Mayachideg Shrine
Mayachideg Shrine — Waterwheel Power
Location: Central Hyrule, south of Hyrule Castle Ability Required: Ultrahand Difficulty: Medium — water wheel and hydro-power puzzle
Overview
Mayachideg Shrine uses waterwheel mechanics — rotating waterwheels that generate rotational power to drive connected mechanisms. You'll position waterwheels in water flows to power lifts, gates, and bridges across the shrine's rooms.
Preparation
- No combat
- No special gear
- Takes 8–10 minutes
Walkthrough
Room 1 — Basic Waterwheel
- A water channel runs through the room. A waterwheel sits beside it (not in the water).
- Use Ultrahand to place the waterwheel in the channel — the wheel must be positioned so the paddle panels dip into the flowing water.
- The current spins the wheel, which turns the connected shaft and opens the gate.
Room 2 — Correct Direction
- The second room's mechanism requires the waterwheel to spin clockwise (the mechanism is geared for clockwise). But the water flows left-to-right, which spins the wheel counter-clockwise.
- Flip the waterwheel 180 degrees (rotate it around its vertical axis) before placing it in the stream.
- The flipped wheel now spins clockwise in the left-to-right flow, powering the mechanism correctly.
Room 3 — Double Wheel
- A large mechanism requires more power than one wheel provides — it needs two waterwheels.
- Both wheels are available in the room. Connect them in tandem: place Wheel 1 in the first channel, connect Wheel 2 to the same shaft system in the second parallel channel.
- Both wheels spinning simultaneously provides enough power to run the final lift to the altar.

Tips
- Paddle depth: The waterwheel's paddles need to partially submerge in the water — not the whole wheel, just the bottom paddles. If the wheel is too high, it doesn't catch the current.
- Direction test: If the mechanism doesn't activate after placing the wheel, it's likely spinning the wrong direction. Rotate the wheel 180 degrees and try again.
- Room 3 parallel channels: The two channels in Room 3 run side by side. Each wheel goes in one channel. They don't need to be connected to each other — they connect independently to the shared shaft.
- Waterwheel stability: Once placed in a flowing channel, the waterwheel stays in position without needing Ultrahand support. The current pressure holds it against the shaft mounting.
- Alternative power: If you have a Fan Zonai device, fans can substitute for waterwheels by directing air at the wheel's paddles. Less efficient but works in a pinch.
