Gerudo Lightning Temple Guide — Full Walkthrough with Riju

The Lightning Temple is one of Tears of the Kingdom's five major temples, located deep beneath the Gerudo Desert. You tackle it alongside Riju, whose lightning ability is essential for solving the temple's pillar puzzles and defeating the boss. This guide walks through every floor, puzzle, and the Queen Gibdo boss fight.

Prerequisites

Before entering the Lightning Temple:

  • Complete "Riju of Gerudo Town" main quest — this recruits Riju as your companion
  • Bring heat resistance — the Gerudo Desert is scorching during the day. Wear the Desert Voe armor set or eat heat-resistant food
  • Stock arrows (40+) — you need arrows to activate Riju's lightning strikes throughout the temple
  • Bring food — Hearty meals for the boss fight; Sundelion meals if venturing through Gloom areas
  • Hydro Melon or Chillshroom meals — supplementary heat resistance for extended desert travel to the temple entrance

Reaching the Temple

Travel to Gerudo Town and follow Riju's quest marker into the desert. The path leads to a sand-covered entrance that descends underground. Riju accompanies you automatically once the quest is active.

Riju's Lightning Ability

Riju creates a circular lightning zone around Link when activated. To use it:

  1. Press A near Riju to summon her lightning field (glowing circle appears around Link)
  2. Shoot an arrow at any target within the circle — lightning strikes the arrow's impact point
  3. The lightning strike deals massive damage to enemies and activates lightning-conductive pillars

Tip: Riju's lightning field lasts approximately 8 seconds. Activate it, then immediately aim and fire your arrow. Do not wait — the window is tight.

Lightning Pillar Mechanic

The temple's core puzzle involves battery pillars — tall conductive columns that power mechanisms when struck by Riju's lightning. Each floor has multiple pillars that must be activated to open doors, raise platforms, and progress deeper into the temple.

Floor-by-Floor Walkthrough

Floor 1 — Entry Hall

After descending into the temple, you enter a large chamber with Gibdo enemies and a central locked door.

  1. Clear the Gibdo enemies. Use Riju's lightning on them — one strike kills standard Gibdos. Shoot an arrow at a Gibdo while Riju's field is active.
  2. Find the first battery pillar on the left side of the room. Activate Riju's lightning, shoot the pillar. It glows and powers the door mechanism.
  3. The central door opens. Proceed to Floor 2.

Tip: Gibdos are vulnerable to elemental damage. Without Riju's lightning, fire arrows and bomb arrows also work, but lightning is by far the most efficient.

Floor 2 — The Pillar Room

A large multi-level room with several battery pillars visible at different heights.

  1. Ground level pillar: Directly ahead. Activate with Riju's lightning.
  2. Raised platform pillar: Use Ascend to reach the platform above, then activate the pillar from the elevated position. You need line-of-sight to the pillar for your arrow.
  3. Hidden pillar: Behind a breakable wall on the east side. Use a bomb flower or weapon to break the wall, revealing the pillar. Activate it.
  4. A door opens leading to a side chamber with a chest containing a Strong Construct Bow.

Floor 3 — The Mirror Room

This floor introduces reflective surfaces that redirect light beams.

  1. Locate the light source — a beam of sunlight entering from above through a gap in the ceiling
  2. Use Ultrahand to rotate mirror panels, directing the light beam to hit a sun emblem on the far wall
  3. When the emblem is illuminated, a platform rises revealing another battery pillar
  4. Activate the pillar with Riju's lightning to open the way forward

Tip: Some mirrors are stuck and need to be freed with Ultrahand first. Grab them, wiggle them loose, then position them in the light path.

Floor 4 — The Sand Flow Chamber

Sand flows through channels in this room, carrying debris and blocking paths.

  1. Use Recall on sand debris to create temporary platforms across the sand flow
  2. Cross to the far side using the Recall-frozen debris as stepping stones
  3. Two battery pillars are on opposite sides of the room. Activate both — this requires positioning Riju's field carefully for each
  4. A central pillar rises from the floor. Activate it to open the boss door below.

Floor 5 — Pre-Boss Chamber

A quiet room before the boss. Contains:

  • A cooking pot (cook your combat meals here)
  • A chest with arrows
  • A Goddess Statue for last-minute heart/stamina prayers

Tip: Cook Hearty Durian meals (5x Hearty Durian = full heal + 20 bonus hearts) before proceeding. The boss fight has multiple phases.

Boss Fight: Queen Gibdo

Queen Gibdo is a massive insectoid boss with two distinct phases.

Phase 1 — Arena Floor

Queen Gibdo's attacks:

  • Charge rush: She charges directly at Link at high speed. Dodge sideways.
  • Sand beam: A focused beam of sand fired in a sweeping arc. Sprint perpendicular to the beam direction.
  • Gibdo spawn: She summons standard Gibdo enemies as reinforcements.

Strategy:

  1. Activate Riju's lightning field
  2. Shoot Queen Gibdo with an arrow while the field is active — the lightning strike strips her armor temporarily, revealing her vulnerable white body
  3. Rush in and melee attack the exposed body. You have approximately 5-6 seconds before the armor regenerates
  4. Repeat 3-4 times to deplete her first health bar

Tip: Clear Gibdo reinforcements quickly — they distract and deal significant damage if ignored. One Riju lightning arrow kills standard Gibdos instantly.

Phase 2 — Elevated Hive

Queen Gibdo flies to pillars around the arena perimeter. Her attacks become more aggressive:

  • Dive bomb: She swoops down from a pillar at high speed. Time a dodge for Flurry Rush opportunity.
  • Egg sacs: She lays egg sacs on the ground that hatch into Gibdos after 10 seconds. Destroy them immediately with arrows or melee.
  • Enhanced sand beam: Wider arc, faster sweep. Jump over or Ascend to avoid.

Strategy:

  1. Activate battery pillars around the arena edge. Each pillar, when struck by Riju's lightning, damages Queen Gibdo if she is perched on or near it
  2. When she is grounded after a pillar shock, apply Riju lightning + arrow to strip armor, then melee the exposed body
  3. Destroy egg sacs immediately — being overwhelmed by hatched Gibdos while fighting the Queen is the most common cause of death
  4. Repeat until defeated

Post-Boss

After defeating Queen Gibdo:

  • A Heart Container drops
  • Riju becomes the Lightning Sage — her lightning ability is now permanently available as a companion power
  • A cutscene plays revealing Riju's Secret Stone awakening
  • You are returned to the desert surface

Lightning Sage — Riju's Permanent Ability

After completing the temple, Riju's lightning field is available anywhere in Hyrule:

  • Activate by pressing A near Riju's avatar
  • Shoot any arrow to call lightning on the impact point
  • Cooldown: Approximately 30 seconds after each use
  • Combat applications: Instant Gibdo kills, metal weapon conductivity, water surface chain-stun, excellent crowd control

Tip: Riju's lightning is the best crowd-control Sage ability. Use it against any group of enemies standing in water or near metal objects for devastating chain lightning effects.
