Hearts vs. Stamina Guide — Which to Upgrade First in TotK
Hearts vs. Stamina Guide — Optimal Upgrade Strategy
Every 4 Spirit Orbs (from completing 4 shrines) = 1 upgrade at a Goddess Statue. You choose: +1 Heart Container or +1/5 Stamina Vessel. This is one of the most impactful ongoing decisions in TotK. This guide breaks down the optimal upgrade path.
How Upgrades Work
Spirit Orbs: Each shrine gives 1 orb. 4 orbs = 1 upgrade at a Goddess Statue.
Goddess Statue locations:
- Lookout Landing (accessible from tutorial)
- Temple of Time (Great Sky Island)
- All major towns and stables
- Lake Hylia, various field locations
Exchange:
- 4 orbs → +1 Heart Container (1 full heart of HP)
- 4 orbs → +1 Stamina Vessel (1/5 wheel of stamina; 5 vessels = 1 full wheel)
Starting stats:
- 3 Heart Containers (base)
- 1 full stamina wheel (base)
Maximum stats:
- 40 Heart Containers (requires 152 shrines = 38 upgrades)
- 3 full stamina wheels (requires 40 vessel upgrades = 8 more hearts' worth)
- You cannot max both — total 152 shrines gives 38 upgrades; maxing both requires 38+40=78 upgrades
The Golden Number — 3 Stamina Wheels
Three full stamina wheels is the functional maximum for most activities:
- Climbing Death Mountain (requires ~2.5 wheels without food)
- Pulling the Master Sword from the Light Dragon (requires 2+ full wheels or Enduring food)
- Paragliding long distances
- Sustained swimming in Lanayru
Once you hit 3 wheels: Marginal stamina gains are minimal. Switch fully to hearts.
Hearts — Key Thresholds
7 hearts: Minimum to survive most mid-game encounters 10+ hearts: Safe for most non-boss fights 20+ hearts: Boss fights become much more forgiving 30+ hearts: Depths Gloom has much larger buffer
Critical requirement:
- Some sources indicate you need a certain number of hearts before certain story events progress (narrative gates). There's no hard heart requirement for most content, but having fewer than 10 hearts in the Master Sword pulls fight makes it extremely risky.
Recommended Upgrade Order
Phase 1 — Early Game (0-20 shrines)
Priority: Balanced, slight stamina lean
Suggested order:
- Orbs 1-4 → Stamina Vessel (get to 1.2 wheels)
- Orbs 5-8 → Heart Container
- Orbs 9-12 → Stamina Vessel
- Orbs 13-16 → Heart Container
- Continue alternating
Why: Early game needs both survivability (hearts) and mobility (stamina for climbing).
Phase 2 — Mid Game (20-60 shrines)
Priority: Push toward 2 full stamina wheels
Once you reach ~16 shrines done (4 full wheels worth including start):
- Focus on stamina to reach 2 full wheels faster
- 2 wheels is the threshold for most mountain climbing without food
Suggested order:
- Every 3 upgrades: 2 stamina, 1 heart
- Continue until 2 full wheels
Phase 3 — Before Master Sword Pull
Priority: Reach 2+ full stamina wheels or use Enduring food
Pulling the Master Sword from the Light Dragon requires sustained stamina. Two options:
- Natural: Get 2+ full stamina wheels before attempting the pull
- Food method: Cook 5x Endura Carrot → eat before pull → enduring stamina buffer extends beyond your wheel cap
If using the food method, you can pull the Master Sword with just 1 full stamina wheel if you cook 5x Endura Carrot beforehand.
Phase 4 — Late Game (60+ shrines)
Priority: Hearts heavily
Once you have 2+ stamina wheels:
- Switch to 100% hearts investment
- Work toward 20+ hearts
- At 30+ hearts you can absorb Gloom damage without immediately being in danger
Horned Statue — Swap Hearts/Stamina
Location: In Lookout Landing basement / well area
The Horned Statue allows you to sell back upgrades and rebuy different ones:
- Sell 1 Heart Container → receive 100 Rupees
- Sell 1 Stamina Vessel → receive 100 Rupees
- Buy 1 Heart Container for 120 Rupees
- Buy 1 Stamina Vessel for 120 Rupees
Net cost to swap: 20 Rupees per upgrade (sell 1, buy 1 different type)
Best use:
- If you heavily invested in stamina early and now want hearts: visit Horned Statue, sell 5 stamina vessels (500R), buy 5 heart containers (600R) = net 100R cost per 5 stat swaps
- Temporary stamina boost: sell 2 hearts, buy stamina before a climbing-heavy section, then reverse after
Enduring Food Alternative — Temporary Stamina
Endura Carrot and Endura Shroom cook into meals that give Enduring Stamina — a yellow ring beyond your stamina wheel cap:
- 5x Endura Carrot → full Enduring wheel (doubles your effective stamina temporarily)
- Duration: ~10-15 minutes
This means stamina for specific challenges doesn't require permanent investment:
- Master Sword pull: Enduring food handles it
- Tall mountain climb: Enduring food handles it
Invest in hearts permanently; use Enduring food for stamina-intensive moments.
TL;DR — Best Strategy
- Early: Alternate hearts and stamina roughly evenly
- Mid: Push to 2 full stamina wheels, then switch to hearts
- Before Master Sword: Use 5x Endura Carrot instead of over-investing in stamina
- Late: All hearts — work toward 30+ containers
- Use Horned Statue if you realize your split is wrong (20R per swap)
