Lightning Temple Complete Walkthrough — Riju's Dungeon Guide
Lightning Temple Complete Walkthrough
The Lightning Temple is the Gerudo dungeon of Tears of the Kingdom, accessed through the Gerudo region after completing Riju's questline. The temple is a massive sandstorm-shrouded structure filled with sand, electricity hazards, and puzzles that require combining Riju's lightning ability with precise arrow shots.
Prerequisites
Before entering the Lightning Temple you need:
- Riju's Cloud ability (obtained mid-way through the Gerudo questline)
- Rubber Armor or Electro Elixirs — the temple contains electric hazards and Constructs that discharge lightning
- High-quality bow — Riju's lightning requires precise arrow shots; a Lynel bow or multi-shot bow makes this much faster
- Completion of "Riju of Gerudo Town" main quest — this quest leads you to the temple entrance
Recommended stats: 10+ hearts, at least 1.5 stamina wheels, a full arrow supply (60+).
Reaching the Lightning Temple
- Complete Riju's questline at Gerudo Town — you'll investigate the Gibdo invasion and follow clues to the Gerudo Desert
- Travel to the Statue of the Eighth Heroine area in the far southwest desert
- Use Riju's ability + arrows to destroy the sand-block obstructions around the temple entrance
- Enter the Lightning Temple (marked on map after questline progress)
Tip: The sandstorm in the Gerudo Desert damages visibility dramatically. Use the Gerudo map marker once revealed and fly straight to the entrance.
Riju's Ability — How It Works in the Temple
Riju's Lightning Cloud creates a charged sphere above Link. While it's active:
- Draw your bow (hold ZR) to enter slow motion
- Release an arrow into the lightning cloud's target zone
- Lightning strikes wherever the arrow hits
In the Lightning Temple, this is the primary tool for:
- Activating electric terminals (yellow lightning-bolt symbols)
- Destroying sand-block walls (shoot cloud through sand walls — lightning penetrates them)
- Stunning electric enemies
- Triggering switches across impassable gaps
Cooldown: Riju's ability resets every few seconds. Rapid sequential shots are possible if you time them correctly.
Floor 1 — Entry Hall
Orientation: The temple is built vertically with four wings connected by a central shaft. You need to activate terminals in all four wings.
Entrance Room
Upon entering, you face a massive sand-floored hall with electric Constructs patrolling. Use Riju's lightning to stun them, then finish them with melee.
Chest 1: In the right side of the entrance hall, behind a sand block wall. Use Riju's lightning to destroy the wall — contains 5 Arrows.
Central Shaft Discovery
Find the central shaft (a vertical column in the middle of the temple). You'll ascend this shaft multiple times. Use Ascend to move through the ceilings connecting floors.
Wing 1 — North Wing (Upper Left)
Puzzle: Sand Block Maze
The north wing is filled with sand block walls arranged in a maze. Navigate through using Ultrahand to move sand blocks and Riju's lightning to destroy them from a distance.
Key mechanic: Sand blocks can be moved with Ultrahand — pick them up and reposition to create paths. Riju's lightning destroys sand blocks without requiring physical contact.
Chest 2 (North Wing): Hidden behind three stacked sand blocks in the northwest corner. Move two, then shoot Riju's lightning through the gap to destroy the third. Contains Gerudo Scimitar.
Terminal 1 — North
Find the yellow lightning terminal at the back of the north wing. Shoot Riju's lightning at it to activate. The terminal glows blue when active.
Wing 2 — East Wing
Puzzle: Electric Floor Panels
The east wing has electric floor panels that discharge periodically. The pattern:
- Panels flash yellow = safe to cross
- Panels turn blue = 1-second warning
- Panels turn white = electric discharge (causes damage and knockback)
Navigation tip: Wear Rubber Armor or activate an Electro Elixir before entering. Alternatively, use Ascend through the ceiling at the entrance to bypass the floor panels entirely by reaching the upper platform.
Puzzle: Rotating Lightning Wheel
A large spinning wheel with lightning emitters is blocking the terminal. Stop it using Recall — reverse the wheel's rotation and hold it in the position where the gap aligns with the terminal. Shoot Riju's lightning through the gap while Recall holds the wheel still.
Chest 3 (East Wing): On a platform above the rotating wheel. Use the wheel's spokes as platforms (while Recalled) to climb up. Contains Gerudo Shield.
Terminal 2 — East
With the wheel stopped via Recall, shoot through the opening to hit the terminal.
Wing 3 — South Wing
Puzzle: Sand Quicksand Pit
The south wing has a large quicksand pit. Walking into it pulls Link down — use Ascend to escape if caught.
Navigation: Three stone platforms float above the quicksand. Use Ultrahand to pull them closer together and create a path across.
Chest 4 (South Wing): Submerged in the quicksand (reachable by gliding over, then using Ultrahand to pull it up). Contains Amber ×5.
Puzzle: Chain Lightning Relay
Three electric orbs need to be connected in sequence using Riju's lightning. Shoot the first, which activates the second's position, allowing the next shot to chain through. Complete the chain to activate a gate.
Terminal 3 — South
At the end of the south wing behind the chain lightning gate. Shoot directly once the gate opens.
Wing 4 — West Wing
Puzzle: Mirrored Sand Blocks
The west wing uses mirror-image sand block formations. You must solve them symmetrically — moving one block requires moving its mirror to maintain balance on pressure plates.
Tip: Look for the counterweight indicator (small arrow icons on the walls) to identify which blocks are paired.
Chest 5 (West Wing): On the ceiling alcove above the mirror puzzle. Use Ascend to reach the upper level, then navigate the alcove from above. Contains Gerudo Claymore (strong early weapon).
Terminal 4 — West
Standard terminal — shoot Riju's lightning at the symbol. This activates the final door to the boss chamber.
Boss Chamber — Reaching Queen Gibdo
With all four terminals active, the central shaft's top opens. Ascend through the shaft or use the elevator platform that activates. Follow the path to the Throne Room above.
Pre-boss chest: In the antechamber before the boss door. Contains Gibdo Bone (weapon material).
Boss: Queen Gibdo
Queen Gibdo is a giant moth creature — the Phantom Ganon version of the Gibdo that invaded Gerudo Town. She has two phases.
Phase 1 — Cocoon Phase
Queen Gibdo enters combat inside a protective cocoon of sand and Gloom.
Weak points: Four glowing egg-sacs on her wings. They are shielded until you use Riju's lightning.
Strategy:
- Wait for Queen Gibdo to hover above Link's position
- Activate Riju's Cloud and shoot arrows into the cloud to trigger lightning
- The lightning strips the shield from one or more egg-sacs
- Immediately shoot the exposed egg-sac with a normal arrow (or melee if she's low)
- Repeat — each lightning strike exposed 1-2 sacs; hitting all 4 ends Phase 1
Hazards to dodge:
- Sand pillar slam: She slams down on Link's position — roll sideways
- Wind gust: She flaps wings, sending Link sliding backward — counter with Tulin's gust if active
- Gibdo swarm summon: She spawns regular Gibdos from cocoon pods in the arena corners — destroy the pods with Riju's lightning before they hatch
Phase 1 tip: Position yourself near the arena center. Queen Gibdo always hovers directly above Link before her slam attack — this is your cue to activate Riju and fire.
Phase 2 — Free Form
Queen Gibdo sheds her cocoon and enters a faster aerial phase.
Changed attacks:
- Wind beam: A sustained beam of wind that pushes Link toward the arena edge
- Dive bomb: She dives at Link with talons — roll sideways or shield-parry
- Mass Gibdo spawn: More aggressive spawn rate from arena corners
Strategy:
- Continue using Riju's lightning on exposed weak points (now on her body)
- Shoot the four glowing nodes on her thorax and wings
- When all nodes are destroyed, she staggers — rush in for melee damage
- Repeat 3-4 cycles
Useful items:
- Thunderwing Butterfly meals: Cook 3× Thunderwing Butterfly for Electric Resistance Up — her wing slams deal electricity damage
- Mighty attack meals: Attack Up ×3 meals make the melee windows during stagger much more effective
- Multi-shot bows: A Savage Lynel Bow (3-shot) or Duplex Bow makes hitting Riju's window much faster
Defeating Queen Gibdo
Queen Gibdo's death releases the Phantom Ganon puppet controlling her. The real Queen Gibdo essence was corrupted — she crumbles as the Phantom leaves.
Rewards:
- Queen Gibdo's Wings (10 ×) — unique material for Gerudo armor upgrades
- Heart Container — permanent heart increase
- Riju's Vow Strengthened — Riju pledges her power to you formally, triggering sage power upgrade
