Kamizun Shrine
Kamizun Shrine — Proving Grounds: Guard Up
Location: Central Hyrule, northwest Hyrule Field Coordinates: (-0812, 0894, 0016) Type: Combat Shrine Difficulty: Easy
Overview
Kamizun Shrine is a shield and parry tutorial combat shrine — designed to teach players the defensive combat mechanics that make TotK's combat system rewarding at higher difficulty levels. The Constructs inside are specifically calibrated to reward parrying over dodging: their attacks are telegraphed with clear visual indicators, and the timing windows are generous. Players who complete Kamizun come away with the parry timing muscle memory needed for much harder combat encounters in Hyrule Castle and the Coliseum. A straightforward but mechanically instructive shrine.
Preparation
- A shield — the core mechanic requires one; borrow one from a nearby enemy if needed
- A mid-tier weapon (15+ attack) for follow-up strikes after successful parries
- No temperature gear needed — Central Hyrule is temperate
- Full hearts recommended — the Constructs here are designed for learning, not punishment, but take occasional hits to learn
- No specialist arrows or Fuse materials needed
Walkthrough
Room 1: Basic Parry — Sword Construct
The first Construct uses a single overhead slash — one of the game's most telegraphed attacks. The orange flash before the attack is the parry window. Raise the shield (ZL) and press A during the flash. Successful parry: the attack is deflected, the Construct staggers 1.5 seconds. Land 2-3 strikes during the stagger. Miss the parry: the attack hits normally but deals light damage at this tier. Practice the timing until 2 parries are landed successfully.
Room 2: Projectile Parry — Ranged Construct
The second room introduces projectile parrying — deflecting arrows back at the shooter. The Ranged Construct fires slow arrows with a visible trail. Face the Construct, raise shield (ZL), and press A when the arrow is approximately 1 meter away. A successful parry deflects the arrow back at the Construct, dealing significant damage. Three parried arrows typically defeat the Construct without using a melee weapon.
Room 3: Heavy Attack Parry — Elite Construct
The Elite Construct charges a glowing heavy attack — the charge takes 2 seconds and the orange flash is larger than normal attacks. The parry window is slightly longer for heavy attacks (0.5 seconds vs 0.3 seconds for light attacks). Parrying a charged heavy attack staggers the Elite for 2.5 seconds — a long window for follow-up damage. The Elite's charged attacks appear frequently, providing multiple practice opportunities.
Room 4: Boss Construct — Combined Skills
The final Construct cycles through light attacks, arrows, and a charged heavy — requiring all three parry types from earlier rooms in sequence. Start defensive: let the Construct telegraph its attack type before committing to a parry response. Defeat it using the full defensive toolkit: light attack parry → stagger combo; arrow parry → deflect damage; heavy parry → long stagger combo.
Step 5: Altar
Defeat the Boss Construct to open the final gate. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest nearby contains a Hylian Shield (chance on first run) or Royal Shield — both excellent defensive items.
Tips
- The parry flash timing is: see the orange flash → immediately press A (don't hold, just press)
- Too early: the shield raises before the impact window, no parry registered
- Too late: the attack lands normally; you still blocked but no stagger
- Projectile parry is more forgiving on timing than melee parry — the arrow travels slowly enough to parry at 1-2 meters distance
- Heavy attack parry window is actually the easiest timing-wise due to the longer flash duration — don't overthink it
