Mayanas Shrine
Mayanas Shrine — A Light for Balancing
Location: Gerudo Desert, western region south of Gerudo Town Coordinates: (-4176, -3180, 0029) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium
Overview
Mayanas Shrine is a counterweight and balance puzzle — Link must use Ultrahand to place objects of varying weight on balance scales to tip them to the correct side and unlock gates. The shrine rewards players who develop an intuitive sense of object mass from Ultrahand interaction: heavier objects exert more force, and the balance angle telegraphs which side needs more weight. Unlike most Gerudo shrines that lean toward heat or spatial challenges, Mayanas is a pure physics puzzle that tests the player's ability to compare and manipulate mass systematically. It is one of the most elegantly designed shrines in the Gerudo region.
Preparation
- Calm, methodical approach — this shrine rewards observation over speed
- No weapons or armor required inside the shrine itself
- Ultrahand control with an understanding of how objects feel different weights in the grip
- Desert Voe Set for the exterior desert approach before entering
- A cooked meal beforehand — no hazards inside, but the desert approach warrants preparation
Walkthrough
Step 1: Basic Tipping
The first room has a simple balance scale with one side loaded with a stone block and the other side empty. The gate opens when the empty side is lower. Place any available object (a wooden crate in the corner) on the empty side — the scale tips, opening the first gate. This room establishes the mechanic: heavier side goes down, lighter side goes up.
Step 2: Equal Balance Challenge
The second room requires the scale to be perfectly level — neither side lower than the other. Two objects are available: a large stone block and a small metal sphere. Neither alone balances the large stone block on the opposite side. Stack the sphere on the platform with Ultrahand, then add the wooden crate from the corner — the combined weight matches the stone block within the scale's tolerance. When balanced, a green light activates and the gate opens. This is the most precise room in the shrine.
Step 3: Overweight and Counterbalance
The third room presents an overloaded scale — the left side is so heavy it's pinned to the floor. The gate opens when the right side is lower. Rather than adding weight to the right, remove weight from the left: use Ultrahand to lift the top object off the left pile, lightening it enough for the scale to tip toward the right. The gate opens when the right side dips below level.
Step 4: Moving Scale Platform
The final room has a scale whose platform moves: it swings slowly like a pendulum. Objects placed on it shift the center of gravity and affect the swing. The gate requires the right platform to dip and hold low for 3 seconds. Place the heaviest available object (a large stone cube) on the right side during the swing's neutral point — it arrests the swing and pins the right side down. Hold it with Ultrahand for 3 seconds to let the gate mechanism register fully.
Step 5: Altar
The altar is beyond the final gate. Collect your Light of Blessing. A chest near the altar contains a Mighty Construct Bow — strong ranged equipment for the wider Gerudo region.
Tips
- Objects feel different weights in Ultrahand — heavier objects resist fast movement and have more inertia when placed
- In Step 2, the tolerance for "level" is approximately 5 degrees — slight imprecision is acceptable
- Removing weight is often the solution rather than adding more — Step 3 is the prime example
- The swinging platform in Step 4 has a neutral point at the top of each arc — that's the best placement moment
- All objects in the shrine are reusable across rooms — carry key objects forward if the next room seems to need them
