Master Kohga Guide — All 4 Depths Boss Fights in TotK
Master Kohga Guide — All 4 Depths Boss Fights
Master Kohga is a recurring boss in Tears of the Kingdom, encountered four times across the Depths. Each fight introduces a new Ultrahand-based mechanic. Defeating all four Kohga encounters unlocks a powerful reward and advances the Yiga Clan storyline.
Who Is Master Kohga?
Master Kohga is the leader of the Yiga Clan — a group of Sheikah defectors who serve Ganondorf. In TotK, he has been banished to the Depths after the events of Breath of the Wild, where he spent his time building elaborate Zonai-powered traps. Each encounter is equal parts puzzle and boss fight.
Why fight Kohga:
- Each defeat grants a large Zonaite reward and rare materials
- Completing all four fights unlocks a unique Zonai Construct schematic
- Required for 100% Depths exploration and Yiga Clan quest completion
- Kohga's defeat locations mark important Depths waypoints
Fight 1 — Kohga of the Depths (Abandoned Kara Kara Bazaar)
Location: Directly beneath Kara Kara Bazaar, Central Gerudo Depths Coordinates (Depths): Approximately (-3200, -2100, -0500) How to reach: Drop into the Gerudo Depths chasm south of Kara Kara Bazaar on the surface. Activate the nearby Lightroot first for fast travel access.
Mechanics
Kohga rises on a hovering platform with a Zonai construct sphere. He tosses a metal sphere into the arena and attempts to smash Link with it.
The trick:
- Wait for Kohga to raise the metal sphere overhead.
- Grab the sphere with Ultrahand before he releases it.
- Throw the sphere directly at Kohga.
- Kohga falls to the platform — sprint in and land melee hits.
- Repeat 3 times.
Tips:
- The sphere is grabbed from range — you do not need to be underneath Kohga.
- If you miss the throw, the sphere resets and Kohga restarts the toss animation.
- This fight has the most generous timing of all four Kohga encounters.
Rewards
- 3× Large Zonaite
- 5× Zonaite
- 1× Zonai Charge
- Yiga Clan Footsoldier Notes (lore item)
Fight 2 — Kohga of the Depths II (Abandoned Lanayru Road)
Location: Beneath Lanayru Road — East Gate, East Depths Coordinates (Depths): Approximately (2400, -0800, -0480) How to reach: Drop through the Lanayru East Gate chasm, or travel from the Dragonhead Island Lightroot eastward.
Mechanics
The arena has an elevated platform with two metal spheres and a rolling mechanism. Kohga now uses two spheres simultaneously — one as a decoy and one as the real attack.
The trick:
- Kohga levitates and positions one sphere on each side.
- One sphere will be aligned with a launching ramp — Grab it with Ultrahand and launch it up the ramp to hit Kohga.
- Alternatively, grab both spheres and throw one directly at him.
- After the first hit, the second phase adds a spinning sphere barrier.
- Time the Ultrahand grab between rotations to pull a sphere free and throw it.
Tips:
- The ramp launching method is the intended solution but direct throws also work.
- The spinning phase happens faster in each subsequent cycle — grab quickly.
- Keep your distance during the spin phase — the orbiting spheres deal significant contact damage.
Rewards
- 5× Large Zonaite
- 3× Zonai Charge
- 1× Large Zonai Charge
Fight 3 — Kohga of the Depths III (Abandoned Eldin Canyon Outpost)
Location: Beneath Eldin Canyon Outpost, North Eldin Depths Coordinates (Depths): Approximately (1600, 2200, -0520) How to reach: Descend through the Eldin Canyon Outpost chasm. The Minetak Lightroot is close — activate it first.
Mechanics
The arena introduces a trampoline sphere. Kohga floats higher than previous fights — out of direct Ultrahand reach from the ground.
The trick:
- Kohga places a large bouncy sphere (trampoline material) in the arena.
- Grab the sphere with Ultrahand and position it directly under Kohga.
- Grab a standard metal sphere from the arena edge.
- Place the metal sphere on top of the trampoline sphere and wait — it bounces upward and hits Kohga.
- Alternatively, throw the metal sphere directly upward toward Kohga using Ultrahand.
Phase 2 — after first hit:
- Kohga creates TWO trampoline spheres and adds a rotating spike barrier below his platform.
- The intended solution: stack two metal spheres on two trampolines simultaneously.
- The efficient solution: Use Ultrahand to throw a metal sphere directly upward, bypassing the trampoline mechanic entirely.
Tips:
- Direct Ultrahand throws at Kohga always work as an alternative to the ramp/trampoline puzzles.
- The spike barrier is easy to dodge — it rotates slowly.
- If you run low on throwing opportunities, pick up a fallen sphere from the floor.
Rewards
- 5× Large Zonaite
- 5× Zonai Charge
- 1× Large Zonai Charge
- Kohga's Mask (cosmetic headgear — Yiga Clan design)
Fight 4 — Kohga of the Depths IV (Abandoned Hebra Snowfield Camp)
Location: Beneath Hebra Snowfield, West Depths Coordinates (Depths): Approximately (-3000, 2400, -0530) How to reach: Drop through the Hebra snowfield chasm. The Sifumim Lightroot is the nearest landmark — navigate west from the Depths Hyrule Ridge boundary.
Mechanics
The final Kohga fight is the most complex. The arena has multiple floating platforms, Zonai fans, and a large spinning sphere assembly. Kohga is fully armored.
The trick:
- Kohga has a Zonai-powered construct shell protecting him. The shell has three lock points.
- Each lock point is a glowing sphere embedded in a fan assembly floating nearby.
- Ultrahand-grab each fan assembly and throw it at the matching lock on Kohga's shell.
- After all three locks are broken, Kohga is exposed.
- Sprint to Kohga and deal melee damage.
Phase 2 (second and third hit cycles):
- The fan assemblies move faster and add electric barriers.
- One assembly now has a Shock Emitter attached — grab it from the back to avoid the shock arc.
- Throw the correct assemblies in the same order — mismatches stun Link instead of damaging Kohga.
Final Phase:
- Kohga enters a rage state. His platform lowers and he tries to ram Link repeatedly.
- Dodge sideways and throw any nearby loose sphere at his now-unprotected body.
- Three hits in this phase ends the fight.
Tips:
- Always grab fan assemblies from the side or back — the front emitters shock you.
- If you're having trouble targeting the correct lock point, aim at the glowing indicator on Kohga's shell, not the fan assembly itself.
- A full stamina bar is strongly recommended — the ramming phase requires multiple consecutive dodges.
- Bring 10+ Sundelion meals into this fight — the Depths Gloom floors will drain hearts during the extended combat.
Rewards
- 10× Large Zonaite
- 5× Large Zonai Charge
- 3× Construct Horn (Captain-grade)
- Kohga's Construct Schematic — unlocks an exclusive Autobuild pattern for a Yiga-style vehicle
- Yiga Clan Commander's Journal (final lore entry — completes the Yiga Clan questline)

General Kohga Combat Tips
Always use Ultrahand, not arrows. Every Kohga fight is built around Ultrahand — arrows deal no meaningful damage to him. Do not waste arrow stock trying to snipe him.
Grab the sphere, don't wait for the throw. In fights 1–3, grabbing the sphere before Kohga releases it saves the time of watching his windup animation. Proactive grabs cut fight time by 40%.
Melee window after each hit. After every successful sphere hit, Kohga drops to ground level for approximately 4–6 seconds. Sprint to him immediately and get 3–5 sword hits in. This is the only melee window in each cycle.
Bring a high-attack weapon. The melee windows are short. One Savage Lynel sword during a mount phase deals more damage than 10 seconds of basic hits. Maximize single-hit damage.
The fights do not reset after death. If you die mid-fight, Kohga stays at whatever HP he had when you died. Re-entering the arena after a Game Over continues from where you left off — Kohga is never fully healed between attempts.
Post-Kohga: Yiga Clan Remnants
Defeating all four Master Kohga encounters triggers the appearance of elite Yiga Blademaster squads across the overworld. These appear at previous Yiga Clan outpost locations and drop the highest-tier Yiga weapons. Additionally, the Yiga Clan hideout in Gerudo Desert is restocked with a final lore chest containing the complete history of the clan's defection.
