Fairy Guide — Where to Find Fairies & Auto-Revive Mechanic
Fairy Guide — Auto-Revive & Where to Find Them
Fairies in TotK serve two purposes: auto-revive (stored in your inventory, they revive you when you die) and cooking ingredient (boosts healing in recipes). They're the best insurance against sudden death. This guide covers where to find them and how the auto-revive system works.
The Auto-Revive Mechanic
How it works:
- Catch a fairy (it enters your ingredient inventory)
- If Link dies while a fairy is in inventory, the fairy automatically revives him with a few hearts
- The fairy is consumed on use — one fairy = one revive
- If you have multiple fairies, each death consumes one
Revive amount: Usually 3-5 hearts restored on auto-revive (not full heal, but enough to survive the hit that killed you).
Priority: Fairies are the best insurance in the game. Always carry at least 2-3. If you're heading into a tough fight (Lynel, boss), stock 5+.
Catching Fairies
Fairies flee when Link approaches. They sense movement:
How to catch:
- Crouch (ZL) when you see a fairy — crouch walking is slower but quiet
- Approach slowly from behind or from the side
- The fairy's glow pulses — it will fly away the instant it detects you
- Interact (A) to catch when within range
Equip Stealth Armor or drink Sneaky Elixir before fairy hunting — the reduced detection radius lets you get much closer before they flee.
Sneak attack not possible — Fairies can't be hit with weapons to catch; you must manually interact.
Where Fairies Spawn
Fairies appear at specific locations, primarily at night but sometimes during the day:
Great Fairy Fountain Areas
The area immediately around each Great Fairy Fountain always has fairy spawns:
- Fairies spawn in the grass and water near the fountain
- The fountain itself doesn't need to be unlocked — fairies spawn around the sealed flower bud too
- 4 Great Fairy Fountain locations: Woodland, Akkala, Eldin, Necluda (see Great Fairy Guide)
Forest Clearings
Multiple forest areas across Hyrule have consistent fairy spawns:
- Faron Forest (south Hyrule) — clearing with soft lights at night
- Necluda forest patches east of Kakariko — 2-4 fairies per spawn
- Korok Forest vicinity — fairies near the fairy lights in the woods
Near Water at Night
Small ponds and pools in quiet areas sometimes have fairy spawns at night:
- Lake Hylia south shore (small pools)
- Lanayru springs
- Any quiet meadow pond
Stable Areas (Sometimes)
Some stables have fairy spawns in the grass nearby at night — inconsistent but worth checking.
Fairies at Great Fairy Fountains
The most reliable fairy source is the Great Fairy Fountain area:
Fountain: Cotera (Necluda — Dueling Peaks area)
- 3-5 fairies in the clearing around the fountain
- Accessible early game — one of the first Great Fairy areas reachable
- Night spawns more consistent than daytime
Fountain: Kaysa (Woodland — Korok Forest area)
- 3-4 fairies in the meadow surrounding the fountain
- Near Woodland Stable — stop here each time you pass through
Fountain: Mija (Akkala — northeast)
- 2-3 fairies in the clearing
- More remote but worth collecting on Akkala circuits
Fountain: Tera (Gerudo — southwest)
- 2-3 fairies in the desert-adjacent fountain area
- Combine with Gerudo exploration
Cooking With Fairies
Fairies can be cooked as ingredients:
Effect when cooked:
- Adding a Fairy to any recipe dramatically boosts the heart restoration (adds bonus hearts)
- A single fairy cooked with other ingredients can push a meal to full heart restoration
- Best use: Fairy + 4× Endura Carrot (or any high-value food) = maximum-heart + maximum-endura meal
Recommendation: DON'T cook fairies unless you have 10+ in inventory. The auto-revive value is too important to cook away unless you're stockpiling.
Fairy vs Other Revive Options
| Revive Method | Hearts Restored | Conditions | |--------------|----------------|------------| | Fairy (auto) | 3-5 hearts | Automatic on death | | Fairy (manual cooking) | Full + bonus | Must eat before dying | | Recovery Heart | 1 heart | Active eat required | | Endura meal | Max + bonus stamina | Active eat required |
Fairy advantage: The auto-revive fires even if you can't react — including when killed by a one-shot attack. No other mechanic does this. The value is the automatic nature.
Quick Tips
- Always carry 3+ fairies — the cost of catching them is minimal (5 minutes of sneaking), and the benefit (free revive from death) is enormous. Never let your fairy count drop to 0.
- Fairy stock before boss fights — before any temple boss or Lynel encounter, top up to 5+ fairies. One fairy = one death forgiven.
- Stealth Armor for hunting — equip Stealth Armor before approaching fairy spawns. Without it, you'll spook them from too far away.
- Night circuit — add a "fairy collecting" stop to your nighttime routine. Great Fairy Fountain areas respawn fairies after Blood Moon. Check them regularly.
- Fairies respawn on Blood Moon — like critters, fairies reset on Blood Moon. If you cleared a fountain area, it repopulates.
- Don't cook them carelessly — fairies in cooking are useful but auto-revive is more important. Only cook fairies if you're flush with 10+ and want max-stat meals.
