Best Armor Sets in Tears of the Kingdom
Best Armor Sets in Tears of the Kingdom
There is no single best armor set in TotK — each set excels at a specific task. This guide covers the top sets for every situation, how to obtain them, and which Great Fairy upgrades matter most.
How Armor Upgrades Work
Each armor piece has a base defense and can be upgraded up to 4 stars at any Great Fairy Fountain.
| Upgrade Level | Defense Bonus | Cost | |---------------|---------------|------| | ★ (Level 1) | +3 | Low materials | | ★★ (Level 2) | +4 | Medium materials | | ★★★ (Level 3) | +6 | High materials + rare drops | | ★★★★ (Level 4) | +8 | Very rare materials (Silver enemy parts, Dragon Parts) |
Set bonus: Most sets grant a bonus effect when you wear all three pieces. Upgrading all three pieces to Level 2 activates the bonus. Upgrading to Level 4 strengthens it.
Tier 1 — Best Overall Combat Armor
Fierce Deity Armor
Set Bonus: Charge attack speed increase — charge attacks become nearly instant Defense: 4 per piece base → 28 per piece at ★★★★ Why it's the best: The charge attack speed boost transforms two-handed weapons into rapid-fire damage dealers. Combined with the Master Sword or a Silver Lynel weapon, this is the highest sustained DPS in the game.
How to obtain: Complete the "Misko's Treasure" side quest chain. Three pieces are hidden in treasure chests at:
- Akkala Ancient Tech Lab ruins (chest in the cellar)
- Crenel Hills cave near the Crenel Natural Bridge
- A cave in the Skull Lake area (northeast Akkala)
Upgrade materials: Lynel parts (mainly Lynel Guts at ★★★★)
Barbarian Armor
Set Bonus: Attack power up (Level 2) → further attack up (Level 4) Defense: 3 per piece base → 20 per piece at ★★★★ Why use it: Before you get Fierce Deity, Barbarian is the standard combat set. Simple attack multiplier — works with everything.
How to obtain: Found in three labyrinths across Hyrule:
- Barbarian Helm — North Lomei Labyrinth (Akkala)
- Barbarian Armor — South Lomei Labyrinth (Gerudo)
- Barbarian Leg Wraps — Lomei Labyrinth Island (far northeast ocean)
Upgrade materials: Lynel horns and hooves
Tier 2 — Best Exploration Armor
Glide Armor (Skydiving Suit)
Set Bonus: Glide attack ability (Level 2) → powerful glide attack (Level 4) Defense: 3 per piece base Why it's essential: The Glide Armor set makes skydiving much faster and allows aerial dive-bombing attacks on enemies below. With a fused weapon, glide attacks deal enormous damage. Also simply fun.
How to obtain: Purchased from Steward Constructs at three sky island locations:
- Valor Island (Lanayru Sky Archipelago)
- Courage Island (Akkala Sky Archipelago)
- Bravery Island (Gerudo Sky Archipelago)
Each requires completing a skydiving challenge to reach the island and purchase the piece.
Upgrade materials: Various sky island materials (Blue Nightshade, Keese Wings)
Climbing Gear
Set Bonus: Faster climbing speed (Level 2) → even faster + slide-jump ability (Level 4) Defense: 3 per piece base Why it matters: Hyrule's terrain requires constant climbing. This set cuts climb time by 30–40% and essentially eliminates the need for climbing elixirs.
How to obtain: Found in three caves:
- Climbing Bandana — Ploymous Mountain cave (Lanayru region, east)
- Climbing Gear — Upland Zorana Skyview Tower area cave
- Climbing Boots — Teniten cave (Akkala region)
Upgrade materials: Lizalfos Tails and Horns
Tier 3 — Best Defensive / Situational Armor
Zonaite Armor
Set Bonus: Energy recharge up — Zonai devices drain battery more slowly Defense: 3 per piece base → very high at ★★★★ Why use it: If you rely heavily on Zonai devices (hoverbikes, fans, rockets), this set dramatically extends battery life. Essential for Depths exploration with vehicle builds.
How to obtain: Purchase from Forge Constructs in the Depths using Crystallized Charges. Locations throughout the Depths near large Zonai ruins.
Depths Armor (Dark Tunic set)
Set Bonus: Gloom resistance Defense: 8 per piece base (highest base defense in the game) Why use it: The Depths are brutal. Gloom damage permanently removes heart containers until you eat Sundelion food. This set reduces Gloom damage by 30% (Level 2) to 60% (Level 4). If you're farming the Depths regularly, this is mandatory.
How to obtain: Purchase from Bargainer Statues in the Depths using Poe currency. Poes drop from Gloom Hands and are found in glowing deposits throughout the Depths.
Flamebreaker Armor
Set Bonus: Flame Guard — full immunity to fire at Level 2 Defense: 5 per piece base Why use it: Required for Death Mountain / Goron region. Also useful against Gleeoks and fire-breathing enemies.
How to obtain: Purchased from the Goron Armor Shop in Goron City after progressing the Goron regional quest.
Full Armor Upgrade Priority
If Great Fairy resources are limited, upgrade in this order:
- Depths Armor to ★★ — unlocks Gloom resistance, mandatory for safe Depths farming
- Climbing Gear to ★★ — faster climbing changes traversal permanently
- Fierce Deity or Barbarian to ★★ — combat set bonus active
- Everything else to ★★ — general defense improvement
Level ★★★★ upgrades require Silver enemy materials and Dragon Parts — save those for your primary combat and survival sets.
Armor Sets to Avoid
- Soldier's Armor — decent mid-game but outclassed quickly. Don't invest heavy upgrade materials.
- Cap of the Wild / Wild Armor set — fashion only; no meaningful set bonus.
- Stealth Armor — useful for Korok seed hunting but has zero combat value.
