East side of Lookout Landing, near the main gate Contains: 1 Poe, 1 chest with Hylian Shield Fragment (or similar), Horriblin ×2 Notes: One of the easiest well combats — the enclosed space makes Horriblin archers predictable. Fight in the narrow corridor and they can't dodge.

Hyrule Castle Town Well

Location: Multiple wells scattered through the ruins of Hyrule Castle Town Contains: 2 Poes, hidden chest, connecting underground passage to Castle Town Ruins Notes: The passage connects several wells in the ruins area — exploring them all reveals a hidden room with a Soldier's Broadsword+ chest.

Bottomless Swamp Well

Location: In the swamp southwest of Hyrule Field Contains: 1 Poe, Lizalfos infestation (×3), Opal chest Notes: The swamp water at the bottom of this well is shallow — you can wade through it. Lizalfos are aggressive in tight quarters; use bomb flowers or Yunobo's charge to clear them from range.

Akkala Wells

Tarrey Town Well

Location: Below the main Tarrey Town platform Contains: 2 Poes, hidden chest with Ruby ×2, Bokoblin ×3 Notes: Access is limited before Tarrey Town reconstruction begins. Post-reconstruction, a ladder is added making entry easier.

East Akkala Well

Location: Near the East Akkala Stable Contains: 1 Poe, Brightbloom Seeds ×5, small Horriblin camp Notes: The Brightbloom Seeds at the bottom are useful for Depths exploration. Collect them every Blood Moon.

Akkala Citadel Well

Location: At the base of Akkala Citadel ruins Contains: 2 Poes, underground passage connecting to citadel lower levels, ancient chest with Zonaite Sword Notes: The underground passage from this well provides a back entrance into the citadel ruins, bypassing Lizalfos sentries on the main approach.

Eldin Wells

Goron City Well

Location: Lower Goron City, near the hot spring Contains: 1 Poe, Fireproof Lizard ×3 (collectible, not combat), stone chest with Amber Notes: The heat inside this well requires Fireproof status. The Fireproof Lizards at the bottom can be caught for elixir ingredients — three per Blood Moon cycle.

Death Mountain Well

Location: On the road from Eldin toward Death Mountain summit Contains: 2 Poes, Construct enemy, Bomb Flower ×5, chest with Red Boss Bokoblin Horn Notes: The Construct enemy inside is a Soldier Construct II — higher threat than the surface suggests. Bring a strong weapon.

Lanayru Wells

Zora's Domain Well

Location: Below the main Zora's Domain platform, accessible by diving off an edge Contains: 2 Poes, hidden underwater chest (use Ultrahand to pull it), Luminous Stone Notes: This well is unusual — it's filled with water. Swim through and use Ultrahand to retrieve the chest from the underwater alcove. The Zora Flippers (Zora Armor bonus) makes this significantly easier.

Lanayru Wetlands Well

Location: Hidden in the rushes along Lanayru wetlands Contains: 3 Poes (highest concentration of any single well), Horriblin ×3, chest with Opal ×3 Notes: Finding this well is the challenge — it's obscured by tall grass. Look for the stone well surround among the wetland vegetation.

Necluda Wells

Hateno Village Well

Location: Near Hateno School (east part of the village) Contains: 2 Poes, Chuchu ×4, chest with Arrow Bundle ×20 Notes: Children from Hateno School mention the well is "scary" — a quest hint that it contains something. The Chuchus drop elemental Chuchu Jelly useful for elixirs.

Kakariko Village Well

Location: Center of Kakariko Village Contains: 1 Poe, underground passage connecting to Sheikah trail, hidden chest with ancient material Notes: The Sheikah trail connects to the older version of Kakariko's infrastructure. Exploring it fully reveals Sheikah-era material caches.

Lurelin Village Well

Location: In the reconstructed Lurelin Village Contains: 2 Poes, chest with Hyrule Bass ×5 (fishing resource), no enemies Notes: The easiest well — no combat, good Poe count. Complete after Lurelin Village reconstruction.

Faron Wells

Lake Hylia Bridge Well

Location: Near the south end of Lake Hylia bridge Contains: 1 Poe, Blue Horriblin, chest with Sapphire Notes: Blue Horriblins deal ice damage in enclosed spaces — bring fire-damage weapons or Flame Emitter Fuse to counter.

Faron Forest Well

Location: In Faron Forest near Daah How Shrine area Contains: 2 Poes, Stalhorse skeleton (non-hostile), chest with Red Chuchu Jelly ×5 Notes: Stalhorse skulls can be mounted and ridden briefly. More of a curiosity than combat — the Stalhorse won't attack.

Gerudo Wells

Gerudo Town Well

Location: Inside Gerudo Town (requires Gerudo disguise or post-quest access) Contains: 2 Poes, underground tunnel leading to Gerudo Secret Club area, chest with Ruby Notes: The underground tunnel provides alternative access to the Secret Club area even when the surface entrance is locked.

Kara Kara Bazaar Well

Location: At Kara Kara Bazaar oasis Contains: 1 Poe, fire-resistant material cache (Fireproof Lizard ×2, Smotherwing Butterfly ×2) Notes: Useful staging point for Death Mountain or Gerudo Desert runs — stock up on fireproof materials.

Tabantha / Hebra Wells

Rito Village Well

Location: Base level of Rito Village Contains: 2 Poes, Courser Bee Honey ×3, Bokoblin ×2, chest with Bomb Arrows ×5 Notes: Rito Village's verticality means the well is easy to miss. Drop from the lower landing platform.

Snowfield Stable Well

Location: Near Snowfield Stable, northwest Hebra Contains: 1 Poe, cold environment (requires cold resistance), chest with Warm Safflina ×5 Notes: Bring food with Heat Up effect — even the interior of this well is freezing cold.

Bargainer Statue Network

Every Poe you collect can be traded to Bargainer Statues found throughout the Depths (and one at Lookout Landing). The statues exchange Poes for:

| Item | Poe Cost | |------|---------| | Dark Hood | 150 Poes | | Dark Tunic | 150 Poes | | Dark Trousers | 150 Poes | | Dark Cloak | 200 Poes | | Autobuild schematics | 50-100 Poes each | | Large Zonaite | 3 Poes each | | Zonaite | 1 Poe each |

Priority buys: The Dark Armor set pieces are the main exclusive rewards. Large Zonaite for Energy Cell upgrades is the most efficient use of surplus Poes.

Maximizing Well Exploration

Blood Moon cycling: All well contents (enemies, Poes, some items) respawn after a Blood Moon. If you want to farm Poes, revisit high-density wells after each Blood Moon cycle.

Brightbloom Seeds: Always carry 5+ Brightbloom Seeds when well exploring. Most wells have no external light — Brightbloom Seeds thrown into corners provide enough illumination to see chests and Poes.

Map tracking: Open your Hyrule Map while underground and you'll see well chambers marked as small underground areas on the map. This is the fastest way to ensure you haven't missed a chest.
