Climbing Guide — Stamina, Climbing Gear & Best Routes

Climbing is the core vertical traversal mechanic in TotK. Every surface — rock faces, trees, castle walls, shrine exteriors — is climbable. Understanding stamina management and getting the Climbing Gear transforms how fast you explore Hyrule vertically. This guide covers everything.

How Climbing Works

  • ZR to grab — any vertical or angled surface above 45 degrees is climbable
  • Stamina consumption — climbing drains the green stamina wheel continuously
  • Jump while climbing — flick forward + jump to gain height quickly at 3× normal stamina cost
  • Ceiling overhangs — Link can traverse overhangs for a few seconds before losing grip
  • Rain reduces grip — climbing in rain is significantly slower and drains more stamina. Wait for rain to stop or use climbing gear to compensate.

Stamina depletes at different rates: | Action | Stamina Rate | |--------|-------------| | Normal climbing (holding) | 1× base rate | | Climbing jump (flick up) | 3× base rate | | Overhang traverse | 2× base rate | | Rain climbing | 1.5× base rate |

Stamina Management

How many stamina wheels for comfortable exploration:

  • 1 wheel (base): Barely enough for short climbs. Can't reach most peaks.
  • 2 wheels: Comfortable for most mountains and sky island approaches.
  • 3 wheels (max): Reaches essentially any surface in the game without rest.

Stamina food for extended climbs:

  • Endura Carrot dishes — temporary (yellow) stamina beyond the wheel maximum. Stack before long climbs.
  • Energizing Elixirs — restore stamina quickly mid-climb if caught depleted.
  • Hearty meals — full heart restore + yellow stamina bonus from Hearty ingredients.

Mid-climb rest: Find any small ledge, cave opening, or bump in the surface to stand on briefly and let stamina recover. Rocky cliff faces often have narrow ledges every 20–30 meters.

The Climbing Gear Set

Where to find: 3 shrine chests in Necluda region:

| Piece | Shrine | Location | |-------|--------|----------| | Climbing Gear (chest armor) | Ploymus Mountain Cave Shrine | Rocky cave above Zora's Domain approach | | Climbing Bandana (head) | Kyokugon Shrine (specific path) | East Necluda cliff shrine | | Climbing Boots (feet) | Morok Shrine | Central Necluda area |

Finding the shrines: Use Sensor+ set to "Shrine" in the Necluda region and sweep the rocky cliff faces east of Zora's Domain.

Upgrade tier effects:

  • ★★ (Level 2): Climbing Speed Up — significantly faster grip speed on surfaces
  • ★★★★ (Level 4): Max Climbing Speed — nearly twice the default climb speed

Full set bonus at ★★: Climbing Speed Up — reduces stamina consumption per meter climbed significantly.

Best Climbing Route Strategies

Eldin / Death Mountain

Challenge: Volcanic rock face + heat damage above certain altitude Approach: Flamebreaker Armor + Climbing Gear combination. Teleport to Foothill Stable → climb the lava-free eastern face → summit approach from northeast. Stamina required: 2+ wheels for summit without rest stops. Reward: Death Mountain summit has ore deposits and access to crater rim areas.

Lanayru / Mount Lanayru

Challenge: Extreme height — Mount Lanayru summit is one of the game's highest accessible peaks Approach: Lanayru Tower launch → Paraglider to mid-mountain → climb to summit Or: Snowfield Stable → cold resistance equipped → climb north face Stamina required: 2+ wheels + Endura Carrot for summit push Reward: Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower (at top), adjacent shrine, and dragon encounter zone

Hebra Mountains (Northwest)

Challenge: Cold resistance required + extreme altitude Approach: Snowquill Armor + Climbing Gear. Tabantha Bridge → north → Hebra Peak approach. Stamina required: 3 wheels for direct summit approach without rest Reward: Pikida Stonegrove and Rospro Pass Skyview Towers + Frost Talus farming zones

Hyrule Castle Exterior

Challenge: Guardian and Moblin patrols; slippery castle walls Approach: Climb at night (fewer patrols + rain less likely). Use Stealth Armor to avoid detections mid-climb. Stamina required: 1.5+ wheels for outer wall → interior approach Reward: Royal weapon chests on every floor, rooftop shrine fast travel

Ascend as Climbing Alternative

Ascend (the ability from the Great Sky Island tutorial) lets Link pass through solid ceilings. In climbing context:

  • Position under a cliff's overhang → Ascend through it → appear on top without climbing
  • Works on most rocky surfaces, castle walls, and cave ceilings
  • Takes no stamina

Best Ascend shortcuts:

  • Underneath any sky island that's positioned over a mountain peak — Ascend to the island
  • Cave roofs beneath tall surface terrain
  • Shrine exteriors if you're stuck on the approach climb

Ascend replaces the hardest part of many climbs — instead of scaling a 200m cliff face, find a cave at its base and Ascend through the top.

Rain Climbing

Rain makes rock surfaces slippery — climbing drains stamina 50% faster and jump-climbs feel sluggish. Rain is common in:

  • Faron region (frequent rain)
  • Lanayru coast
  • Central Hyrule fields

Options when it rains:

  1. Wait at a campfire until rain stops
  2. Eat a stamina-boosting meal and push through (Endura Carrot + rain = still possible)
  3. Use Ascend to bypass the worst sections
  4. Paraglide to a different approach angle less exposed to rain effects

Climbing Gear at ★★ reduces the rain penalty significantly — with full set bonus, rain climbing is only 25% slower rather than 50%.

Sky Island Climbing

Sky islands have vertical walls accessible via Paraglider approach and climbing from edge:

  • Land on the underside via hoverbike → Ascend to island surface
  • Land on a lower ledge → climb the outer wall to top

Most sky island puzzles require Ascend specifically (through platform bottoms). But the outer walls of large sky islands are fully climbable.

Quick Tips

  • Climbing + Tulin combo: Tulin's Gust at the apex of a climb jump propels Link forward AND upward — effectively adding 20% height per gust during vertical ascents
  • Stamina meter check: Before a long climb, eat an Endura Carrot dish if your wheel is under 2 — don't start a 200m climb on a single wheel
  • Regirock approach: Many mountains have a winding path approach (less steep) or a direct rock face approach (steeper, faster). The wind path is slower but free — rock face is faster but costs stamina.
  • Look for ledges: Most cliff faces have 1–3 natural resting ledges between base and summit. Map them visually before starting.
  • Cold weather + climbing: Extreme cold above certain altitudes slows Link even with cold resistance. Snowquill + Endura Carrot for northern peaks.
  • Early priority: Climbing Gear is one of the first armor sets to get — it makes the entire exploration game more efficient.
