How to Expand Inventory — More Weapon, Bow & Shield Slots in TotK
How to Expand Inventory — More Weapon, Bow & Shield Slots
TotK starts you with limited inventory slots: 8 weapons, 5 bows, 4 shields. This feels cramped immediately. Expanding requires Korok Seeds traded to Hestu, the large Korok NPC. Here's exactly how to do it.
Starting Inventory Slots
| Category | Starting Slots | Maximum Slots | |----------|---------------|--------------| | Weapons | 8 | 14 | | Bows | 5 | 14 | | Shields | 4 | 20 |
Maximum total weapon slots = 14. Shields max at 20 (more slots than weapons because shields are often situational).
How It Works — Hestu & Korok Seeds
Hestu is a giant Korok (the Kokiri forest spirits from Zelda lore) who upgrades your inventory in exchange for Korok Seeds — small yellow seeds hidden throughout Hyrule.
Each upgrade costs increasing numbers of seeds:
- First weapon slot: 1 seed
- Second weapon slot: 2 seeds
- Third weapon slot: 3 seeds
- Later upgrades: 5-10 seeds each
- Total to max all slots: approximately 440-450 seeds
Hestu Locations — Where to Find Him
Hestu appears in three locations throughout the game:
Location 1 — Lindor's Brow Road (Early Game)
Where: On the road south of Lookout Landing, heading toward the forest area (near Rito Village direction road) Approximate coordinates: -1775, 0593, 0085
This is where you first encounter Hestu. He's stuck on the road because his maracas were stolen. Find and return his maracas (in a chest nearby — look in the surrounding area) to unlock his services.
After returning the maracas, he offers inventory upgrades immediately.
Note: He moves after a certain number of upgrades — if he's not here, he's at the next location.
Location 2 — Near Korok Forest (Mid Game)
Where: In the Korok Forest / Lost Woods area, north-central Hyrule How to reach Korok Forest: Enter the Lost Woods (north of Hyrule Castle area) and navigate through the fog by following the leaf blows.
Hestu relocates here after you've used him a few times at his first location. He'll have a small dance/ceremony area here.
Location 3 — Tarrey Town (Permanent)
Where: Tarrey Town, northeast Hyrule (island in the northeast) How to unlock: Complete the Tarrey Town questline (multiple side quests involving Hudson)
Once the Tarrey Town quest is complete, Hestu permanently sets up near the town entrance and is always available here. This is his permanent endgame location.
Korok Seed Farming for Inventory Upgrades
You only need 440-450 seeds for maximum inventory — not all 1,000.
Efficient approach:
- Collect seeds naturally while exploring (you'll get 50-100 just playing)
- When you find Hestu, spend seeds on the cheapest upgrades first (weapons are most useful early)
- Farm specific areas if you need more (see below)
Quick Seed Farming Spots
Hyrule Field: Highest density on the surface — dozens of seeds within 1km of Lookout Landing Lookout Landing area: The immediate area around the starting outpost has 10-15 seeds Along roads: Koroks often hide near road signs, bridges, and waypoints
Korok Puzzle Quick Recognition
- Unusual rock on a ledge that looks out of place → pick it up
- Flower chain (one flower appears → interact → chain continues) → follow the chain
- Mismatched rock pattern → complete the pattern with Ultrahand
- Rustling in the ground → pick up the suspicious thing
Upgrade Priority — What to Expand First
1. Weapons First (Highest Priority)
Weapon slots run out fastest — you want to carry:
- 2-3 melee weapons of different attack levels
- 1-2 fused utility weapons (mining club, etc.)
- Emergency backups
Get to 10 weapon slots as quickly as possible.
2. Bows Second
5 bow slots is workable early. Upgrade to 8-10 when you start collecting different bow types.
3. Shields Last
4 shield slots is usually enough for most players. Shields break less often than weapons. Upgrade shields last.
Seeds Required Per Expansion Level
| Slots | Cumulative Seeds Needed | |-------|----------------------| | Weapons: 10 (from 8) | ~6-8 seeds | | Weapons: 14 (max) | ~35-45 seeds | | Bows: 10 (from 5) | ~25-30 seeds | | Bows: 14 (max) | ~55-70 seeds | | Shields: 10 (from 4) | ~30-40 seeds | | Shields: 20 (max) | ~150-180 seeds |
Note: Shield max is expensive (20 slots). Focus on weapons and bows first.
Tips for Inventory Management Before Upgrades
If you're early game with limited slots:
- Sell or drop low-value items: Don't carry Traveler's Swords (2 attack) — drop them
- Only carry fused weapons: An unfused weapon wastes a slot
- One dedicated mining weapon: Don't waste weapon slots on multiple mining clubs
- Leave unused bows behind: A Korok Leaf bow (0 attack) isn't worth a slot
