Kyokugon Shrine
Kyokugon Shrine — A Matching Puzzle
Location: Akkala region, northern Akkala near the Akkala Sea coast Coordinates: (4186, 2968, 0118) Type: Puzzle Shrine — Spatial Shape Fitting Difficulty: Medium
Overview
Kyokugon Shrine presents a three-dimensional shape-fitting puzzle — rooms contain stone blocks of irregular profiles that must be positioned to fit through shaped openings in walls and gates. The challenge escalates from simple flat shapes to complex multi-axis profiles requiring rotation on two axes simultaneously. Ultrahand's rotation controls are the core mechanic: players must visualize how a 3D object's cross-section changes with each axis of rotation and find the orientation that clears the opening. Kyokugon is an excellent Ultrahand precision trainer and directly prepares players for Zonai construction challenges in the overworld.
Preparation
- Ultrahand — the only required ability; proficiency with rotation (right stick) is critical
- No combat gear, weapons, or elemental items needed
- No temperature gear — Akkala coastal region is temperate
- Patience for spatial reasoning: observe blocks from multiple angles before rotating
Walkthrough
Step 1: Flat Profile Match
The first room has a rectangular stone block and a wall with a cross-shaped opening. The block in its default orientation is too wide. Rotate the block 90 degrees on its horizontal axis with Ultrahand — the flat edge now faces forward, matching the cross opening's horizontal arm. Push it through.
Step 2: L-Shaped Block
The second room introduces an L-shaped block and a matching L-shaped gate opening. The block is presented face-up but the opening is on a vertical wall. Rotate the block 90 degrees on the lateral axis so the L-shape is vertical, then align the orientation (long arm up vs. short arm up) to match the gate's exact L-profile. Push through. Two distinct rotation operations required.
Step 3: T-Shape with Rotation Lock
The third room has a T-shaped block and a T-opening, but the T-opening is rotated 45 degrees — a diagonal T. Rotate the block both laterally AND axially to match the diagonal orientation. The block must be held at a maintained diagonal — Ultrahand holds rotation in place as long as the button is held, but releasing re-centers the camera. Lock the angle visually against the wall before pushing.
Step 4: Complex Multi-Shape
The final room has a plus-sign block (+ shaped) that must pass through an offset opening — the plus-sign opening is shifted to one corner of the wall, not centered. This requires both correct rotation AND precise lateral positioning of the block's center before pushing. Align center-to-center first, then fine-position to match the off-center opening.
Step 5: Altar
Through the final gate is Rauru's altar. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest contains a Strong Zonaite Shield — a sturdy shield useful for Akkala combat encounters.
Tips
- Hold Ultrahand and use the right stick to rotate — each stick movement rotates in that axis
- Push blocks slowly: if they catch on the opening edge, pull back slightly and re-align rather than forcing
- Use the opening's silhouette as a template — get the block in front of the opening and compare shapes before committing to a push
- T-shape at 45 degrees: rotate to roughly 45 degrees visually; the opening will catch the block when alignment is correct
- The shape-fitting logic applies to Zonai device attachment puzzles throughout the overworld — Kyokugon builds transferable skills
