Octorok Guide — Hidden Weapon Repair & Farming

Octoroks are deceptively valuable enemies in TotK. Beyond their standard drops, Water Octoroks have a hidden weapon repair mechanic — they'll restore a damaged weapon to full durability if you let them eat it. This guide covers all Octorok types, the repair mechanic, and where to farm their drops.

Octorok Types

Water Octorok

Locations: Lakes, rivers, ponds across Hyrule (Lake Hylia, Lanayru Wetlands, Necluda rivers)

Behavior:

  • Sits on water surface or submerged
  • Inhales deeply → sucks up a nearby rock or object → spits it at Link
  • If no rock available → spits slime (weak attack)

Combat:

  • Arrow to open mouth (mid-inhale): Best method. Stagger immediately.
  • Parry the rock spit: Deflects back at Octorok → high damage, often one-shot

Drops: Water Octorok Eye, Tentacle, Balloon

Rock Octorok

Locations: Eldin volcanic areas, Death Mountain approach

Behavior:

  • Burrows partially underground
  • Pops out → spits rock
  • Returns underground between attacks

Combat:

  • Wait for pop-out → arrow to face
  • Or: stand near the ground hole → Bomb when it opens
  • Cannot be hit while underground

Note: Rock Octoroks have the weapon repair mechanic as well. Toss a damaged weapon when they inhale → they restore it.

Drops: Rock Octorok Eye, Tentacle, Rock Octorok Balloon

Sky Octorok

Locations: Floating in the air above ore deposits, certain sky islands

Behavior:

  • Hovering enemy
  • Inhales → draws nearby objects or projectiles into it
  • Spits them back

Combat:

  • Fast-moving → difficult to hit with regular arrows
  • Aerocuda Eyeball arrow: Auto-aims → reliable hit
  • Arrow mid-spit (when mouth opens): stagger

Drops: Sky Octorok Eye (auto-aim fuse, similar to Aerocuda Eyeball), Tentacle

Forest Octorok

Locations: Woodlands area, Korok Forest adjacent regions

Behavior:

  • Disguised as a flower or plant
  • Attacks when Link gets close
  • Spits projectiles rapidly

Combat:

  • Arrow from range before approaching
  • Can't be approached stealthily (triggers at ~5 meters)

Drops: Forest Octorok Eye, Tentacle, Balloon

The Weapon Repair Mechanic

How it works:

  1. Have a weapon at very low durability (nearing the breaking-flash state)
  2. Approach a Water or Rock Octorok that is in its inhale phase
  3. Drop the damaged weapon near the Octorok
  4. The Octorok inhales the weapon → holds it momentarily
  5. Kill the Octorok during this moment → it drops the weapon
  6. The dropped weapon is fully repaired + all Fuse materials removed

Important notes:

  • The weapon must be damaged — a fresh weapon may not be repaired
  • The Fuse material is removed in the process (the weapon returns to its base state)
  • Each Octorok can only perform this once before needing to respawn (Blood Moon)
  • Best use: Restore a high-quality base weapon (Royal Claymore, Royal Guard Sword) that has accumulated damage — then re-fuse it with better materials

What gets removed: The repair strips ALL Fuse attachments. If you had a Lynel Blade fused to a Royal Sword, the Octorok repair removes the Lynel Blade. Plan accordingly.

Octorok Eyeball — Fuse Value

Octorok Eye (any type): Fuse to an arrow → slight tracking behavior (less reliable than Keese Eyeball but functional)

Sky Octorok Eye specifically: More reliable tracking than regular Octorok Eye — closer to Aerocuda Eyeball behavior

Best use for Octorok Eye: Secondary auto-aim supply when Keese/Aerocuda Eyeballs are depleted. Not a priority fuse but useful backup.

Farming Locations

Water Octorok — Lake Hylia

Multiple Water Octoroks in Lake Hylia:

  • West shore shallows (3–4 Octoroks)
  • Central lake islands (2–3 more)
  • Blood Moon reset → repeat

Repair loop: Kill all Octoroks → Blood Moon → return with next batch of damaged weapons → repair → re-fuse.

Rock Octorok — Eldin Canyon

Death Mountain approach has multiple Rock Octoroks:

  • Along the main canyon road
  • Near the volcanic rock outcroppings
  • Flamebreaker Armor required

Eldin Rock Octorok farm:

  • Each Rock Octorok = one weapon repair per Blood Moon
  • 4–6 Rock Octoroks on the canyon approach → repair 4–6 weapons per Blood Moon

Sky Octorok — Various Sky Islands

Sky Octoroks appear above specific ore deposits:

  • Akkala sky island cluster (2–3 Sky Octoroks)
  • Lanayru sky region
  • Thunderhead Isles area

Octorok Balloon — Fuse Value

Octorok Balloon: Fuse to any object → that object floats

Uses:

  • Fuse Balloon to a heavy object → it lifts up slightly (physics puzzle solution)
  • Fuse to a chest to make it float to the surface
  • Fuse to weapons: Balloon makes the weapon fly erratically (not recommended for combat — novelty only)

Best practical use: Balloon as a physics puzzle solution for lifting objects in shrines. Stock 5–10 for shrine puzzle use.

Quick Tips

  • Water Octorok repair is mandatory knowledge — the weapon repair mechanic is one of TotK's best-kept secrets. Every high-quality weapon that breaks can be restored this way. Always have a list of Water Octorok locations you know.
  • Plan the repair: no Fuse on the base weapon — if you want to restore a weapon AND keep it refuseable, remove the Fuse first (Pelison in Tarrey Town) before offering it to the Octorok. This gives you a clean base weapon at full durability + your Fuse material back.
  • Parrying the rock spit is the best kill method — Water Octoroks spit rocks that can be parried. Deflect back → Octorok is stunned → finish with melee. Faster than arrow combat and no ammo cost.
  • Sky Octorok Eye = secondary auto-aim supply — stock Sky Octorok Eyes alongside Keese and Aerocuda Eyeballs. They're not as reliable but are worth picking up during sky island exploration.
  • Octorok Balloon = shrine toolkit — many shrines have puzzles where you need to lift an object. Octorok Balloon fused to that object solves the puzzle instantly. Always carry 3–5 balloons.
