Death Mountain — Complete Guide

Death Mountain is Eldin's volcanic heart and the location of Goron City, the Fire Temple, and some of the game's most valuable ore deposits. It's also one of the most punishing environments without the right preparation. This guide covers everything from first arrival to full completion.

Before You Go — Preparation

Death Mountain's upper slopes deal constant fire damage without fire resistance. Prepare one of:

Option 1: Flamebreaker Armor (recommended)

  • Buy at Goron City armor shop: 700 Rupees per piece (3 pieces = 2,100R for the set)
  • Two pieces provide enough resistance for most of the mountain
  • Full set bonus: Fireproof — complete fire immunity even in lava-adjacent zones

Option 2: Fireproof Elixirs

  • Cook Fireproof Lizard + Bokoblin Guts = Fireproof Elixir (10-14 minutes per high-quality cook)
  • Fireproof Lizards found on Death Mountain's lower slopes
  • Cheaper upfront but requires constant renewal

Option 3: Fireproof Meals

  • Smotherwing Butterfly + any monster part = Fireproof Meal
  • Smotherwing Butterflies on Death Mountain slopes

Goron City

Goron City is the main hub on Death Mountain — stables, shops, and side quests.

Key shops:

  • Armor Shop — sells full Flamebreaker Set and Goron Tunic
  • Canteen — sells Goron Spice and cooking ingredients; no inn but a cooking pot nearby
  • Ore Shop — buys and sells ore and gems at standard prices

Key NPCs:

  • Bludo — former boss, gives Yunobo's backstory and first fire temple direction
  • Fyson — the Zonai merchant; starts carrying Zonai Devices after specific event
  • Dino — mining NPC with a side quest about Marbled Gohma ore

Main Quest — Fire Temple

The Fire Temple is reached via Eldin Canyon on Death Mountain's upper face. It's the third or fourth temple most players tackle.

Approach:

  1. Travel north through Eldin Canyon past Goron City
  2. Follow the mine track route up the crater's west side
  3. Yunobo (your sage companion) activates the mine cart system — use it

Fire Temple overview: The Fire Temple is built inside Death Mountain's volcano crater. Five locks must be opened using Yunobo's rolling rock ability and Ultrahand. The temple emphasizes Yunobo's Rock Roar sage ability — use it on every cracked wall and ore-blocked path.

Boss: Marbled Gohma

  • A giant spider made of rock and magma
  • Weak point: the glowing eye on its abdomen
  • Phase 1: Roll Yunobo at the legs to break them, then hit the exposed eye with arrows
  • Phase 2: Clings to ceiling — time Yunobo rolls with the rock-leg swings
  • Best tactic: Bomb Arrows to the eye from range, then use Yunobo's Rock Roar at close range during the stun window
  • Reward: Yunobo permanent upgrade + Marbled Gohma materials

Igneo Talus Locations

Igneo Talus are Death Mountain's signature miniboss — fire-type Stone Talus with molten bodies.

| Igneo Talus | Location | Coordinates | |-------------|----------|-------------| | Igneo Talus (south face) | Eldin Canyon | (1697, 2804, 511) | | Igneo Talus (east crater) | Near summit | (2086, 3422, 763) | | Igneo Talus (west approach) | Eldin Canyon west | (1320, 2440, 480) | | Igneo Pebblit (small, multiple) | Crater rim | Scattered |

Igneo Talus strategy:

  • Ice Arrows cool the body — fire 3 Ice Arrows to freeze the Talus temporarily
  • While frozen: climb to the ore node on its back and attack with your best weapon
  • Repeat 3-4 cycles to kill
  • Drops: Rubies (2-4), Flint, Amber, rare Diamond

Ore Deposits — Best Mining Areas

Death Mountain has the highest Ruby and Flint concentration of any region.

| Area | Primary Drops | |------|---------------| | Crater rim ore fields | Ruby, Flint, Amber | | Upper canyon walls | Ruby, Diamond (rare) | | Eldin cave systems | Flint, Amber, occasional Topaz | | Igneo Talus kills | Ruby (highest rate) |

Mining loop: Follow the mine track from Goron City through the Eldin Canyon to the crater rim. Hit all ore nodes on both sides of the track. Total loop: ~20 nodes, 8-15 minute run, 2-5 Rubies average.

Side Quests

| Quest | Giver | Reward | |-------|-------|--------| | Yunobo of Goron City | Main quest chain | Sage's Will fragment | | Dino's Ore Obsession | Dino (Goron City) | Eldin Ore × 5 | | The Lizard's Leg Elixir | Fireproof Lizard NPC | Fireproof Elixir recipe | | Missing Goron Brother | Traveling Goron NPC | Rupees | | Goron City's Missing Statue | Bludo | Amber + Flint rewards |

Most Goron City side quests are quick and reward ore or Fireproof Elixirs — complete them during your first visit.

Key Collectibles

  • Korok Seeds: Death Mountain has dozens in the crater area — look for flowers, floating platforms, and heavy rocks on small ledges
  • Lightroots (Depths): Directly below Death Mountain's major structures — access from Eldin Depths entry caves
  • Dragon Part (Dinraal): The fire dragon Dinraal circles Death Mountain daily — collect scale, claw, fang, or horn for high-value upgrade materials

Tips

  • Updrafts: Death Mountain's volcanic heat creates powerful updrafts at cave entrances and near lava flows. Use these for free altitude gain — open your paraglider in any rising hot air column.
  • Flint is everywhere: You'll accumulate huge quantities of Flint on Death Mountain. Save 20-30 for campfire use; sell the rest at 5R each in large batches.
  • Night temperature: Death Mountain is hot at night too — fire resistance is needed 24 hours. Don't swap to cold resist at night like other regions.
  • Mine cart fast travel: Once you activate Goron City's mine cart network, you can ride carts as fast travel between Eldin Canyon and the crater — significantly faster than walking the slope.
  • Cobble Crusher availability: Goron City sells the Cobble Crusher, the best mining weapon in the game. Buy one immediately on arrival.
