Larutam Shrine — Proving Grounds: Ascend and Climb

Location: Faron region, Faron Woods Coordinates: (1612, -2134, 0098) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Larutam Shrine is set in the lush Faron Woods — the dense jungle territory south of Hyrule Field where giant trees, thick undergrowth, and tropical fauna define the landscape. The shrine's puzzles use a combination of climbing mechanics, vine traversal, and Ascend to navigate its multi-level interior. The jungle aesthetic carries into the shrine's design: wood-and-stone construction, organic curves, and the sound of water nearby. This shrine rewards players who are comfortable with movement diversity rather than pure Ultrahand or combat skill.

Preparation

  • Climbing Gear (optional but helps) — the shrine has significant vertical climbing
  • Stamina management — some climbing sequences require full or near-full stamina wheels
  • Ascend ability required — unlocked on Great Sky Island
  • Energizing Elixirs for stamina restoration during long climbs
  • No temperature gear needed — Faron region is warm; no cold or heat hazards

Walkthrough

Step 1: Vine Ascent

The first chamber has a wall covered in climbable vines — the only path upward. Unlike stone walls, vines allow standard climbing speed but drain stamina at the same rate. Climb the vine wall to the first platform. If stamina is limited, look for ledges or protrusions to rest on mid-climb before resuming. The vine wall connects to a stone ledge 8 meters up.

Step 2: Ascend Through Wood

The second section has a thick wooden platform overhead — the entry to the upper level. Unlike stone, wood is always compatible with Ascend. Walk under the wooden platform's center and Ascend through it. This demonstrates wood as a reliable Ascend surface throughout the game. A chest on this level contains a Mighty Bananas cooking ingredient — worth grabbing.

Step 3: Climbing With Gaps

The third room has a tall multi-section wall with gaps between sections — Link must transfer between vine patches across stone surfaces. The technique: climb the first vine section, traverse onto the stone at the gap (standard climbing), cross the stone gap quickly before stamina depletes, and grab the next vine section. The stone sections drain stamina faster than vines — pace yourself.

Step 4: Upper Canopy Platform

The final section reaches an upper canopy level via Ascend through a bamboo floor. The bamboo is thin and always compatible. After ascending, a horizontal wood beam extends to the altar platform — a balance beam crossing. Walk across carefully (don't sprint — it causes stumbling on narrow beams) to the altar.

Step 5: Altar

The altar is on the canopy platform overlooking the shrine's interior. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest at the platform edge contains Endura Carrot — a stamina-extending food item perfect for climbing-heavy exploration.

Tips

  • Vine walls always allow climbing but still drain stamina — plan rest stops at ledges and protrusions
  • Wood surfaces (planks, bamboo, doors) are always Ascend-compatible — more reliable than assessing stone thickness
  • Stone gaps during vine-to-vine transfers in Step 3: move quickly; stone drains stamina 30% faster than vines
  • Balance beams require walking speed — don't sprint or Link loses balance and falls
  • Faron Woods exterior: the jungle is warm but has Bokoblins in tree platforms — bring combat gear for the approach
