Overview

The four Great Fairy Fountains in Tears of the Kingdom are essential for upgrading armor sets. Unlike Breath of the Wild, each Great Fairy in TotK is sealed in her bud and won't open until Link brings a specific musician from the Stable Trotters traveling band to perform for her. This guide covers the exact unlock sequence, the location of each fairy and musician, and the most efficient order to tackle them.

Why Unlock Order Matters

Each subsequent Great Fairy costs more Rupees to unlock:

| Fairy | Name | Unlock Cost | |-------|------|------------| | 1st | Malanya (Horse God) — separate | N/A | | 1st Fairy | Cotera | 500 Rupees | | 2nd Fairy | Mija | 1,000 Rupees | | 3rd Fairy | Kaysa | 5,000 Rupees | | 4th Fairy | Tera | 10,000 Rupees |

Starting with the cheapest fairy and working toward the most expensive is strongly recommended. You also need a horse and cart to transport musicians — the Trotters won't travel on foot.

Step-by-Step Unlock Order

Step 1 — Cotera (Kakariko Village Area)

Location: Just north of Kakariko Village near Ta'loh Naeg Shrine (coordinates 1770, -1012, 0178).

Musician to find: Mastro, the conductor of the Stable Trotters. He is at Woodland Stable north of Hyrule Castle.

Process: Speak with Mastro at Woodland Stable, then use a horse and cart to escort him to Cotera's fountain. He will gather the band automatically. Cost: 500 Rupees.

Cotera is the easiest and cheapest, making her the natural first target. Unlocking her immediately enables 1-star and 2-star armor upgrades.

Step 2 — Mija (Akkala Region)

Location: Northeast Akkala near the Woodland Stable area, accessible via the road northeast of Foothill Stable (coordinates 3993, 2764, 0173).

Musician to find: Beetz, found riding his horse on the road near Snowfield Stable or the path north of Eldin. He sometimes spawns near Foothill Stable.

Process: Convince Beetz to join by speaking with him on the road — he requires some persuasion. Escort him by horse to Mija's bud. Cost: 1,000 Rupees.

Step 3 — Kaysa (Tabantha Region)

Location: West of Tabantha Bridge Stable, near the Piper Ridge cliffs (coordinates -3623, 1458, 0372).

Musician to find: Pyper, found near Wetland Stable or sometimes at the road south of Rito Village.

Process: Pyper will ask for a favor involving fireflies before agreeing to come. Collect the required Sunset Fireflies at night (they glow near rivers and forests), then escort him to Kaysa. Cost: 5,000 Rupees.

Step 4 — Tera (Gerudo Desert)

Location: Deep in the Gerudo Desert south of the Sand-Shroud (coordinates -3888, -3679, 0028). Requires sandstorm navigation.

Musician to find: Haite, found at Kara Kara Bazaar or the road approaching Gerudo Town.

Process: The desert crossing is the main challenge here — use the Voe armor or heat-resistant food to survive. Escort Haite across the sand to Tera's bud. Cost: 10,000 Rupees.

Tips

  • Build or find a stable cart before starting the Great Fairy quest chain — musicians will not walk
  • The 10,000 Rupee cost for Tera requires farming; ore deposits, Talus hearts, and Poes are reliable income sources
  • Unlocking all four fairies enables 4-star armor upgrades — the maximum tier
  • Great Fairies upgrade armor in exchange for monster parts and materials, not Rupees
  • Cotera near Kakariko is also close to several shrines, making the first trip very efficient

Armor Upgrade Material Requirements

Great Fairies upgrade armor in exchange for materials (not Rupees). Here's what the upgrade tiers generally require:

| Star Level | Cost Range | Typical Materials | |-----------|-----------|------------------| | 1★ | 10–50R | Common drops (Amber, Bokoblin Horn, basic food) | | 2★ | 50–150R | Mid-tier drops (Lizalfos Tails, Opal, Silver material) | | 3★ | 150–300R | High-tier drops (Ruby, Sapphire, Lynel Guts) | | 4★ | 300–500R + rare | Top-tier drops (Diamond, Lynel Saber Horn, Silver enemy parts) |

Note: Rupee costs above are for the Great Fairy's service fee on top of the material cost. The material type varies by armor set — check your specific armor set's upgrade list in inventory.

Where to Farm Upgrade Materials

| Material | Source | Region | |----------|--------|--------| | Lizalfos Tails (elemental) | Lizalfos in water, lava, or thunder zones | Multiple regions | | Lynel Guts / Horn | Blue-maned or Silver Lynel | Colosseum Ruins (Depths), Lanayru | | Ruby / Sapphire / Diamond | Ore nodes, Talus drops | Eldin, Lanayru, Depths | | Gibdo Bone | Gibdo swarms | Gerudo Desert, Lightning Temple area | | Silver Moblin Horn | Silver Moblins | Depths combat zones | | Star Fragment | Stalnox (first kill), night sky falls | Depths, random surface |

Efficiency note: For 3★ and 4★ upgrades, the material cost often exceeds the Rupee fee as the binding constraint. Mine Eldin ore for Rubies and kill Silver Lynels in the Depths Colosseum to unblock high-tier upgrades.

Stable Cart — Where to Get One

Musicians won't travel on foot — you need a cart and horse to escort each one. Options:

  1. Build one: Ultrahand + two wagon wheels + a platform slab = functional cart. Wheels drop from Bokoblin camps and Zonai dispensers.
  2. Find one: Pre-built carts are available near several stables — Riverside Stable and Woodland Stable both have carts parked nearby.
  3. Borrow from Stable Trotters: The band sometimes has a cart already — check their location when you find them.

Horse requirement: A registered horse from any stable works. The cart attaches to the horse with Ultrahand.

Rupee Farming for Tera (10,000R)

The 10,000 Rupee cost for the fourth fairy (Tera) is the largest single expense in TotK outside of combat gear. Fastest legitimate farming:

| Method | Rupees per Hour | Effort | |--------|----------------|--------| | Sell Diamonds to Hagie (Tarrey Town) | 600R per Diamond | Medium (farming Talus) | | Luminous Stone mining (Depths) | 800–1,500R per run | High | | Lynel farming (parts sale) | 1,000–2,000R per run | Hard | | Poe exchange (Bargainer Statues) | Slow but passive | Easy | | Bokoblin Base clearing | 200–400R per camp | Easy |

Recommended path: Complete Tarrey Town's Hagie questline first (30R per Amber vs. 10R elsewhere), then run 5–6 Stone Talus encounters — each drops 2–3 ore, with Diamond possible. 3 hours of active farming covers the Tera cost.

Musician Quest Details — What Each Requires

Each musician has a specific condition for agreeing to come:

Mastro (Conductor) — Woodland Stable

Mastro is the easiest. He's waiting at Woodland Stable, already hoping to reconnect with the Great Fairies. No special conditions — speak to him, he agrees immediately. You need to bring a horse with a cart (find a cart at any stable and attach your horse). Mastro will ride the cart to Cotera's location.

Cart location tip: Woodland Stable has a cart near the stable building itself. Hook your horse, drive to Cotera (8 minutes from Woodland Stable by cart on the road north of Kakariko).

Beetz — Road Near Eldin

Beetz rides a horse of his own and is found on the road between Foothill Stable and the Eldin Canyon area. He's not at any stable — you have to encounter him on the road. He will only agree to come if Link demonstrates interest in music (select the right dialogue options). No item requirements.

Finding Beetz: He patrols the road segment north of Foothill Stable, heading toward and away from the Eldin Canyon area. If he's not visible, fast travel to Foothill Stable and check the road heading northeast. Time of day doesn't affect his spawn.

Pyper — Wetland Stable Area

Pyper's condition is specific: he wants to see a Sunset Firefly. These only spawn at night near rivers and forests. You must show him a Sunset Firefly in your inventory — catch at least one before approaching him.

Sunset Firefly locations: The meadows south of Hyrule Castle moat and the forest areas near Kokomo Pond (west Hyrule) have reliable firefly spawns after 8 PM game time. Catch 3-4 as backup.

After showing the firefly, Pyper agrees. Escort him by cart from his location near Wetland Stable west to Kaysa (near Piper Ridge in Tabantha). The route involves some rough terrain — the cart can handle it, but go slowly on steep sections.

Haite — Kara Kara Bazaar

Haite is at Kara Kara Bazaar, the desert oasis settlement on the way to Gerudo Town. He's enthusiastic and agrees quickly — the challenge is the journey to Tera's location, not Haite himself.

The sandstorm: Tera's fountain is south of the Gerudo Sand-Shroud — a region of blinding sandstorm that reduces visibility to near-zero. You need either:

  • A Sand Seal escort service (hire at Gerudo Town) that provides a shield against the sand
  • Desert Voe armor set for heat protection (required even if you navigate by compass)
  • A pre-planned route using the compass bearing from Kara Kara Bazaar

The route without a sand seal: head south-southwest from Kara Kara Bazaar on compass. The fountain is at approximately -3888, -3679. Navigate by mini-map rather than visual landmarks — you can't see them.

Upgrade Tiers — What Each Fairy Unlocks

Unlocking multiple fairies is required to access higher upgrade tiers:

| # Fairies Unlocked | Max Upgrade Tier | Defense Range | |-------------------|-----------------|--------------| | 1 | 1★ and 2★ | Low to medium | | 2 | 3★ | Medium-high | | 3 | 4★ | Maximum tier | | 4 | 4★ (all fairies do all tiers) | Same as 3 fairies — redundancy |

Critical point: Unlocking 3 fairies enables 4★ upgrades — you don't need the 4th fairy for maximum armor power. Tera (10,000 Rupees) is optional for players who prioritize efficiency over completion.

Upgrade Material Budget — Common Requirements

Great Fairy upgrades consume materials, not Rupees. The most common upgrade materials by tier:

| Tier | Typical Requirements | |------|---------------------| | 1★ | Common monster parts (Bokoblin Horns, Amber), low quantity | | 2★ | Mid-tier parts (Lizalfos Tails, Opal), moderate quantity | | 3★ | High-tier parts (Lynel Mane, Sapphire, Ruby), significant quantity | | 4★ | Rare parts (Lynel Guts, Blue-Maned Lynel mats, Diamond), substantial quantity |

Priority upgrades: The Climbing Set (3-piece) and Archaic Set upgrades are relatively cheap. The Fierce Deity Set (endgame) requires Lynel parts in bulk at 3★ and 4★. Plan your Lynel farming around which armor sets you want maxed.

Rupee Farming for Tera

If targeting all four fairies, you need 16,500 total Rupees (500+1000+5000+10000). Fastest accumulation methods:

  1. Tarrey Town gem selling: Sell Diamonds to Hagie at 600R each. 25 Diamonds = 15,000R.
  2. Talus farming: Each Talus Heart sells for 200R. 80+ Talus Hearts from a full map clear = 16,000R.
  3. Lynel materials + weapon selling: Silver Lynel drops (Lynel Mane, Guts, Hoof) sell for 100-180R each. 3 Lynels per Blood Moon = 600-900R per cycle.
  4. Poe exchange: Convert Poes to Crystallized Charges at Bargainer Statues. Sell Crystallized Large Charges at 100R each.

The 10,000R for Tera specifically is achievable in a single focused 2-hour session of Depths Poe farming combined with gem selling.

Malanya — The Horse God

Malanya is sometimes confused with the Great Fairies but is a separate entity. She's the goddess of horses, found near the Bloodleaf Lake stable area. She:

  • Does not upgrade armor
  • Does not require a musician
  • Revives dead horses for a fee (Rupees + Swift Carrot offering)
  • Is worth unlocking if you use horses frequently — dead horses can otherwise only be replaced by taming new ones

Malanya's fountain is in a distinct visual style from the Great Fairy fountains (darker, purple-toned). Cost to unlock: 1,000 Rupees.
