Like Like Guide — Shield-Eating Enemies, Combat & Drops
Like Like Guide — Shield-Eating Cave Enemies
Like Likes are round blob enemies found in caves and some surface areas. Their signature mechanic: they inhale Link's shield (or other items) if he stands too close. They're not the toughest enemies but require attention to prevent permanent equipment loss. This guide covers how to fight them safely and what their drops are worth.
How Like Likes Work
Detection: Like Likes have a short detection radius (~5 meters). They don't patrol — they wait until Link enters their zone.
Inhale attack:
- Like Like extends toward Link and begins a suction animation
- Suction grabs Link's equipped shield if he's too close
- Shield is swallowed → if Like Like is killed before it dies naturally, the shield is recovered
- If Like Like is killed quickly: shield drops on death
- If Like Like "digests" (takes ~10 seconds after swallowing): shield is permanently gone
Additional inhale targets:
- Sometimes pulls in nearby small objects
- Cannot grab Link's weapon or armor — only equipped shield
Shield Recovery
If your shield is swallowed:
- Kill the Like Like immediately — you have approximately 10 seconds
- Kill → Like Like drops your shield on death
- Pick up the shield before collecting other loot
Don't panic: The 10-second window is enough to kill a Like Like with 2–4 good hits.
If you can't kill it in time: Shield is lost. Use the next shield in your inventory.
Combat Strategy
Preventing Shield Loss
Distance rule: Stay at 6+ meters from a Like Like at all times.
Arrow combat:
- Draw bow → fire at Like Like from safe range
- 2–3 arrows kill basic Like Likes
- They move slowly toward you while being shot → maintain distance
Fire Arrow: Like Likes are weak to fire. Fire Arrow → large bonus damage → 1–2 shots kill basic variants.
Melee Without Losing Shield
If you must melee:
- Drop your shield before engaging (B button to unequip)
- Melee attack → Like Like can't grab a shield you're not holding
- Quick 2–3 hit combo → Like Like dies before it can react
- Re-equip shield after kill
Bomb Fuse
Any weapon with a Bomb Fuse (or nearby bomb) can one-shot a Like Like:
- The explosion deals massive damage to their low-durability HP
- Safe distance from explosion range
Like Like Types
Regular Like Like
HP: Low Locations: Most cave systems, some Depths areas
Behavior: Standard inhale, slow movement.
Large Like Like
HP: Moderate Locations: Mid-to-late game caves, Depths
Behavior: Larger suction radius — shield grab range is further (8–10 meters). More dangerous to approach.
Shock Like Like (Electric)
Locations: Electric caves, Thunderhead area
Behavior: Same inhale, but contact deals shock damage. Chain-shocks to nearby Link if metal equipped.
Counter: Rubber Armor for contact protection.
Drops
| Drop | Use | |------|-----| | Like Like Stone | Fuse material — adds defense bonus to armor? No — weapon fuse; minor attack bonus | | Chuchu Jelly (sometimes) | Random — if it swallowed a Chuchu Jelly before dying | | Swallowed item (on quick kill) | Recovered shield or object |
Like Like Stone: The most consistent drop. Not a high-value Fuse material (+5 attack) but available in abundance from cave farming.
Drop rate: Like Like Stone drops ~70% of kills. Not a targeted farm target for most players.
Best Locations
Necluda Caves
Necluda's cave systems (near Kakariko and east toward Hateno) have regular Like Likes:
- 1–3 per cave
- Low-tier variant (easiest to farm)
- Blood Moon reset
Faron Caves
Multiple Like Likes in Faron's wet caves:
- Mixed with Horriblins
- Good for clearing both enemy types in one cave loop
Depths Caves (Black/Large variants)
Larger Like Like variants in Depths caves:
- Higher HP
- Better Like Like Stone drop rate
- Combined with Horriblin and Poe farming
Quick Tips
- Arrow from 6+ meters — never melee a Like Like without dropping your shield first. Arrow combat from range eliminates all risk. Fire Arrows make it trivially fast.
- Unequip shield before melee — if you want to conserve arrows, drop your shield (equip the second shield from your inventory first, then drop-equip the shield you want to protect), melee, re-equip. Slightly awkward but protects your best shield.
- 10 seconds for recovery — the shield digestion timer is generous. As long as you kill the Like Like within 10 seconds of the swallow animation, you get the shield back. Don't waste time — attack immediately.
- Fire Arrows simplify everything — Like Likes are noticeably weak to fire. A single Fire Arrow to the face deals 3× normal arrow damage. Most like Likes die in 1–2 Fire Arrows from safe range. Keep 10+ fire arrows specifically for caves.
- Like Like Stone is okay mid-game — it's not a priority farm but don't ignore it. +5 attack Fuse is better than an empty socket on low-tier weapons you're using for mining or throwaway combat.
