Makurukara Shrine
Makurukara Shrine — A Lynel's Power
Location: Faron Region, south Hyrule coast Type: Combat Shrine — Lynel Boss Trial Difficulty: ★★★★★ (5/5) — Extreme Coordinates: 1386, -3748, 0238 Required Ability: Advanced combat (Lynel mount, slow-motion bow, Flurry Rush) Reward: Light of Blessing
Overview
Makurukara Shrine is one of TotK's hardest shrines — a full Lynel fight in an enclosed arena. Lynels are the game's strongest non-boss enemies: fast, high-damage, and capable of one-shotting unprepared players. The shrine pits you against a Blue-Maned Lynel (mid-tier) in a confined space that eliminates the open-world tactic of extended kiting. Preparation quality and Lynel-specific mechanics knowledge are the difference between a 5-minute clear and a frustrating loss loop.
Preparation — DO NOT SKIP
| Item | Quantity | Priority | |------|----------|---------| | Highest attack weapon | 3–4 (50+ attack) | CRITICAL — Lynel fights are weapon-intensive | | Attack-boosting meals (Mighty food) | 5 | Pop one at fight start, one at 50% HP | | Defense meals or armor (30+ def) | 4 | Buffer against Lynel's massive per-hit damage | | Fairies (auto-revive) | 2–3 | Safety net; equip them in bottles before entry | | Multi-shot bow | 1 | Falcon Bow or better; multi-shot multiplies stagger efficiency | | Bomb Arrows | 10+ | Maximum damage during stagger windows |
Armor recommendation: Ancient Hero's Aspect (secret rare), or any armor set at ★★★ upgrade level (30+ defense). Unupgraded armor against a Lynel is dangerous.
Lynel Overview — Blue-Maned Lynel
| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | ~1,200 | | Primary attacks | Multi-arrow bow volley, fire breath, charge rush, downward slam | | Stagger condition | Arrow to face staggers briefly | | Mount condition | After stagger: sprint to Lynel and mount (Y prompt) | | Mounted hits | 8–10 unblockable swings before thrown off |
Walkthrough
Phase 1: Opening — Establish Slow-Motion Window
The Lynel charges or fires arrows immediately on entry. Do not freeze.
Slow-motion bow opening:
- Jump forward (off any surface, including flat arena floor — the jump gives airtime)
- While airborne, draw your bow (ZR) — TotK's slow-motion aim activates in midair
- Aim at the Lynel's face (glowing weak point at the head)
- Fire — face shot staggers the Lynel for 2–3 seconds
- Land; sprint immediately toward the staggered Lynel
- The Y button prompt appears when close enough: mount the Lynel
Phase 2: Mounted Burst — Primary Damage Window
Mounting the Lynel is the shrine's highest-value damage window:
- Once mounted (riding the Lynel's back), swing your weapon repeatedly — each swing deals full weapon damage with no block or dodge required
- You can switch weapons mid-mount if one breaks — open inventory while mounted
- 8–10 hits are possible per mount; at 50+ attack, this deals 400–600+ damage per mount
- The Lynel throws you off after mounting — land on your feet (impact roll) and re-establish positioning
- Heal if needed between mounts; then repeat the slow-motion bow → stagger → mount cycle
Phase 3: Managing Lynel Attacks (Between Mounts)
Arrow volley: Fires 3–5 arrows at once in a spread. Block with shield (hold ZL) — the shield covers most of the spread. Do not dodge backward; the spread tracks.
Fire breath: Short-to-medium range. The Lynel lowers its head and sweeps fire left-to-right. Run perpendicular to the sweep direction (away from where the fire is sweeping) to avoid it entirely.
Charge rush: High speed full-body charge. Dodge sideways at the last moment (0.3s before contact) — Flurry Rush triggers. 6–8 melee hits during the Rush. This is a legitimate alternative to the slow-motion bow for stagger cycling.
Downward slam: Jumps and slams down. Jump (B button) over the slam impact zone — same mechanic as the Construct floor slam. Alternatively, sprint away from the Lynel's landing position.
Phase 4: Mid-Fight Resource Management
Lynels are weapon-intensive. Manage durability proactively:
- Swap weapons at 1 durability remaining — don't let weapons break mid-combo (they disappear, leaving Link with 0 DPS mid-attack)
- Use Bomb Arrows during mount phase — Bomb Arrows deal massive damage and are safe to use while mounted (no blast radius risk to Link)
- Pop Attack-Up meal at 50% Lynel HP — the meal's effect turns each mounted hit from good to lethal
Chest — Post-Combat
After the Lynel is defeated:
- Check the arena rear wall — a chest materializes
- Contains elite loot: Savage Lynel Crusher, Savage Lynel Bow, or Lynel Saber Horn (fuse material for highest-tier weapons)
- Collect before exiting — Lynel horn drops are also on the floor
Altar
Walk to Rauru's statue and collect your Light of Blessing.
Chest Summary
| Chest | Location | Contents | |-------|----------|----------| | Arena rear wall | Materializes post-combat | Savage Lynel Crusher or Lynel Saber Horn |
Tips & Strategy
- Mount is the win condition: The Lynel fight becomes dramatically easier the moment you can reliably mount. Every mount is 8–10 free hits. The entire fight is about cycling slow-motion bow → stagger → mount → repeat.
- Multi-shot bow advantage: Multi-shot bows (3-shot, 5-shot) triple or quintuple the stagger frequency — one slow-mo shot fires 3 arrows simultaneously, each capable of hitting the face weak point. Stagger rate triples.
- Fairies save runs: The Faron region has Great Fairy Fountains nearby. Upgrade fairies to auto-revive at 0 HP — this turns a potential shrine death into a second chance. Mandatory for first-time Lynel fights.
- Arena walls are dangerous: The enclosed arena means you can't run indefinitely. Stay toward the arena center; don't let the Lynel push you against a wall (its attacks become harder to dodge near walls due to restricted lateral movement).
- Attack-up food stacks: Two Mighty Meal uses (one at start, one at 50%) maintain the attack bonus throughout the fight (4+ minutes). The bonus applies to mounted hits, making each mount swing significantly more lethal.
- Lynel fight loop mastery: This fight's loop (jump → slow-mo bow → face shot → sprint → mount → 10 hits → thrown off → jump again) is the same loop used in all Lynel fights throughout TotK. Clearing Makurukara Shrine means you can farm Lynels in the open world efficiently.
Required Abilities
- Slow-motion bow — draw bow mid-jump for airborne slow-motion; face-shot the Lynel
- Mount mechanic — triggered after stagger; Y button prompt at close range; most valuable damage window
