Hinox Guide — Sleeping Giants of Hyrule

Hinox are enormous cyclops giants found sleeping at specific locations across Hyrule. They wear a necklace of weapons — equipment you can steal. Their single large eye is the only effective weak point. This guide covers all Hinox types, the eye mechanic, and the necklace loot system.

Hinox Types

| Type | HP | Color | Strength | |------|-----|-------|---------| | Red Hinox | Low | Red/brown skin | Weakest — good for early game | | Blue Hinox | Medium | Blue skin | Moderate — mid game | | Black Hinox | High | Black skin | Hardest — late game tier |

All Hinox share the same fight mechanics — only HP and damage output differ between types.

The Eye Weak Point

The Hinox's eye is its only efficient attack target.

  • The eye glows red when the Hinox is awake and alert
  • Arrow to the eye: deals heavy damage and staggers the Hinox briefly
  • Melee on the eye (if you can reach it): even more effective but requires height
  • Body attacks: The body is resistant — you deal 50-75% reduced damage to anything except the eye

Reaching the eye for melee:

  1. The Hinox is enormous — its eye is at head height, well above ground level
  2. Jump + attack from elevated terrain, OR
  3. The Hinox grabs you → while being lifted, attack the eye at close range, OR
  4. Use Ascend through the Hinox's body (very advanced — requires being under it)

Arrow strategy (standard):

  • Fire arrows at the eye from distance
  • When staggered: sprint in for melee hits on the body (reduced damage, but free hits)
  • Fall back → wait for the Hinox to stop its recovery swing → arrow again

The Necklace System

Every Hinox wears a necklace of strung-together weapons. These are actual weapons you can take.

How to take the necklace weapons:

  1. Before the fight: Sneak up while the Hinox sleeps → Ultrahand the necklace → pull weapons off while it sleeps (no combat needed for the necklace)
  2. During the fight: Use Ultrahand to grab necklace weapons while it's attacking — risky but possible
  3. After the fight: The necklace stays on the Hinox's body — take weapons at leisure

Necklace weapon quality scales with Hinox type:

  • Red Hinox: Basic Hylian weapons, bokoblin clubs
  • Blue Hinox: Mid-tier weapons, soldier's equipment
  • Black Hinox: Royal weapons, knight's gear, occasionally rare items

Necklace farming: Black Hinox near settlements often carry Royal weapons that respawn every Blood Moon. A reliable Royal Claymore/Shield source.

Fight Strategy

Opening — Sneak and Arrow

  1. Hinox starts asleep — sneak within bow range without waking it
  2. Fire an arrow at its eye from stealth → big damage hit + instant wake
  3. Continue arrow volley from distance as it stands up

Wake-up window: The first 2-3 seconds after waking, the Hinox is slower — maximize damage.

Mid Fight — Eye Arrow Loop

  1. Hinox charges or swings → dodge to side
  2. It momentarily stops after a charge → arrow to the eye (it's stationary, clean shot)
  3. Stagger → close-range melee if you can reach the eye height
  4. Back up before the recovery swing
  5. Repeat

Hinox Grab — Don't Panic

The Hinox can grab Link and squeeze him:

  • Button-mash to escape (attack buttons)
  • Use this window: If the Hinox holds you at eye level → slash the eye at close range → massive damage
  • Escape quickly — being squeezed drains hearts rapidly

Black Hinox — Modifications

Black Hinox has ground-pound attacks:

  • When it raises its fist for a ground pound → sprint sideways out of the impact radius
  • The ground pound sends a shockwave in a line — the shockwave hitbox extends further than it looks
  • The ground pound stun gives an extra damage window

Common Hinox Locations

Hinox sleep at specific fixed points across Hyrule. Notable locations:

| Type | Region | Notes | |------|--------|-------| | Red Hinox | Faron | Near Lake Floria, sleeping on a hillside | | Blue Hinox | Necluda | East of Kakariko, forest area | | Blue Hinox | Tabantha | Near the canyon area | | Black Hinox | Akkala | Northeast Hyrule near ruins | | Black Hinox | Faron | Deep forest area | | Black Hinox | Gerudo | Desert edge ruins |

All respawn on Blood Moons. Their sleeping positions are fixed.

Special: Hinox vs Link Combat Tricks

Throw rocks: Any large rock Ultrahand-grabbed can be thrown at the Hinox face — deals damage and staggers without using weapon durability.

Shield surf past swings: Hinox arm swings are slow enough to shield surf dodge directly through them.

Tree stump platforms: In forested Hinox locations, standing on tree stumps gives you height to target the eye at closer range.

Loot

| Drop | Use | |------|-----| | Hinox Toenail | Armor upgrades | | Hinox Tooth | Armor upgrades | | Hinox Guts | Elixirs — high-value amplifier | | Necklace weapons | Direct use (varies by Hinox type) |

Hinox Guts are valuable elixir ingredients — combine with Tireless Frogs for durable Endura Elixirs.

Quick Tips

  • Take the necklace while it sleeps — Ultrahand the necklace from stealth before engaging. Free weapons without fighting for them. Always check the necklace first.
  • Eye is the only efficient target — don't waste weapon durability on the body. If you run out of arrows, get to the Hinox's head height through terrain or wait for a grab.
  • Black Hinox for Royal weapons — the best passive weapon farm in the game. Black Hinox near Akkala Citadel has Royal weapons on its necklace every Blood Moon.
  • Hinox grab = opportunity — don't just mash to escape. Take 2-3 hits on the eye while you're being held (you have time). The eye damage during a grab is the highest melee damage per engagement in a standard fight.
  • Arrow type doesn't matter much — any arrow type damages the eye effectively. Save specialty arrows (shock, fire) for enemies with specific vulnerabilities. Standard arrows are fine for Hinox.
