Food Effects Guide: Every Buff and How to Cook It
Food buffs in Tears of the Kingdom are temporary stat boosts that can make the difference between surviving and failing a difficult fight or environmental challenge. This guide covers every possible food effect, how to cook it, and the most efficient recipes.
How Food Effects Work
When you cook meals with specific effect ingredients, the food gains a stat buff. The strength (1, 2, or 3 stars) and duration depend on:
- How many effect ingredients you use (more = stronger)
- The type of ingredients (some grant longer duration per unit)
- Whether you mix compatible ingredients (don't mix two different effect types)
Complete Effects List

- Best recipe: 5× Mighty Bananas = Attack Up Level 3, ~8 min duration
- Use: Before every difficult boss fight
Defense Up (Tough)
Reduces incoming damage by approximately 10-30%
- Ingredients: Ironshroom, Rugged Rhino Beetle, Fortified Pumpkin, Armored Carp
- Best recipe: 5× Ironshrooms = Defense Up Level 3, ~8 min duration

Speed Up (Hasty)
Increases movement speed
- Ingredients: Fleet-Lotus Seeds, Hot-Footed Frog, Swift Carrot, Swift Violet

- Best recipe: 5× Blue Nightshade = Stealth Up Level 3

Heat Resistance (Fireproof / Spicy)
Protects against hot and cold environments
- Cold resistance: Spicy Pepper, Sunshroom, Warm Safflina
- Heat resistance: Fireproof Lizard (elixir only), Smotherwing Butterfly (elixir only)
- Note: Heat resistance (Fireproof) requires elixirs, not food — Fireproof Lizard + any monster part
- Best recipes: 5× Sunshrooms for cold; Fireproof Lizard + 4 monster parts for heat
Electricity Resistance (Electro)
Negates damage from lightning and electricity
- Ingredients: Voltfin Trout, Zapshroom, Yellow Chuchu Jelly (don't cook, causes shock), Thunderwing Butterfly (elixir)
- Best recipe: 5× Voltfin Trout = Electro Level 3
- Use: Thunder Gleeok fights, Akkala region thunderstorms
Swim Speed Up (Energizing Salmon)
Increases swimming speed and underwater movement
- Ingredients: Staminoka Bass, Hyrule Bass (stamina recovery, not swim speed), Bright-Eyed Crab
- Use: Zora's Domain waterway traversal
Hearty / Extra Hearts
Grants yellow bonus hearts beyond maximum
- Ingredients: Hearty Durian, Hearty Radish, Hearty Bass, Hearty Salmon, Hearty Truffle
- Best recipe: 5× Hearty Durian = ~20 bonus hearts (overpowered, especially early game)
- Use: Before any boss fight you're unsure about
Enduring Stamina
Grants yellow stamina wheels beyond maximum
- Ingredients: Endura Carrot, Endura Shroom
- Best recipe: 5× Endura Carrots = large temporary stamina pool
- Use: Climbing the Light Dragon to pull Master Sword
Timing Tips
- Food buffs don't carry over between deaths — cook before each attempt
- Some buffs (Attack, Defense) are measurably more impactful per second than others
- Stack duration by using 5 high-duration ingredients — some recipes give 15+ minute buffs
- Keep a variety of food types in different quick-select slots

Effect Stacking and Mixing Rules
Single-effect cooking: Use only one effect type per pot for maximum efficiency. Mixing two different effect types (e.g., Mighty Banana + Ironshroom) produces a "mixed" meal that receives the weaker of the two effects, not both.
Effect strength formula:
- 1 effect ingredient = 1★, short duration (~1-3 minutes)
- 2-3 effect ingredients = 2★, medium duration (~5-8 minutes)
- 4-5 effect ingredients = 3★, long duration (~10-17 minutes)
Duration extension: Some ingredients have inherently longer duration per unit (Mighty Bananas, Swift Carrots, Ironshrooms) compared to others (critters used in elixirs). The 5-ingredient max recipe is always 5× of the same ingredient for maximum level and duration.
Elixirs vs. Meals — When to Use Each
Elixirs (monster part + critter combination) are the only way to access several effects that food cannot provide:
| Effect | Meal Possible? | Elixir Required? | |--------|---------------|-----------------| | Fireproof | ❌ No — food only provides cold resist | ✅ Yes — Fireproof Lizard + any monster part | | Sticky (slip resist on wet surfaces) | ❌ No | ✅ Yes — Sticky Frog + part | | Hasty (maximum speed) | ✅ Yes (Swift Carrot) | ✅ Yes (Hot-Footed Frog elixir — higher speed tier) | | Tough (defense) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (Rugged Rhino Beetle) | | Mighty (attack) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (Lynel Guts elixir — highest ATK tier) |
Lynel Guts elixir: A Lynel Gut + any critter (Monarch Butterfly, Fairy) creates an Attack Up elixir that provides one of the highest possible damage boosts. The elixir form is stronger than the food form of Attack Up for the single-ingredient investment required.
Priority Recipes — Meta Loadout
The statistically optimal food loadout for difficult content:
Pre-Boss
- Hearty Durian × 5 → Full hearts + 20 bonus hearts. Cook 2-3 of these.
- Mighty Banana × 4 + Lynel Guts × 1 → Attack Up 3★, ~12 min
- Sundelion × 5 → Gloom recovery for Depths bosses (optional, situational)
Depths Exploration
- Ironshroom × 5 → Defense Up 3★, ~17 min
- Endura Carrot × 3 + Sunshroom × 2 → Extended stamina + partial cold resist
- Portable Pot in inventory for emergency Hearty cooking mid-run
Environmental Challenges
| Environment | Best Food | |-------------|----------| | Eldin Volcano (heat) | Fireproof Elixir × 3 (Fireproof Lizard + Smotherwing Butterfly + monster part) | | Lanayru/Hebra cold zones | Spicy Pepper × 5 or Warm Safflina × 5 | | Akkala thunderstorms | Voltfin Trout × 5 or Zapshroom × 5 | | Gerudo desert (heat) | Chilly Elixir (cold critter + monster part) | | Depths (Gloom) | Sunny Meal (Sundelion × 5 for best Gloom recovery) |
Critical Success Cooking
Every meal has a chance to achieve Critical Success — a random upgrade that adds:
- Extra duration to the buff
- Extra hearts if it's a healing meal
- Extra bonus hearts if it's a Hearty meal
Critical Success chance is normally ~15-20% per cook. On Blood Moon, every meal achieves Critical Success automatically. The most efficient cooking strategy for all buff types is to wait for Blood Moon, then bulk-cook your weekly supply of high-priority meals.
Best Blood Moon cooks:
- 5× Hearty Radish → Full + 10 bonus hearts (guaranteed max duration on Blood Moon)
- 5× Mighty Banana → Attack Up 3★ + extra duration
- 5× Ironshroom → Defense Up 3★ + extra duration
