Dragon Farming Guide — Scales, Claws, Fangs & Horn Shards

TotK has 4 dragons flying fixed routes across Hyrule: Farosh (lightning), Naydra (ice), Dinraal (fire), and Sella (the Light Dragon). Each drops powerful materials when you hit their body parts mid-flight. This guide covers where to find them, what to collect, and how to use the drops efficiently.

Dragon Basics

All dragons are invulnerable — you cannot kill them. You can only collect materials by landing on them or hitting specific body parts with arrows.

Material drop per visit:

  • Each dragon drops 1 material per 10-minute real-time window
  • If you collect a scale, you must wait (or fast travel to reset the timer) before getting another
  • Blood Moon does NOT reset the timer — the 10-minute window is real time, not in-game events

How to collect:

  • Scale: Stand on the dragon's back → scale on the body surface — or hit the body with any arrow
  • Claw: Hit one of the 4 leg/claw areas with an arrow
  • Fang: Hit the mouth/fang area (aim at the snout)
  • Horn Shard: Hit the horn (hardest to aim — the horn is the most valuable material)

One material per collection window — you get whichever part you target, up to one per session. Prioritize the most valuable part (usually Horn Shards).

Dragon Flight Routes

Farosh — The Lightning Dragon

Appearance: Yellow with lightning arcs constantly sparking

Route: Farosh flies a circuit over the Faron/Lake Hylia region in southern Hyrule.

  • Visible south of Lake Hylia
  • Rises from Lake Hylia at certain times and flies over the Faron River area
  • Best access point: Ukouh Shrine on the Lake Hylia cliffs — shoot arrows as Farosh passes

Time of day: Farosh is active primarily around dawn (5-7 AM in-game). Wait by the lake at dawn.

Materials: | Part | Drop | Use | |------|------|-----| | Body | Farosh's Scale | Armor upgrades, elixirs | | Claw | Farosh's Claw | Armor upgrades | | Fang | Farosh's Fang | Armor upgrades | | Horn | Farosh's Horn Shard | Best Fuse material — high electric damage |

Farosh Horn Shard is the single most valuable Farosh drop — Fuse it to a weapon for strong electric attacks.

Naydra — The Ice Dragon

Appearance: Blue with ice crystals and a colder, ethereal glow

Route: Naydra flies over the Lanayru/Mount Lanayru region in eastern Hyrule.

  • Circles around Mount Lanayru and the Spring of Wisdom
  • Also visible flying over Lake Floria on occasion
  • Best access: Spring of Wisdom near the summit of Mount Lanayru — Naydra flies very close

Time of day: Naydra is active around dusk and night.

Materials: | Part | Drop | Use | |------|------|-----| | Body | Naydra's Scale | Armor upgrades | | Claw | Naydra's Claw | Armor upgrades | | Fang | Naydra's Fang | Armor upgrades | | Horn | Naydra's Horn Shard | Best Fuse material — high ice damage |

Naydra's Horn Shard is ideal for Fusing to weapons used against fire-based enemies (Lizalfos, Death Mountain encounters).

Dinraal — The Fire Dragon

Appearance: Red with fire and smoke trailing behind

Route: Dinraal flies in northern Hyrule / Eldin region near Death Mountain.

  • Circles around the Eldin Mountains
  • Best access: cliffs above Eldin and the Akkala Citadel sky area
  • Eldin Great Skeleton area has clear sky access to Dinraal's route

Time of day: Dinraal is active around early morning and morning hours.

Materials: | Part | Drop | Use | |------|------|-----| | Body | Dinraal's Scale | Armor upgrades | | Claw | Dinraal's Claw | Armor upgrades | | Fang | Dinraal's Fang | Armor upgrades | | Horn | Dinraal's Horn Shard | Best Fuse material — high fire damage |

Dinraal's Fang is specifically used for the Ancient Armor upgrade chain — if upgrading Ancient Armor, Dinraal's Fang is required. Prioritize Fang collection from Dinraal.

Sella — The Light Dragon

Appearance: Massive golden-white dragon with a distinct glowing appearance

Route: Sella (the Light Dragon) flies an enormous circuit over all of Hyrule at high altitude.

  • Much higher than the other 3 dragons
  • Full circuit takes approximately 40-50 real-time minutes
  • Best accessed via sky islands at maximum altitude

Special: The Master Sword is embedded in Sella's forehead. Pulling the Master Sword from Sella requires a specific stamina check (2 full stamina wheels minimum). Once pulled, Sella no longer carries the sword.

Materials: | Part | Drop | Use | |------|------|-----| | Body | Sella's Scale | Armor upgrades — high demand | | Claw | Sella's Claw | Armor upgrades | | Fang | Sella's Fang | Armor upgrades | | Horn | Sella's Horn Shard | Best non-Master-Sword Fuse material |

Sella's materials are required for Royal Guard Uniform upgrade and several high-tier armor sets. They're the rarest dragon materials due to her sparse, high-altitude route.

Complete Dragon Flight Path Descriptions

Understanding each dragon's full route is critical for planning efficient farming sessions.

Farosh — Full Path Detail

Farosh's route is centered entirely in the south. The circuit runs roughly:

  1. Lake Hylia (emergence) — Farosh rises from the depths of Lake Hylia, often bursting upward from the water's surface at dawn. The lake is in central-south Hyrule.
  2. East shore of Lake Hylia — flies northeast along the lake edge before banking.
  3. Faron River valley — descends into the river gorge, flying low through the canyon.
  4. East Necluda coast — skirts the eastern coastline briefly.
  5. South Faron forests — sweeps through the Faron jungle zone at lower altitude.
  6. Return to Lake Hylia — the loop resets and repeats continuously.

Best access points:

  • Lake Hylia Tower — launch from the Skyview Tower above Lake Hylia, glide out to intercept Farosh as it rises.
  • Ya-Naga Shrine — located on a plateau above the lake's east bank; very close to Farosh's path.
  • Popla Foothills Skyview Tower — slightly to the east, useful for intercepting Farosh on the Faron leg.

Bullet time tip: Jump off the Lake Hylia Tower at dawn, enter bullet time (ZR while falling), and fire arrows downward at Farosh as it rises from the lake. This guarantees a shot on the horn if your aim is accurate.

Naydra — Full Path Detail

Naydra's route is entirely in eastern Hyrule:

  1. Mount Lanayru summit — Naydra circles the peak of Mount Lanayru tightly at high altitude.
  2. Spring of Wisdom — flies directly over the Spring of Wisdom near the summit. This is the closest approach.
  3. East Lanayru descent — swoops down toward the eastern shore areas of Lanayru.
  4. Lanayru Wetlands flyover — crosses over the wetlands heading south.
  5. Lake Floria area — sometimes dips as far south as Lake Floria before returning north.
  6. Return to Mount Lanayru — circles back to summit.

Best access points:

  • Spring of Wisdom — positioned near the summit of Mount Lanayru, Naydra flies directly overhead. This is the single best Naydra collection spot.
  • Mount Lanayru Skyview Tower — launch at dusk and glide to intercept Naydra on her summit pass.
  • Jochi-ihiga Shrine — near the Spring of Wisdom; rest here until night, then wait.

Hover approach: From the Spring of Wisdom, deploy the paraglider and ride the updraft, then hover in Naydra's path. She flies slowly enough that you can match altitude briefly with careful paraglider management.

Dinraal — Full Path Detail

Dinraal patrols the volcanic north:

  1. Eldin Great Skeleton — emerges from the Eldin Great Skeleton area in North Eldin.
  2. North Eldin ridge — flies along the spine of the Eldin mountain range heading northeast.
  3. Akkala Highlands sky — passes over the high Akkala region moving east.
  4. Akkala Sky Islands — clips through the sky island cluster above Akkala.
  5. Northeast ocean — sweeps out over the ocean briefly before banking.
  6. Return south along Eldin — loops back west and south to repeat.

Best access points:

  • Eldin Great Skeleton viewpoint — there's a ridge immediately above the Great Skeleton that puts you at Dinraal's flight altitude. Position here at dawn.
  • Akkala Skyview Tower — launch at morning and glide eastward; Dinraal often passes nearby.
  • Death Mountain Ridge sky islands — the sky islands north of Death Mountain are directly on Dinraal's path. Standing on these sky islands puts you at wing level.

Sky island intercept: Several sky islands north of Death Mountain sit at exactly Dinraal's altitude. Walk to the island's edge, wait for Dinraal to approach, then target the horn as it flies past. This is the highest-consistency method for Dinraal's Horn Shard.

Sella (Light Dragon) — Full Path Detail

Sella's path is unique — she flies over all of Hyrule at extreme altitude, far above any other dragon or most sky islands.

  1. Northwestern Hyrule — begins the circuit in the far northwest near Rito Village area.
  2. North Hyrule sweep — crosses the entire northern region including Eldin and Akkala at altitude.
  3. Eastern arc — flies along the eastern coast of Hyrule.
  4. Southeast Hyrule — passes over Necluda and Faron regions.
  5. Southwest return — sweeps through Gerudo and Lanayru before looping back.
  6. Full circuit time: ~40–50 minutes

Challenge: Sella flies at an altitude that most standard sky islands cannot reach. The highest sky islands in the central-north Hyrule cluster — particularly the North Hyrule Sky Archipelago islands — come closest to her altitude.

Best access methods:

  • Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower → high sky islands — launch from Ulri Mountain, chain ascents on sky island stacks in northeastern Hyrule.
  • Central Sky Island stacks — the tall sky island columns in North Hyrule can be climbed via Ascend (interact with underside of floating stone) to reach maximum altitude.
  • Bow range + elevation — even if not at exact altitude, you can shoot Sella from below with a powerful bow if she passes overhead. Aim sharply upward.

Height strategy: The most reliable Sella method is to find the tallest sky island stack in your current position, climb to the top, and wait for Sella's path to cross overhead. Her circuit brings her over most regions eventually — patience pays off.

How to Reach Each Body Part

Each dragon body part requires a different targeting approach. Understanding anatomy dramatically improves farming speed.

Body (Scale)

  • Location: Along the dragon's spine and flanks — the large flat sections of the body between the wings and tail.
  • How to hit from the ground: Any arrow shot at the midsection typically registers as a scale drop. The body is the largest target.
  • How to hit from above: If you've landed on the dragon, simply stand on the back and the scale appears automatically after a moment, or swing a weapon at the scales.
  • Difficulty: Easy — largest target, accessible from any angle.

Claw (Foot)

  • Location: The 4 legs/claws hanging below the dragon's body as it flies.
  • How to hit: Wait for the dragon to bank or turn — the claw extends outward during turns and is easier to target. Aim at the bright glowing sections on the underside limbs.
  • From above: If standing on the dragon, move toward one side and look down. Shoot an arrow downward at the visible claw below.
  • Difficulty: Moderate — smaller target, requires the dragon to be banked or below your position.

Fang (Snout)

  • Location: At the front of the dragon's head — the glowing fang area around the mouth and snout.
  • How to hit: Approach from the front or side-front. Aim at the bright glowing area near the mouth. Best done from a high vantage with the dragon approaching you.
  • Bullet time method: As the dragon flies toward you head-on, jump off a ledge, enter bullet time, and aim at the face for a direct fang shot.
  • Difficulty: Hard — the head is a fast-moving small target. Requires timing the dragon's approach precisely.

Horn Shard (Horn)

  • Location: The horn or horn cluster at the very top of the dragon's head — the highest point.
  • How to hit: The horn is the hardest target. Approach from directly above or position at the dragon's altitude and slightly ahead, then target the topmost point of the skull.
  • Best method: Launch from a Skyview Tower, ascend above the dragon's altitude, and fall alongside the dragon in bullet time. From above, the horn is clearly visible as the topmost target.
  • Hover method: Stand on a sky island as the dragon passes below. When its head is within range, aim straight down at the horn.
  • Difficulty: Very Hard — smallest target, requires altitude advantage. Worth the effort: Horn Shards have the highest Fuse value and the most upgrade demand.

Armor Upgrade Table — Dragon Materials Required

This table shows which armors require which dragon materials and at what upgrade tier.

Farosh Materials

| Armor Set | Piece | Upgrade | Farosh Material Needed | |-----------|-------|---------|----------------------| | Rubber Armor | All pieces | ★★ | Farosh's Scale ×1 | | Rubber Armor | All pieces | ★★★ | Farosh's Claw ×1 | | Rubber Armor | All pieces | ★★★★ | Farosh's Horn Shard ×1 | | Radiant Armor | Mask | ★★ | Farosh's Scale ×2 | | Radiant Armor | All pieces | ★★★ | Farosh's Claw ×2 | | Radiant Armor | All pieces | ★★★★ | Farosh's Horn Shard ×2 |

Naydra Materials

| Armor Set | Piece | Upgrade | Naydra Material Needed | |-----------|-------|---------|----------------------| | Snowquill Armor | All pieces | ★★★ | Naydra's Scale ×1 | | Snowquill Armor | All pieces | ★★★★ | Naydra's Claw ×1 | | Climber's Armor | All pieces | ★★★ | Naydra's Scale ×1 | | Climber's Armor | All pieces | ★★★★ | Naydra's Horn Shard ×1 | | Frostbite Armor | All pieces | ★★★ | Naydra's Claw ×1 | | Frostbite Armor | All pieces | ★★★★ | Naydra's Horn Shard ×1 |

Note: Sella's materials are required for the final upgrade tier of many sets. Because Sella is the hardest dragon to reach, plan Sella farming late in your upgrade progression — after fully upgrading sets that use the 3 easier dragons first.

Farming Priority Order

Not all dragon materials are equally valuable. Here's the recommended farming priority for most players:

Priority 1 — Farosh Horn Shards (Electric Weapon)

Farm Farosh's Horn Shard first. Electric damage is broadly useful — it stuns enemies, triggers environmental effects, and chain-damages wet or metallic targets. A Farosh Horn Shard fused to a two-handed weapon provides one of the best general-purpose combat setups.

Get at minimum: 3–5 Farosh Horn Shards early. Use 1 for Fuse, keep 2–3 for Rubber Armor upgrades.

Priority 2 — Dinraal Materials (Ancient Armor bottleneck)

Dinraal's Fang is required for Ancient Armor upgrades and is an ingredient bottleneck. If you plan to use the Ancient Hero's Aspect or any fire-region armor set, begin Dinraal farming early. Dinraal's scale and claw are also easy to collect on the same flight path visit.

Get at minimum: 5 Dinraal's Fangs for Ancient armor progress, plus 3 each of Scale/Claw for other sets.

Priority 3 — Naydra Horn Shards (Ice Weapon + Snow Armor)

Naydra Horn Shards for ice weapons are important for Eldin region and Goron-adjacent combat. The Snowquill and Frostbite armor sets also bottleneck on Naydra materials at ★★★★.

Get at minimum: 3 Naydra Horn Shards plus 5 Scales for Snowquill upgrades.

Priority 4 — Sella (Light Dragon) Materials (Late Game Only)

Farm Sella last. Her materials are only needed for final-tier (★★★★) upgrades on specific sets. You should have the rest of your armor infrastructure in place before dedicating time to Sella, because her altitude makes each collection session more involved.

When to start Sella farming: After you've completed ★★★ upgrades on your core armor sets and have identified which ★★★★ upgrades require Sella's materials specifically.

Efficient Dragon Farming Loop

For frequent collection:

  1. Identify the target dragon (which material do you need?)
  2. Travel to their region and find a high-altitude vantage
  3. Rest at a campfire until the correct time of day for that dragon
  4. Wait for the dragon to approach your vantage → shoot the target body part
  5. Collect the drop (scale/claw/fang/horn — it falls to the ground or hovers for collection)
  6. Fast travel to a distant shrine → fast travel back to reset the 10-minute timer
  7. Repeat

Horn Shard priority: Horn Shards are 3× more valuable than scales for weapon Fusing. Always target the horn unless you specifically need a scale for upgrades.

Two-dragon session: Farosh (dawn, south) and Naydra (dusk, east) can be farmed in the same play session by collecting one at dawn, then traveling to Lanayru for Naydra at dusk.

How to Farm the Light Dragon (Sella) — Detailed Method

Sella is the most difficult dragon to reach due to her extreme altitude. Use this method for consistent collection:

Step 1 — Locate Sella's Current Position

Open the map and look for Sella's icon. She appears as a large dragon symbol on the map once you've discovered her. Her position updates in real time.

Step 2 — Intercept at Maximum Sky Island Altitude

The most reliable access point is the North Hyrule Sky Archipelago — the large cluster of sky islands north and northwest of Hyrule Castle. These islands include stacked columns of rock that can be climbed using Ascend.

  1. Teleport to Nachoyah Shrine (Great Sky Island) or the highest accessible sky shrine in North Hyrule.
  2. Climb the tallest available sky island stack using Ascend on the underside of floating rocks.
  3. Reach the topmost platform — this should put you near 1,200–1,400 meters altitude.
  4. Look up and wait for Sella's shadow/glow to approach.

Step 3 — Launch and Intercept in Bullet Time

When Sella approaches directly overhead:

  1. Jump off the top of the sky island.
  2. Hold ZR to draw your bow.
  3. Aim upward at Sella's body as you fall.
  4. In bullet time, identify the horn (topmost bright point on Sella's skull) and fire.

Step 4 — Land on Sella (Optional — More Reliable)

If you time the approach from a sky island at similar altitude:

  1. As Sella flies past the sky island at similar height, jump and paraglide toward her body.
  2. Land on her back when close enough.
  3. Once on the dragon, shoot the horn from point-blank range — nearly impossible to miss.
  4. Collect the drop, then paraglide off back toward a sky island or toward the surface.

Step 5 — The Secret Stone Location

Sella's unique feature is the Secret Stone embedded in her forehead (underneath the Master Sword location). After the Master Sword is retrieved, a glowing stone remains on her head. This area is not an interactive item but is the story-significant detail that explains why Sella flies so high — she is a Sage's dragon and flies above Hyrule permanently.

Step 6 — 10-Minute Timer Reset

After collecting from Sella, the easiest timer reset is:

  1. Teleport to a shrine in the Depths (far from any surface shrine).
  2. Immediately teleport back to a surface shrine.
  3. The 10-minute window has been reset by the zone change.
  4. Return to your Sella intercept point and repeat.

Realistic Sella yield: With the sky island method, a skilled player can collect 4–6 Sella materials per hour. Horn Shards require patience — expect 1–2 per hour until you've mastered the bullet-time overhead shot.

Best Uses for Dragon Materials

| Material | Best Use | |---------|---------| | Any Horn Shard | Fuse to weapon — high elemental damage | | Farosh's Scale | Radiant Armor upgrade | | Naydra's Scale | Vah Medoh's ancient armor upgrade | | Dinraal's Fang | Ancient Armor upgrade (★★★ requires this) | | Sella's Scale | Royal Guard Uniform + final armor upgrades | | Any Scale/Claw/Fang | Sell surplus for rupees (each = 150-300 rupees) |

Quick Tips

  • Horn Shards for Fusing — every dragon's Horn Shard is a top-tier Fuse material. A Farosh Horn Shard on a two-hander deals significant electric damage. Naydra's adds ice. Prioritize horns over all other parts.
  • Time of day determines presence — wrong time of day = dragon isn't at the access point. Carry a campfire kit (flint + wood) to rest until the right time without finding a stable.
  • Sella's altitude — the Light Dragon flies so high that most sky islands can barely reach her. Find the highest sky islands in the game (or use Ascend from a tall surface) to get within arrow range.
  • 10-minute timer via fast travel — fast traveling to a distant shrine and back resets the 10-minute collection window. No need to actually wait — load a different area and return.
  • Master Sword timing — pull the Master Sword from Sella only after building 2 full stamina wheels. Before that, the sword cannot be pulled regardless of attempts.
  • Campfire rest shortcut — if you just missed a dragon (it passed the access point 5 minutes ago), rest at a campfire for 30 in-game minutes to advance time. This is faster than walking around waiting.
  • Drop falls to ground — after hitting a dragon, the material drop glows and falls toward the surface. Watch where it lands (the glow is visible from far away) and retrieve it before leaving the area. Scale drops close to the dragon's body can sometimes be picked up mid-air if you're still airborne nearby.
  • Multi-material farm per dragon — you cannot get two different parts from one session, but you can plan multiple sessions close together. The 10-minute cooldown per dragon means collecting Scale at 0:00, doing the fast-travel reset trick, and collecting Horn Shard at ~0:15 is viable in a single play session.
