Crystal Refinery — Upgrading Your Zonai Battery

The Crystal Refinery is the facility that expands Link's Zonai Energy Cell (battery), allowing you to power Zonai Devices for longer. Upgrading your battery is one of the most impactful character improvements in Tears of the Kingdom — more energy means longer flights, faster vehicles, and more powerful builds.

What Is the Crystal Refinery?

The Crystal Refinery is operated by a Steward Construct and accepts Crystallized Charges as payment. Each transaction at the Crystal Refinery uses Crystallized Charges to add a new energy unit (battery segment) to Link's Zonai Energy Cell.

Location: Lookout Landing — in the underground cave beneath the Emergency Shelter (the same area with the Bargainer Statue). Coordinates: -0253, -0148, -0018.

You must visit the Crystal Refinery inside the Great Sky Island during the tutorial sequence before accessing the one at Lookout Landing.

How Battery Upgrades Work

Starting Battery

Link begins with 1 Energy Cell containing 3 battery segments. This is enough to power small Zonai Devices for short durations.

Upgrading

Each upgrade at the Crystal Refinery adds 1 battery segment. Every 3 segments added completes a full Energy Cell, visually adding a new circle to the battery display in the corner of the screen.

Cost per segment: 100 Crystallized Charges (1 Crystallized Charge Large = 100 regular, or trade 100 small).

Wait — the actual exchange rate:

  • 1 Crystallized Charge = 1 unit
  • 1 Large Crystallized Charge = 20 units
  • 100 Crystallized Charges needed per segment upgrade

Maximum Battery

Link can upgrade to a maximum of 8 Energy Cells (24 battery segments). This requires 2,100 Crystallized Charges total (700 segments × 100... actually 24 segments × 100 = 2,400 total). Full battery upgrades are a significant long-term goal.

What Are Crystallized Charges?

Crystallized Charges are refined Zonaite. They come in two forms:

| Item | Value | Source | |------|-------|--------| | Crystallized Charge | 1 unit | Small Zonaite × 3 → 1 at Forge Constructs | | Large Crystallized Charge | 20 units | Large Zonaite × 3 → 1 at Forge Constructs |

They can also be found in treasure chests throughout the Depths and in some Sky Island chests.

How to Get Crystallized Charges

Method 1: Forge Constructs (Primary)

Forge Constructs are special Zonai constructs found in the Depths. They accept Zonaite and convert it into Crystallized Charges.

Exchange rate:

  • 3 Zonaite → 1 Crystallized Charge
  • 3 Large Zonaite → 1 Large Crystallized Charge (worth 20 regular)

Forge Construct locations:

  • Depths beneath Hyrule Castle (central Depths, near the main Lightroot cluster)
  • Multiple Forge Constructs scattered throughout the Depths — look near major Lightroot clusters
  • The Construct Factory in the central Depths has the highest density

Method 2: Treasure Chests

Crystallized Charges appear in:

  • Depths treasure chests (commonly in the stone chests near Lightroots)
  • Sky Island treasure chests (the golden chests on major sky islands)
  • Challenge rooms on Sky Islands

Method 3: Enemy Drops

Some Zonai Construct enemies drop Crystallized Charges or Zonaite on defeat:

  • Zonai Constructs (all types) drop Zonaite
  • Soldier Constructs drop 1–3 Zonaite
  • Armored Constructs drop more

Method 4: Bargainer Statues

Bargainer Statues in the Depths sell Large Zonai Charges (battery refill, not upgrade currency) for Poes, but not Crystallized Charges directly. Do not confuse Large Zonai Charge (consumable) with Large Crystallized Charge (upgrade currency).

Farming Crystallized Charges Efficiently

Best Farming Route

  1. Unlock the central Depths Forge Constructs — the area directly below Hyrule Castle has multiple Forge Constructs in close proximity.
  2. Collect Zonaite — mine the glowing orange ore deposits throughout the Depths. Each node yields 3–8 Zonaite.
  3. Process at Forge Constructs — exchange Zonaite for Crystallized Charges in bulk.
  4. Blood Moon respawn — Zonaite deposits respawn on Blood Moons, making this a repeatable loop.

Fastest Route Breakdown

| Action | Yield | |--------|-------| | One full ore circuit in central Depths | ~60–100 Zonaite | | Converted to Crystallized Charges | 20–33 charges | | Number of circuits for 1 battery segment | 3–5 circuits |

Estimated time per segment: 15–20 minutes of active farming.

Sky Island Chests (Early Game)

Before you can farm the Depths efficiently, Sky Islands provide Crystallized Charges in chest form. Clear every golden chest on Great Sky Island and surrounding sky archipelagos — they frequently contain 3–10 Crystallized Charges.

Upgrade Priority

First 3 segments (first full cell): Top priority. The starting battery runs out extremely fast in flight and with complex Zonai builds. Getting to 2 full Energy Cells makes early exploration dramatically smoother.

Segments 4–9 (cells 2–3): High priority before attempting major sky exploration or high-altitude sky islands. Three cells is the comfortable threshold for hoverbike travel across the map.

Segments 10–24 (cells 4–8): Quality of life. More battery means longer uninterrupted flights, more complex vehicle builds, and the ability to use power-hungry devices like multiple fans simultaneously. Max battery is a late-game achievement.

Tips

  • Don't ignore Depths chests: Many players miss Crystallized Charges by skipping the stone treasure chests in the Depths. Open every one — they're often worth 3–10 charges each.
  • Large Zonaite > small Zonaite: Prioritize converting Large Zonaite first. Each gives 20 charges for 3 ore vs. 1 charge for 3 small ore — significantly more efficient.
  • Upgrade early, upgrade often: Battery upgrades have no diminishing returns. The earliest upgrades feel the most impactful but each additional cell continues to improve the gameplay experience.
  • Don't confuse charge types: Zonai Charge and Large Zonai Charge are consumables (they refill your current battery). Crystallized Charge is the upgrade currency. They look similar in your inventory — check the item description before spending.
