Gasas Shrine — Shadows and Light

Location: The Depths Ability Required: Combat, light management Difficulty: Medium — shadow enemy combat in darkness with light as protection

Overview

Gasas Shrine is a combat trial in the Depths where darkness is not just atmospheric — it's mechanically dangerous. Shadow enemies in the arena deal extra damage in total darkness, but light sources both weaken them and protect Link. Managing your light supply while fighting is the core challenge.

Preparation

  • Bring Brightbloom Seeds (at least 6) or arrows with Brightbloom fused
  • Fire weapons or fire arrows extend light duration
  • Gloom-resistant food or extra heart containers recommended
  • Takes 8–12 minutes

Walkthrough

Step 1: Arena Entry — Establish Light

  1. The arena is a circular chamber, almost completely dark when you enter. Two Shadow Constructs begin patrolling the perimeter — you can hear them but barely see them.
  2. Before engaging: Throw 2–3 Brightbloom Seeds toward the center of the arena. This creates lit zones and reveals the enemy positions.
  3. Note the wall brackets around the arena — 4 unlit torches are mounted on them. These are your primary light strategy.

Step 2: Light the Torches

  1. You have a fire weapon or fire arrow from the starting cache (or bring your own).
  2. Sprint around the arena perimeter and ignite all 4 wall torches with your fire weapon/arrow. This takes about 20 seconds.
  3. With all 4 torches lit, the arena center is fully illuminated. Shadow Constructs in lit areas deal half damage and take 50% more damage from your attacks.

Step 3: Engage

  1. With the arena lit, fight both Shadow Constructs directly. Standard combat — they use slash attacks but no ranged weapons.
  2. The Constructs will try to retreat to the arena edges (darker zones). Chase them back into the lit center — do not fight them in the shadows.
  3. Both Constructs down: door to altar opens.

Tips

  • Speed of torch lighting: The Constructs will attack you while you light torches. Sprint the circuit without stopping — take the hits rather than pausing. It's faster to light all 4 quickly than to fight in the dark.
  • Brightbloom Seeds vs. torches: Seeds provide temporary light (30s each); torches are permanent for the fight. Seeds are best for the first few seconds to reveal enemy positions; torches are your sustained strategy.
  • Shadow retreat: If a Construct runs to the dark edge, don't follow. Use a Brightbloom throw to push light into its corner, forcing it back toward center.
  • Gloom floor patches: Small gloom patches exist near the arena walls. Stick to the center once the torches are lit.
  • Chest: In an alcove off the east wall, only visible once the arena torches are lit. The alcove entrance is behind one of the torch brackets.
